How would you run the military?
I read somewhere that we’re dropping about 100 bombs per day on 7-8 different countries. We also have between 800-1,000 military bases spread out over 80 different countries and it costs between $80-100B yearly just to keep them open.

I’d say those are two damn good places to start looking at cuts.

Ok. No more politics in gyero from me.

C'mon Anthony!!! Not sure if you are just Ef'n with them just to Ef with 'em...but this county's nat'l security has been on a very slippery-slope w all the idiot IS groups out there (esp. within Europe), India, N. Korea, et al. and now is the time, (obviously), to take it back to the level it needs to be imo.

Why all the backlash here? Aren't you the very least bit concerned about your own personal safety?

This should be a NO-Brainer....imo.

Doesn’t Anth run a business? Surely the reduced revenue doesn’t have to be explained?

Come on, his parents run the business.

As long as there is room service, and he can get a nice ride in, it’s all good man.

There hasn't been a major war since the 40s. I'm more likely to get struck by lightning than a terrorist. My personal safety is just fine. Money for defense is great but looking around a bunch of countries do it pretty well by spending a lot less. Education, infrastructure and defense in that order.

Speaking of, Grunt is an excellent book on obscure military investments. Highly recommend.

Oh you mean a world war? No, guess the Korean, Vietnam, Gulf Wars, and Afghanistan we’re just fun little jaunts.

Stick to being a fortunate son.

It’s a little different when you’re the big kid on the block. A lot of countries get by spending less on defense because we’re around to protect them.

Been awhile rando's, feel free to skip

~ Bout to put the house on the market/start a build. Living with the in-laws on Lake Norman for the next 3 months. We get the walk out basement which is 1500 square feet with it's own bar/living room. I'll take it.

~ Probably looking at kid #2 in the next year as well. I'm no gold-plated W-2 wielding GYERO so #'s 1 and 2 make me nervous but also excited.

~ Our military spends funds in the most obtuse manner possible and I'm not sure if that's mandated by congress (probably) but when you tell someone they have to buy 100 more tanks than they need/want or else they get less funding - that's a problem. Not to mention what's already been mentioned, we outspend our "allies" (Trump is changing this term daily) by a hefty margin. I'm sure we could spread around the wealth and still be safe.

~ Speaking of politics, I'm finding the more I talk to people, the less likely they are to bring up politics. It's when you're in your own head posting to social media that your diatribe is so easily posted. I guarantee I could drink a bourbon or six with Boat (who I think I ideologically differ from) and still have a hell of a good time and none of it would come up seriously.

~ I hate politics.

~ I love GYERO.

We went to war with freaking Afghanistan.

:joy::joy::joy:

I think it's more accurate to say we went to war in Afghanistan, but not with Afghanistan.

We supplied arms to Afghan tribes and helped them fend off the Soviet Union.

Then, a couple decades later, we go in there and make the same mistakes the Soviets made (if the Soviet Union couldn't control that place, what makes us think we can?). And we end up fighting people who use the arms we supplied against us.

Major American Wars after WWII:

Korean War (1950 - 1953), 5 years after WWII ended
Vietnam War (1955 - 1975). 10 years after WWII ended.
Gulf Wars (1990 - present), 45 years after WWII ended.
Afghanistan War (2000 - present)., 55 years after WWII ended.

This world is full a F'n waste of our good people, fulla conflict and we need a strong military VS what Clinton & Obama have reduced it to imo....++ we need to take back our economic strength, as well. EF nafta and losing/giving away our industries OR ELSE...we'll ult. fail...

The last time we cut the military...under Clinton...the WTC was bombed (the first time), the USS Cole got bombed in Yemen, **** went down in Somalia, US embassies were attacked in Tanzania and Kenya, the WTC got attacked a second time on 9/11, Benghazi, etc.

Most of you don't know, but I went to college on ROTC scholarship. Graduated in 95. Only 2 students in my graduating class of 30 served active duty. Several wanted to go active duty, but were turned down for slots, because there was nowhere for them to go. Half the class got inactive reserves. A good number got educational deferments.

Not saying we have to go to Cold War levels of readiness, but a strong and active military is crucial in today's atmosphere. They literally were kicking people out in the 90s for whatever reason, and as a result, our nation's readiness suffered.

Some people say that we may have the watches, but they have the time. That was made evident with that blown Shot Clock call against Wisky. They had the time alright and we were sitting with our watches up our collective butts, Pulp Fiction style. Hold onto your butts, is right, Jules Winfield. You sure said it in that Dinopark that one night alright. Man.

Turning you into a "doctor" should be proof enough of our tremendous waste in government spending.

:joy::joy::joy:

Oh I must have really touched a nerve.

Actually it was cost effective for them to put me on scholarship, and get mandated years of service. You should see what they pay independent contractors.

But no they didn’t *poof* turn me into a doctor. They paid my tuition and I earned it. All of it. 4 years med school, 5 years residency, 1 year fellowship while you were flipping pages of the Ferragamu catologue.

But hey, I’m not sitting in the loge. Guess riding the coat tails has its perks.

That is just not a very cool/respectful thing to say imo, seeing doc placed himself over there only to help our boys out tremendously, over there man...(amidst the bombs, the suicide bombers & the resta the MF'n @$$holes wanting nothing better to see than dead Americans sent back here so that you have the freedom to crack on him/them on a message board so easily).

<-----back to lurkin'....

I think everyone is in agreement on this. Or at least I hope so. The debate is whether we need to spend nearly a trillion dollars per year to achieve it.

Seems pretty obvious to anyone paying attention that we spend exorbitantly for the purpose of making already rich people even richer, with national security an afterthought.

* New York randos.....

finished The Great New York 100 Mile Running Exposition for the third consecutive year.

took in a Mets game, and thoroughly enjoyed thanking their fans for taking Mesoraco, Bruce, and Frazier off our hands.

the amount of green space in NYC is amazing

9/11 museum had so many amazing artifacts. the second half of the exhibit with all the personal items was easily the most chilling.

Central Park just kills it. Perfect weather, too.

Pride Parade Sunday was huge. I have no historical evidence, but it seems to have become extremely mainstream, which is great. TV coverage, huge audience. Washington Square was buzzing with craziness.

* Treat yourself — don’t fall prey to extremely sensationalized media.

* I loooove whipping up on drxman, but his military service, and willingness to put his life on the line for our country = off limits, joke wise.

Fat AF, tho.

* Uber pool Sunday: ninja gal in the front is clearly drunk. Slowly unloads her shopping bag, then throws up in it several times. Driver says nothing. She then spills her puke bag out, and the driver says nothing. Had to endure that mess for 15 minutes while in transit.

3 stars, max.

* Casey makes no less than $6 million per year. She’s solid for most of the posters on this board, but that’s about it.

Shorts:

- Amazing all these cold case murders being solved by cops using genealogy sites.

- Puzzles me the craft breweries are still opening. I suppose there’s a market for taste rooms but how many more types of beer can there be?

- lol so Bassey shockingly doesn’t even have a diploma. Stanbury is such a weasel.

- Looking forward to Rudd’s Facebook pictures with young Haitian children.

- Pride is mainstream. Big day up this way. Speaking of which, the new ***** Eye is a damn good show.

- After doing some research, Reid Travis puts the ball on the floor much better than reported. This isn’t a dude Cal will have to park on the block. He and Washington should each be able to drive a bit.

~ Speaking of politics, I'm finding the more I talk to people, the less likely they are to bring up politics.

True that. I'm in Europe and have been here quite a bit this year. Despite what certain media types say (e.g., Mark Ruffalo's tweet below"), nobody has said a word about it to me in the course of all my time here. And my fellow American co-workers who are over here have said the same.

However, the Turks went absolutely bonkers last night due to Erdogan "winning" his "election". They stopped traffic and honked their car horns from 9:30 to 11:00 PM. Around 500+ in the streets for that, and I'm nowhere close to Turkey in Europe.
