Paris was incredible. The architecture, art, everything... just beautiful.
Did a ton of walking, which was obviously good for my fat ***. Somewhat counteracted all of the wonderful food and wine.
Musee D'Orsay was my favorite. The Louvre was fantastic. Almost too big. But D'Orsay is home to most of my favorite paintings of all time.
For an old art major like myself, I'm not sure it gets any better. I have never been so inspired. Amazing. I actually got teary eyed a few times.
Just walking around the old cathedrals and along the river was incredible. Hit up Notre Dame, Sainte-Chapelle, Sacre-Coeur & a little old Medieval church. The statues and details on every bridge and building are beautiful.
We went up to the Arc De Triomphe when all of the world leaders were there commemorating the 100 yr anniversary of the end of WWI. We just missed them marching up Avenue des Champs-Elysées together. But as I was getting ready to cross a side street, a soldier stopped me. The Trumpster and Putin's motorcades went by, literally 5 feet in front of me. Those 2 didn't walk up with the others. We got to meet some US veterans who were being honored at the ceremony. Pretty neat. There was also a sweet flyover.
The last day, we climbed up all the way up the dome of Sacre Coeur (Sacred Heart). Tightest, steepest spiral staircase I've ever seen.
Once we made it up, it was raining. There were a few worn marble steps up in the dome and I slipped. My right foot got caught under me and I pulled my quad and couldn't put any weight on my knee. I thought I had Carson Palmered it. Ended up not being too serious. I was able to limp around. Thankfully, that was the last stop of our trip. The walk back down and to the train was awful as was the airport the next day, but I am close to 100% already.
I thwarted a pickpocket on the train from the airport to the hotel as soon as we got there. He was too obvious. I saw him signaling to a couple of others up ahead of us and saw him eyeballing our luggage. I told my wife to be careful and of course she thought I was being paranoid/racist. (He looked like the "I'm your Captain now" guy)
Sure enough when we got up to get off at our stop, he did, too. I got between him and Marge and he immediate went for my phone in my pocket. I twisted his fingers and he put his hands up like, "My Bad." He continued to follow us, so I just turned around and loudly told him we didn't have anything else in our pockets so he just took off.
Other than that the people were very friendly, which was the opposite of what a lot of people had told me. Not knowing French was never an issue.
Rain caused us to change plans a few times. Would have liked to go to Versailles (no Booker) and Normandy. Hopefully, I will someday.
My first trip to Europe was great and I hope to go back. Rome is #1 on my future wishlist.
