Can't stop straight-line drives, don't deny entry passes well, don't rotate well, double-team inexplicably to random *** scrubs, don't contest in transition..

I mean, it's a systemic issue.

After the discussion earlier this week I made it a point to watch Fox's defense. [sick] He wasn't even trying. Didn't even have his knees bent half the damn time, was pathetic. And his whole role last night was completely out of whack. If you aren't confident enough that he's going to play don't even play him, having him there and having Briscoe run point threw off our entire flow to start the game. All in all our worst performance by far of the year and the only good takeaway was Bam's unreal improvement on the free throw line (and maddening regression of Fox on the line). Also was great tossing and turning until 12:30 and now being all out of it for the rest of the week. [thumb2]

Interesting to read the in-game the day after. I was all over the "we can't stay in front of anyone" and "calm down Cal," but I wasn't paying attention to the terrible inbound defense. GYERO analysis ftw.

The "Fox as a defender" conversation kept running through my head as they drove past us repeatedly and Cal went off/def w/ Fox & Hawk at the end. Think that one was settled.

Not saying Briscoe can't make $ playing basketball, but I don't think it's in the NBA. International or D-league maybe. He's a small power forward.

What concerns me the most is the Calipari and Monk relationship. Monk is constantly looking at the bench, and Calipari is constantly ripping on the kid. So basically Monk's playing while looking over his shoulder. I know Calipari does this with a lot of players, and it usually turns out well in the end, but right now, it's hard to watch. Monk makes a mistake, throws his hands up, and then he and Calipari start arguing with each other. Calipari calls a timeout, takes Monk out and they keep arguing. Then Calipari puts him back in the game...next time down the floor...wash rinse repeat.

Like I said, Calipari does this a lot...and it usually works out, but the whining and complaining is hard to watch when things don't go well. 22 PPG and 50% FG is hard to argue with though.

Cal's said several times as of late that he is willing to let Monk do his thing & even shoot some shots he normally wouldn't like because he's a special talent & can hit those shots but he won't accept the careless turnovers, lack of rebounding and effort on defense.

Monk's been inconsistent. He played so damn efficient against S Carolina followed up by last night's crap performance despite 25 points. That stupid *** no look one handed pass to Briscoe when we cut it to 3 was inexcusable.

Cal eventually broke through to Murray combined with the game slowing down for Murray. Cal just wants better rebounding, effort on d and making the simpler play.

It is whatever. Just hope Cal gets them playing a defense that can get us where we want to be.

Last night was inevitable. All the other top 5's lost, Cal with a ****** record in TBA, and the team basically begging for an L for the past 2 weeks. A perfect shitstorm. Learn from it.

The laziness and stupid gambles on defense are really chapping my ***.

Stop switching on everything. Stop allowing our worst defenders to be isolated in mismatches time after time. And don't wait until the last few minutes to play hard.

Briscoe seems to be taking the most heat, but at least it isn't an effort issue with him. Fox and Monk simply don't play hard half the time on defense.

That being said, we are 16-13 all time vs those idiots in that gym. How is that even possible? We just find ways to lose there.

Also, Fox was nowhere near 100% last night. He was favoring that ankle all night. Touched up his rythym on driving and landing. Got way too under the basket a few times and was worried about landing akwardly.

Also limping ever so slightly at times as well.

I'll trade that **** loss for a win on Saturday if that's what it takes to get these dudes motivated.

Not blaming the officials for the loss, but for Kentucky to be 7-11 with Roger Ayers officiating is pretty [sick].

I think Willis had one stretch of exactly two plays (1 on defense, and immediately after offensively) where he wasnt awful. And knowing he was going to get isolated late was like knowing the knife is slowly going into your stomach and youre about to bleed out slow and painfully (Again, see "Saving Private Ryan")

And Cal basically having to run on the court and place guys in the right places on half court offensive sets makes us look like a goddam circus show. ****.

I'm a big momentum guy. If we make one of the following we win:
1. Down 2 and Chief Willis misses open 3
2. Monks stupid flip to the post and
3. stupid manager not knowing how wipe up water

But we didn't and we lost. Its troubling. The 2011 team learned from that and eventually overcame it. But past performance does not ensure future success.

Seems like a lot of GYERO is tied into the Auto Industry (Booker, Willy, Geese, Grandepadre and then the rest of us who drive cars), where Trump is focusing a lot of attention. Makes a lot of sense that this little internet thread will basically be carrying the torch for the entire civilized world, now.

You have to accept our freshmen are eventually going to fold a time or two on the road in conference. Just the way it is in CBB but that's when you should be able to lean on your vets. Ours were horrible- Briscoe and Willis. Maybe Hawkins needs more minutes in these types of games.

How many times have teams gone iso on Willis?

Good grief. Opposing player always gets a bucket or foul.

I could stomach this and take the good with the bad if he hit some damn shots. Knew he wasn't hitting that 3 that would've put us up.

He shot FIFTY PERCENT from 3 land last year in league play. What is he shooting now, stat people?

You know, you really don't have to be that great defensively to win a title - you just have to be good enough for 6 games (see 2015 Duke). This team is fully capable of getting there.
Good news, I think it's easier to correct defensive issues than offensive issues. This team scored so easily so early that they never developed a mentality of stubbornness on the defensive end. They better learn, 5% tougher and those type of things.

When we really need a shot, like a big time, senior, this-isn't-happening-on-my-watch, shot?

0%, Richie. 0%.

And he had at least 3 just careless turnovers last night, almost 4 because he tossed it to a falling down Bam and Fox bailed us out. If you're a freshman, I expect freshman plays like that (Monk's dumb pass). If you're a senior who can't toss it in the ocean at this point or D up, in Mike Singletary voice...can't have it! Can't win with ya!

Actually, in league play Willis is 9-24 from deep (37.5%). Not as bad as I thought.

But those numbers are skewed by a 3-5 outing vs the Hogs and a 3-4 outing in Stark Vegas. (he did not attempt a single 3pt in the 2 games between those).

Re: Monk constantly looking over at the bench, I don't think there's any question the team would benefit if Cal backed off a little bit.

2014, he gets booted from the USC game, and we go on a run, come back and almost win.

2016, he gets booted from the USC game and we play arguably our best game of the year.

Obviously those effects are temporary in nature, and obviously we're not a better team when he's gone, but the players -- especially the freshmen -- seem to relax when they don't hear constant yelling from the bench.

NEW YORK (AP) — Brent Musburger is calling an end to his broadcast career. Millions of Americans experienced sporting events through his folksy narration, most often when he was the lead voice of CBS Sports during the 1980s.

Musburger will call his last game for ESPN on Jan. 31, a college basketball contest pitting Kentucky against Georgia. Musburger, who is 77 years old, plans to move to Las Vegas and help his family start a sports handicapping business. His visit to Kentucky's Rupp Arena brings him back to where he called Villanova's upset NCAA basketball championship victory over Georgetown in 1985.

Both Musburger and ESPN say his recent Sugar Bowl comments criticized as being insensitive

Assuming Cal's not hiding an injury or a disciplinary issue with this "illness" thing with Mulder, I'm 100% fine with him taking Derek Willis' minutes going forward. More athletic, rebounds better, defends better, shooting the ball with more confidence, and the size difference is irrelevant with how perimeter oriented Willis is. Willis can go let Earned Not Given tickle his armpits on the bench.

I really thought he'd be our most consistent, and ultimately, one of our most valuable players with his ability to hit outside shots. Had hopes for a Darius Miller-like year from him...not in style of play obviously, but another once-maligned senior putting it together and becoming a rock for a young team.

Yup, we should probably fire him or just name him recruiting coordinator. He obviously can't coach from the sidelines.

WE'D PROBABLY HAVE 7 TITLES IF ROBES OR THE BLACK FORMER UL PLAYER WAS CALLING THE SHOTS!!!

C'mon, man.

I'm still not sure how he managed to bungle the handoff to Monk when Willis was setting the screen and Monk was IN FRONT OF the Vol defender.

So somehow you got "HE SHOULD BE FIRED!" from "it might help to back off a little bit."

Not sure how you did it, but that's impressive.

Because this is GYERO.

But why even post something like that? Do you really think we are better when he gets thrown out of the game?

My point -- obviously -- was that the temporary effects of not having him chirping their ears is that they played looser in those games. Would it last? No. Would the team be better with him not there? No. But they (for whatever reason) objectively played better on those 2 occasions when he wasn't there. Pretty sure that exact point was made on this very message board by many people at the time...
