Seems to me that 8 is probably a good number (only adding 1 more game for the Championship run). Take the Champions from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, and Pac 12 - then add 3 "at-large" teams. Rewards teams for winning their championships, but also gives other teams the opportunity to compete for the NC.
That's essentially a 13 team tourney with conference championships being the 1st Rd.

I would imagine at some level there is a fear that adding an additional game would have a negative impact on attendance. And schools arent likely to want to give up a game on their regular schedule either.

Fair or not- I think this model is going to be around for a bit

It currently possible for an FBS team to go undefeated and not make the playoff.

In other words, YOU CAN WIN EVERY GAME YOU PLAY AND STILL NOT HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

If this doesn't convince that the current system doesn't work, you're not paying attention.

I also don't buy the argument that an 8 team playoff would dilute the regular season. People made the same argument about the BCS, and then the 4 team playoff, and they couldn't have been more wrong in both instances. Adding 4 more teams to the playoff is only going to make the build-up that much more intense. Instead of griping and whining about who is number 4, where there are realistically only 2-3 teams that could get that spot, you'll have upwards of 7-10 teams trying to get the last couple spots in an 8 team playoff.

While the top 5 may be sewn up with a couple of weeks to go, the rest of college football would be buzzing. It'd be incredible for the sport as a whole, and not just the top 2-3 teams.

Eh. This isn't basketball where Calipari could assemble a squad at Memphis that ran through a **** conference and then contend in the NCAA tourney.

UCF couldn't beat Bama or UGA's second string 1 out of 20 times.

Did you say this last year when they were 11 point dogs to Auburn...a team who had beaten the NC Tide to get to the SEC title game? You probably did, and then went into hiding to choke on your crow.

Did you watch the game? That was the last place any of the auburn players wanted to be.

I’m for whatever system continues to keep the state of Ohio out of the playoff.

Yeah....conference championship games aren't going away. No way they are giving up those cash cows.

If the move to 8 happens it will be 4 on campus games at the higher seed in mid December. The 4 losers would meet in a New Years bowl in order to preserve the bowl structure. Apparently that is a big issue.

That's catfagbgky level terribleness.
Given that in any other year, with 3 undefeated teams, Oklahoma would not be in the national title picture it has literally, by definition, diluted the regular season. You can say that makes for a more compelling postseason or whatever, but it is factually correct that allowing more teams into the national title picture has made the regular seasons somewhat less important.

After UCF declared themselves National Champs, I’ve got nothing for them. I hope LSU beats them by 300.

If UCF wins that game, do they claim a second national championship?

It may have been cute the first time, but will get a bit awkward if they try it twice in a row.

How is Shannon Sharpe not getting roasted for his comment last night??
Said to Deion Sanders “ I swear for God and 2 White men!”
Deion, LT and the blonde host kept asking him “what did you just say” all the while laughing

There are more Power 5 conferences than there are playoff spots. In theory, each league could have an undefeated champion (not to mention Notre Dame and Group of 5 teams) who could get shut out. Obviously 4 isn't enough.

8 is good, and 16 would work as well. Every other level of football has had a 16 team playoff for centuries, and that has worked just fine.

Plus, if there were a 16 team playoff, #14 UK would be playing at #3 Notre Dame. Wow. WOOWWWWW.

Speaking of which, UK already down to +4½ against PSU...
