Shorts:

- How’s Miami, Florida as a town? Never been.

- Personality-only Favorite Calipari Era Ballers:

1. MKG
2. Ulis
3. Wall
4. Bam
5. Lamb

- USA Mens Basketball winning gold is akin to UK basketball winning the SEC. Of course, I want us to win but it doesn’t do much for me.

- Question from a soccer non-fan: Is Messi still at the height of his powers? Is he still the best in the world?

- Realized the other day that now sitting here at 42, I have spent exactly half my life on CatPaw. From my beginnings procrastinating at WT Young to today when I’m widely regarded as the GOAT. Been a wild ride.

- Very disappointed in the new Bronco.

- Some good new docs out-

Cocaine Cowboys
Obama
Malice in the Palace (tomorrow)

- This Reds team is so up-and-down.

- Just started this - it’s outstanding:

I think some took the "we don't keep score, no reason to hurt anybody's feelings" and extended that sentiment to participation trophies.

There is nothing wrong with a participation trophy, like Anth said, it gets kids excited about the game and puts a smile on their face.

But, I did coach in a soccer league where they didn't keep score and even 5 year olds want to know who is winning and losing. I would just keep score in my head and tell them.

-love seeing old dudes, fat asses and unathletic sports writer schmucks ***** about participation trophies. Shut up, losers. Except for Roy Kent, he's the best.

^speaking of Ted Lasso. Best comedy/drama I've seen in a while. Incredible.

- nice little 3 miler at the gorge yesterday, woods are good for the soul.

-Yeah, changed my tune after seeing how much the kiddos enjoyed their medals from Tee Ball. Very cool. At a young age, imo, participation trophies are perfectly fine. They were still hungry after seeing how much nicer the champions trophy was.

-Nothing about being an Olympian is a participation trophy. I didn't read the article, but if that's the take, it's ridiculous.

-Easy steak tacos. Skirt steak with simple taco seasoning, sauté chopped up onions and bell peppers in butter until brown, top however you'd like. I use sour cream, cheese, jalapenos, hot sauce and avocado. Always with rave reviews.

-No one likes to make fun of sports writers AND then defend them out of the other side of his mouth like Ol' WCC. What a conflict for that guy. Wonder why he does that?

-That Obama Birthday Party looked like a rager. Good for them.

-Woke up with an unexplained bruise on my arm that is bad enough I should recall the incident. Had some cocktails but not enough to not remember this. Getting old is weird.

-Solo Stove and Camp Chef first runs were this weekend. Highly approve of both products. Was unsure about the pellet style grilling but basically having a convection oven with smoke is actually perfect for me as I've been using our oven more than BGE lately. The sear box add on was the right call. That sucker gets to 1000 in no time.

I mock sportswriters who are cliches - most falling into the hyperliberal millennial set. That doesn’t mean they all are terrible. I’ve always liked Wetzel - and have said it here many times - because I generally think he’s good at his job and fair. Same with Paul Daugherty. Like I said, I haven’t read the article. If I disagreed, it wouldn’t be the first time but I still think he’s great.

As far as your comment, F off.

-I ate a bag of Frito's honey BBQ twists yesterday just because I saw them and knew I had to. Pretty fantastic. I don't do pure junk food often like that, but sometimes I give myself a break.

-Along the same lines, I'll absolutely smack a Slim Jim.

-A week out from school starting back and we're counting the hours. Get pumped, summer.

-First weekend without a hangover since June. Shockingly got a ton of ish done around the house. I suspect there may be some kind of correlation there.

-Buddy gave me a pair of lightly worn Red Wings that were too big for him. I haven't had a chance to really wear them out yet, but gotta admit I may be recanting on my "you don't need those boots" stance from a while back. Things are pretty unreal. Another thing to look forward to this Fall tbh. As a bonus my wife completely despises them.

-Cummings to TE may be the offensive story of the year. I mean, that kid is a football player. If used creatively he's going to create some problems for defenses IMHO.

-My understanding of the QBs from someone in a position of knowledge is Gatewood makes the short throws better and Levis struggles a bit there. I still feel like it's going to be Levis, but making that throw seems pretty imperative in this offense. We'll see.

-Major project underway at the house. Brick was failing above a basement 2 car garage. House was built in the 50's. Anyway, they ripped all the brick off and found water rotted headers that were causing the issue. Replacing those and the lentil. New brick. Not a cheap fix but my theory is it scared so many people off when we bought the sucker it's paid for itself in appreciation. New roof is next. SAE will be sleeping much better this winter, he hopes. Props to 73 for the guidance/recommendation of a contractor.

When I coached my son’s U6 team, if the kids were getting too bratty (on either side) by keeping score, I would quickly remind them how there was no score to be kept because they were constantly breaking the rules and all goals were invalidated by what was essentially their sub-par, poor play.

There’s nothing like a quick glimpse into the abyss to let kids “reset” their mindset and just have fun out there, IMO.

Once again MY Warren Co. South Little League team is out here representing KY. Not a team from Louisville or Lexington. Playing Illinois after beating Ohio 2-1 yesterday. Once again, Warren Co. is THE youth baseball Capital of KY. One thing that may be their undoing, hitting. They have solid pitching though.
Not trying to rain on their parade - and Warren county and Little League are fine - but Louisville and Lexington (as well as most other parts of the state where baseball is big) play Cal Ripken.

Would love to see how they stack up against the likes of South Lex/SE Lex/E-town Cal Ripken leagues. Will say travel ball has decimated the Louisville area Rec leagues. They were pitiful this year at the 9u level.

-Miami itself is great. Fantastic food, beaches, everyone there is bodied up with asses for days, biggest negative is traffic. Have friends that live there and spend two hours a day in traffic to work and two hours back home, unacceptable.

The people though are the WORST I’ve ever been around. Rude, arrogant, entitled and think they’re special. Couldn’t live there and can barely visit because of them. A lot of bars have tip buckets here that say, “Don’t Miami in Key West.”

Innumerable tourists have told me, “We stopped in Miami for a couple nights before coming down here and this is SOOO MUCH nicer. Everyone up there is rude and just expects you to hand them money with terrible service.”

They also put a 20% (at least) grat on everything and never tell you. Have to be careful.

-Ted Lasso is phenomenal.

-Playing at Severns Valley Baptist in Etown growing up we didn’t keep score officially but we (the kids) all repeated the score out loud after made baskets. We weren’t playing for fun, played for keeps.

Monday randoms...

- Back to work today after taking 3.5 days off last week for birth of #2. Whoever said the Sunday dreads don't exist is a f'n liar.
- Mother in law here for another 2 weeks (VERY THANKFUL) to help out and then my 4 week paternity leave starts on 9/7...just in time for football season. Also made sure not to lose a day by starting before Labor Day. Planning is key.
- #2 in one week has already napped more in 1 week than #1 did her first 4 months. Sadly, I'm not exaggerating. It got so bad that our pediatrician had us track every min of her sleep. I did this for 41 days and she had 14 days of 0 nap time. Brutal. Very thankful this one is a napper so far.
- House is coming along fine but SLOW. GC just informed us last week that he may need another 6-8 weeks. Was disappointing but it is what it is. We are renting till then in a small space so are counting down the # of days.
- Can not fathom having more than 2 kids. We saw a couple the other day in Lowe's who had 5 under the age of 10. Hard pass. I'm getting snip snipped very soon.
- $100 on the cats over 6.5 wins. If I were still in my mid 30's with no wife or kids, that bet would have had at least one more 0 on it.
- Wife informed me she had some friends and family coming down in October. When she gave me the exact date, I immediately looked at calendar and saw where Cats vs Dawgs in Athens. All in. Any others gonna make the trip?
- Had about 100 emails this morning with half of them being nothings. In my previous job at Valvoline, I would have had over 400 easily.
- Not a fan of participation trophies. OK with it under the age of 5 or so but after that, it's all about the W/L baby.
- Anyone else get crazy hangovers the older they get? I guess the less you drink the worse they get. Went out the weekend before #2 was born and had 6 beers and was completely useless the next 36 hours.
- GO REDS!

Aside from just not passing the smell test. I mean, when I first heard it I thought wow this must be a time traveler from the 30's seeing his first black person in major league baseball.

Racism is certainly alive and well in 2021 America, but audibly yelling the N word at a ballplayer in Denver, Colorado just never seemed all that plausible.

... or the fact that the same organization that was quick to put out a statement of how disgusted they were, still hasnt corrected it publicly- or for God's sake apologize to the guy for branding him a racist. Just going to let this guy hang and go about their business.

I played tee ball at Lyndon circa 1977 and we got participation trophies but we also got our 6-year old asses yelled at and belittled like men when we didn't do something right so it was still a different time. I also remember the shame of being in a league where all the teams were the Blue Jays, the Pirates, White Sox ( no Reds because everybody wanted to be a Red then) and even the Senators but I was on a team called "The Green Machine". Who wants to be seen in a Green Machine jersey/t-shirt?

Some on social media are taking the "It doesn't matter if it actually happened, it could have happened" approach to continue the discussion of racism in baseball.

I'm a Marlins fan (partial season ticket holder) and it did seem curious to me that this Denver racist would pick the final at bat of the game for Lewis Brinson to start hurling the n bombs. What about his previous four at bats? And why Brinson? Multiple other black players played in the game.

As for what Miami is like, it is a beautiful, modern city. But I do agree that the traffic and the people (really, like with any super large city) can be a major problem.

Went to a Rockies game two months ago and did not hear/see any overtly racist acts by any of those in attendance.

Did notice that they have a concession stand where they serve elk sausage dogs topped with cream cheese, however, so all bets are off.

Just read Wetzel’s column and I don’t understand the angst. It wasn’t mean spirited or “clickbait” as reported in here. Just a columnist writing a column. I found myself wondering the same thing last week in how I saw people tallying medals.

OK then, how are the Lexington / Louisville teams doing in the Cal Ripken tournament ? Did they win the state tournament ? Have they won in the US tournament ? Recently, have they won the whole GD Cal Ripken League World Series ? You can twist it that they play Cal Ripken, that is fine, I get it. But have they won anything ???? That was MY reasoning that Warren Co. runs **** in Little League. Is Cal Ripken considered the cream of the crop ? Honest question because I have never watched a Cal Ripken WORLD Series. I have seen US tournaments, but not world.

* There is nowhere in SWVA to get a smashburger, and it makes me sad. Got a Blackstone, but sometimes I'd just like to grab one right away.

*My burger sauce is basically from this video (fwd to 9:00 min - 14:00 min). I pour in a little extra pickle juice for the acidity.

*Is Donda ever going to come out? I've heard leaks and it sounds promising.

*Why does Spotify make booting up my laptop take twice as long? What a janky app. Great on the phone tho.

*I live four hours away these days, but it's been too long since I've gone to a football game. This year seems as good as any.

*Went to a theme park over the weekend with some friends. You can't outgrow rollercoasters. Just a blast. We had that one friend that gets queasy, and I felt bad for him, but tossing him my backpack before getting in line was a nice perk along the way.

*Hardees chicken tenders are a great fast food grab. You can grab 5 of 'em with honey mustard and a Coke Zero for under 500 calories. ....so they say.

*I tie my ties solely in half windsors. They're symmetrical and look great with anything but a narrow collar. You "four in hand" boys are doing it all wrong. Looks like ****.

*We're 3 weeks from September? Covid stuff has me in a time warp. It feels like we've been dealing with this **** for a decade, but 2021 seems like 3 months or so.

*When did fantasy football start sucking? I used to geek out on it; now I just enjoy the **** talk during the draft, and that's about it.

*What's your favorite houseplant? I have a purple heart, and it's gorgeous. Blooms pink flowers during the day and shutters at darkness.

*I often think about quitting my lawyer job and just bartending a'la Rogue. My student loans keep me grounded in this quasi debtors prison, though. I can't take any chances. #myjobsucks

I hear the n word here more than the Rockies game

rack to south lex teams smoking Warren’s LL teams. Our region is us, SE and South Lex in the cal Ripken state tourney. And somehow those 2 teams always get put in different sides of the bracket. Crazy.

our team has been decimated by travel ball. May be nearing the end of an era for our kids. Had most of them since they were 5, but times are changing. Also, ht to Huber and the bat jackets program. They have embraced the travel ball/league balance and are thriving. Not at the level of lex, but they’ve improved quite a bit.

“people are always surprised when they find out how tall and broad shouldered I am”

Now, there is no real rhyme nor reason on if they're going to be open, hours open, etc so call before you head that way.
