It is a beautiful mess. It sets up so much of what comes after it and it has two of the best and two of my favorite scenes in the entire MCU: The afterparty and two androids meet in the woods to discuss what it means to be human.
I love these deep rewind videos and this one in particular with a cameo from our boy Scott Padgett. They do a good job looking into the history leading up to the moment they freeze on.

Not Kooky, but absolutely not. Go on your trip. Enjoy the city. Just be prepared to see some weird ****, keep it movin' when weirdos act like weirdos will, and have fun. If you have little kids, have a script for however you want to explain mental illness and poverty, and don't freak out...and neither will they. NYC isn't the NYC of the crack epidemic, even post-covidpocalypse.
I grew up in a DC suburb and we went downtown all the time when I was a kid. In NW (the "nice," business district) there were homeless dudes everywhere, pooping in public parks, puking liquor into trash cans, and soliciting money from people who looked too friendly. My mom is incapable of not looking nice, and as an 8 year old I was tugging at her shirt to pull her away from the panhandlers who wanted to talk to us about how Stalin and the CIA tortured them or whatever. Walk with purpose, don't make eye contact, and DO NOT ENGAGE, and you'll be fine. It's not rude to brush off the dude who smells like an old trash can, and zero percent of people who are familiar with an NYC commute will think you're an ******* for doing so. Natives are more likely to go "stupid tourist" if you do engage. That's true in NYC, DC, Chicago, Cincinnati, any city I've ever been to in my life.

Maybe take the kids to a regular season Bengals game in Cincy, just as trip prep.
I hate texts with every fiber of my being, but I use it on the regular because everyone else does. How many times have you texted someone and they reply with something like "why are you mad?" and I can be in the best mood. It's like Costanza getting lemon juice in his eye. Verbal communication for the win!

Season football tickets feel so good to be in hand every August, but especially so this season. Hoping for lots of night games. Noon kickoffs can GGP.

This Trevor Bauer thing is getting weird. I’m not saying the chick isn’t in it for the money because maybe she is, but damn!
When an investigator says injuries are in line with what the girl says happened, and that’s that he strangled her with her own hair, punched her in the face, buttocks and genitals which left bruising and that examination was done within 48 hours of the encounter.
It’s clear it happened, but then texting Fernando Tatis Jr that Bauer is a wackadoodle afterwards.

The city still had enough man power to leave a note on our door telling us our trash/recycling cans need to be moved for some reason.

Hawaii basically asking people to stop coming because they can’t handle the tourism, I get it.

-Gal I was supposed to go to Jamaica with just got hospitalized with pneumonia and Covid (vaxxed), so that’s probably off.
-Did have a run in with a nice couple at work the other day. They saw I was from Lexington and said oh your co is from where we live and she went to school at the same place he did. I said oh you’re from the Pittsburgh area and she went to Clarion. They said damn, what they say about UK basketball fans is true lol.

Took a family trip to DC when I was 13-14. A young AW was absolutely fascinated by all the homeless people. That and the prostitutes. At one point we we walking around the monuments and I was going on and about finding a prostitute. Some guy told me if I wanted to see the prostitutes we needed to go to K Street. Took many years for me to get the joke.
My little brother was just admitted to the hospital with the Covid. Symptoms started a week ago Saturday and he was doing much better this past Sunday. He sounded like he had done a 180 when I spoke to him. FF to today and he sounded like **** when I called. Excessive cough, fever, trouble breathing. Shamed him into going to the ER. His son and wife both have it too. My nephew apparently is over it but SIL isn’t far behind my brother. None had their shots. Make of that what you may.
I’ve always been fascinated with Serial Killers. Bundy, Gacy, Dahmer, BTK, Green River Killer, etc. Watched “Invisible Monsters” on A&E last night about each of them. Man the mid 70’s-early 80’s were ripe with those dudes. Amazing how easily they got away with what they were doing and really only got caught because of a fluke.
The older I get the more I really enjoy a mid-afternoon nap. Lights out, tv off, 20-30 minutes and I’m completely refreshed. Hated naps a kid, young and dumb I guess.

The fights are usually in Canopy Level row 13 and higher depending on if you love or hate such things.

But a lot (more than 0, for fifth graders) of the lesbians were topless - out and about amongst the museums entrances and exits. I remember frantic teachers panicking to get us out of alternative exits at the Smithsonian, lest we see the sights that were part of someone’s iTITerary, but not ours.
It was truly a banner weekend for this Great Experiment.

I went to NYC in '88 to visit my uncle who lived in Manhattan. That was in the middle of the crack epidemic. Boy oh boy... what a time to go to NYC! Shaped a young Wayne Dougan's perspective on the world that's for sure.

I was in Manhattan and Brooklyn with my 7 year old girl and 2 year old boy 3 weeks ago. Had a blast. Never felt threatened or like they were seeing something they shouldn't (other than the gay liberals).

I’m good. I ran through the Central Business District earlier today. Didn’t see one boarded up building, saw working professionals walking around enjoying the beautiful afternoon and noticed a decent amount of new construction projects going on that I knew we’re coming.
If I want a Versailles type setting I’ll cruise down River Road and be in Goshen in 20 minutes. And yes, I agree Versailles, or at least the horse farms, are beautiful.
My wife took my daughter to NYC when she was 7. She was absolutely traumatized by the experience - never wants to go back again and has decided she's going to move to Colorado to live in the mountains when she gets older. The reason - in Times Square she saw Mickey Mouse walk around the corner, take off his mask and smoke a cigarette.
I'm headed to NYC this fall myself and I'm psyched. I also know it's a big city and sometimes things in big cities are gross. Those are realities one should be aware of, but nothing that should deter people from normal tourism. The realities of city life aren't anything new. People are gross, and turns out when you concentrate a lot of them in a given area, they can get REALLY gross. And ultimately...so what? Doesn't mean that a city and everything in it are a violent hellhole and not safe for children. Those visits to DC--where I got to go to the floor of the Senate, all the Smithsonian museum visits, to all the monuments, to the theater with my dad, to meet my dad for lunch when he worked downtown, the rides on the Metro--are some of my favorite childhood memories. The homeless dudes and the lady who accosted us for 15 minutes to talk about how Stalin and the CIA had her in a gulag and then deported her to DC (lol) are hilarious now, it wasn't "scary."
Fear of big cities goes hand in hand with "well that could never happen here in our nice little small town!" naivete. Both are silly. Situational awareness is a thing, and it's important no matter where you go. That's a really important lesson for a kid to learn, and I feel really blessed that I had the shot to learn it in a place like the District.

Some friends of ours were inside J Alexanders with their kids a month or so ago when that shooting happened out front. They crawled on the floor into the kitchen for safety at the direction of the manager. The kids are obviously traumatized and are in therapy. Never want to eat in another restaurant.

Taking my kids to Fremont Street in Vegas a couple of months ago was probably not the best parenting decision I've ever made.
It’s amazingly simple to travel to other cities and NOT be surrounded by homeless drug abusers. Some of y’all clearly don’t get out much and it shows.
Went to NYC a few years back and was forcibly injected with heroin and gay agenda by Antifa. Now I rarely eat steak.
