If Sonny Gray is your long term centerpiece, you’re in F’ing trouble.

They gave up almost nothing, and essentially signed him to a free agent deal — about $40 million over 4 years.

The good:
* unless he’s a complete bust, you should be able to unload that
* can be very good when healthy
* much better away from Yankee Stadium

The bad:
* the Reds are taking a play out of the Mets annual playbook. Load up on high profile older names and praying to recapture former glory. Never really works out
* we ALWAYS lose when trading with NYY

I like the deal. I agree that the contract is good and they can unload it. I just wonder if the Reds are making all these moves just to wind up 2nd or 3rd in the Central and comfortably out of the playoffs. I'm not sure why they thought they were ready to call the rebuild complete and push their chips in now.

Glad Kansas pulled it out at home (Shocking.) Wouldn't have liked them coming into Rupp off a loss.

-- Lots of "what-ifs" with everything the Reds have done. To their credit, they're trying to be competitive when no team wants to really spend this off-season. In fact, a whole lot of teams are tanking. 1 month to pitchers and catchers reporting, and none of the big free agents (Harper, Machado, Keuchel) have signed.

-- I distinctly remember a whole lot of hate for JJ Redick for no apparent reason other than being too GD good a shooter for Duke and Luke Kennard as well for picking Duke over UK after worshiping UK his whole life.

-- Just scored 2 nice tickets to the UT game in 3 weeks. Hoping they stay right where they are at until then. Win at Vandy, aTm, and SC plus hold serve at home, and that game will be bigger than Kansas.

Shorts:

- Axel seems to be a trendy name for kids these days so I suppose you know the name of the kid who’s going to be selling your kid weed in 18 years.

- Big game tonight. No let down, boys.

- Disagree with Bristol- I wanted Kansas reeling with no confidence coming into a bumping Rupp. Oh well.

- Umm, @GrandePdre I guess you forget Redick’s poetry. Almost as bad as Rivers’ rapping. F’m all.

- This time last year, I was painting and remodeling a house every night.

My favorite thing the come out of the CovCath drama is this:

I honestly hope people on the far left start thinking there is some rampant conspiracy of white supremacy in basketball.

Anyone subscribe to Hoops Insight newsletter? Basically, its some dude who analyzes the Cats and then send out a newsletter. Good stuff. www.hoopsinsight.com

His takes:

- This is Cal’s best shooting team with a 54% eFG%.

- We’re great in transition, namely Hagans and Herro (best finisher on the team).

- Johnson and Quickley are incredibly efficient in the halfcourt.

- The weaknesses:

Turnovers (improving)
Three-point shooting- fourth worst under Cal (I really think this will get better)

- Overall, we’re on our way to becoming an elite offensive team.

*The Netflix doc on Fyre Fest wasnt as good as the HULU one, HOWEVER- they did include one extra little caveat... apparently Billy McFarland asked one of the event producers if he would blow another guy so they could get some of their stuff through customs without paying the fees.

Didnt ultimately happen although the guy was apparently considering it.

*The fact that Tucker wont actually backtrack on his comments about the DC ordeal is even worse than his original comment. Thats what happens when you blindly hope for these type of altercations so you can openly mock people with different political beliefs.

*Obviously I had it wrong with the early assessment of some of the individual players on the basketball team. I thought Johnson and Washington were going to be the only go-to type guys, but everyone seems to be settling into a role they are comfortable with. Still a long way to go but its nice to finally look at the schedule and be a little more optimistic.

*The South End twitter hot spots was a weird trip down memory lane. Thankfully some of those places are closed up now. A bit shocked there was no mention of Po' Folks or Bonnie and Clydes.

*Getting close to having the rental house finally fixed back to normal. Amazing what you can learn to do with watching a few youtube videos. Trying to do most of the work myself, outside of a few electrical issues that i'm not down to mess with.

*Wait- what the hell does having a home in Nashville have to do with Gray being a long-term player for the Reds?

*Had a fairly big money-line parlay with the Saints and Pats. That was a bad-beat.

Biggest shocker from the Fyre docs- not that millennials are stupid or that McFarland was a con artist. It was that people believed JaRule to be some sort of asset despite the fact:

- He hasn’t been relevant in 15 years
- He was ran out of the industry by 50 Cent and seen as a complete joke
- He’s really, really dumb.

How awesome has that little area of Madison in Covington become? Cool restaurants. Braxton is a great brewery. Awesome music venue down the street. Bars, condos and apartments opening up.

I mean, just add a sexual harassment suit to the 38 million McFarland will never pay back.

Pretty amazing how that all went down. Social media influencer. That’s a nice title.

Seems like if they had actually planned it out, had people that knew what they were doing, could have actually made a pretty dope festival.

Covington is a crime ridden hell hole, so not awesome at all.

* At this rate, we'll probably be buying weed from a store in 18 years, and flying to Colorado to bring home a load of legally purchased mushrooms. That would be awesome.

* Sonny Gray is very fortunate that he can hop in his car and make the 5-hour drive home to Nashville anytime he wants. Quite a luxury for a guy who makes $10 million/year.

* BNI groups -- oh, man. Don't want to, but got to.

* If you really want to get me excited about the 2019 Cincinnati Reds, go trade Nick Senzel for Corey Kluber. Now THAT will make us contenders in the NL Central.

* Hearing rumors there will be a new Jillian's going in downtown this year. Absolutely. Freaking. STOKED.

* There's so much poetic justice in the Fyre Festival debacle. Beautiful poetic justice.

Covington has a couple of nice areas, becoming gentrified. A lot easier to navigate than OTR. Can do some nice pub crawls and listen to music and still be home before the young 'uns take over.

-As a Tribe fan, I'd take that Senzel for Kluber deal in a heartbeat. Love Kluber, but we've hit our ceiling for the next couple of years with him. Might as well set up for the future. Would still have plenty of great arms. If you guys could take Kipnis off our hands, that would be great too, thanks.

-Scott Drew and Baylor is pretty much a perfect match. Baylor still hasn't recovered, PR-wise, from that mess 20 years ago. Scott Drew has never been able to shake his reputation as a shady recruiter. I don't know that Baylor can find a better coach(long-term) than Drew, and I don't think Drew will ever get a higher-profile job. Doubt he ever takes them to a Final Four, but he's winning 20+ games most seasons, and always sneaks up to bite a blueblood or two each year.

-Nobody has ever watched a recipe video on Facebook all the way through, let alone actually attempted to make it.

-Tried to get my kid to watch the conference championship games with me on Sunday. "Best football day of the year", I said. Nope. She wanted to watch the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships instead. Weirdo.

- To me, best football day of the year is some Saturday in October.

- Kyle Tucker is a cliche.

- Cats get Herro to become more consistent with his outside shot (up to 37-38%) and Washington to be his peak self creating for himself and others, and we’re going to be a handful.

- I associate Nelly with college a tad more than JaRule. The Outlaw DJ Jesse Warren loved pumping some Ride Wit Me.

- Best UK Basketball Jerseys (modernized):

2. ‘92
3. ‘86
4. ‘92 alternative blues
5. ‘89 (by Champion)

The CovCath story may be the perfect example of how social media and extreme political polarization are ruining America. This was a giant nothing of a situation until you add MAGA hats and start throwing around buzzwords like "white privilege" to spiral things out of control and get SJWs like Tucker firmly aboard the high horse. Then the right wing leaps to their defense, the left wing digs in and starts calling everyone under the sun a racist, and I have no clue if Putin is really secretly meddling in American affairs (the most recent season of Homeland was legitimately scary), but it would be a hell of a way to weaken and divide a nation...
