I'm sitting around here disillusioned with the whole-*** sport of basketball so to get myself re-engaged, I've been watching a lot basketball "clinics" on the ol' computer since there really isn't anything meaningful I can do with my bunch until December 14th.
I decided to give Vance Walberg's Dribble Drive Motion a look over again, and let me tell you - that system has become about as antiquated as the Flex in this day and age. Here are the main points he emphasizes for using this offense:
1. Get more layups/points in the paint (60-70% from this area or ~1.3 points per possession.)
2. Shoot more FTs than the other team (70 - 75% from FT means ~1.4 ppp)
3. Great way to get offensive rebounds which give you extra paint touches/shot attempts.
4. Kickout 3s are good, but they are still only the 3rd option of this offense.
5. Standstill 3s are discouraged.
6. Long contested 2s are a cardinal sin.
"I like 3s, but I LOVE layups." - actual quote
Spacing, angles, and reads are a huge part of the DDM which can lead to beautiful basketball, but the primary goal of this offense is to attack 1st or DRIVE!!! If the player is cut off, the skip pass to the opposite wing is encouraged. To take a 3? Nope. After the skip, the defense will be late to close out, resulting in a perfect opportunity for the offensive player to DRIVE!!! 3s are a secondary or third level option.
Just spitballing here . . . but . . . in the second half of the Richmond game, I saw very few ball screens. I think Cal is going to eventually mold this team into a dribble drive unit with adjustments (I know, I know). The big adjustment, or "tweak" if you will, could be having a revolving door of who will initiate the offense. I think we'll see him attack the other team's weakest on-ball defender to start the offense, which is why we saw some of Boston and Clarke run "point" Sunday. Eventually, he wants the ball in Clarke's/Boston's hands to DRIVE!!! and attack. Maybe he does that with the skip pass to them at the opposite wing, or maybe he allows them to initiate the offense ala Wall/Rose. Who knows? We'll see.
