*wipes off dust and cobwebs*

Quick hits:

* Tweonz started their junior year today. Pretty unbelievable. Tough year to be learning virtually, so hopefully they can get back to in-person classes soon. They're both pretty certain they want to attend UK, so 👍. It seems impossible that the campus has changed so much in such a short time, until I consider that "short time" is actually almost 30 years. That's a real kick in the ***, along with having to look UP at boy tweon.

* I have a lot to say politically, so I won't.

* I haven't touched a golf club in over a year, but I am addicted to Golf Clash. My nephew introduced me to it and I've essentially played it non-stop since.

* Speaking of grilling, I bought a new one for the first time in 20 years. Thought I would get another Weber, but went with a Napoleon instead. Seemed like I could get more for my money than I could with a Weber, and I've been really happy with it. It's gas, but I have the option to use charcoal. Also has infrared rear and side burners. The side burner gets up to 1600 F in a minute or two, so I can get a really good sear. Sashimi-grade salmon, skin side down, on the IR burner for a couple of minutes is absolutely ridiculous.

* I REALLY need the NFL. College football is the highlight of the sports year for me, so I'm low-level depressed about its absence this fall. I know there will technically be games, but it's not the same. At least it looks like the NFL is going full steam ahead, so fantasy football is on. We're doing an auction instead of snake for the first time in 20 years on Saturday, and my excitement is way out of proportion, but damn I need some football.

* Any good podcast recs? I've been heavy into history podcasts - listened to everything Dan Carlin has done multiple times - so need to switch it up some. I used to listen to KSR religiously, but the political stuff got tiresome and I lost interest. No sports didn't help.

* How cool would it be to have WSloot as a mom? Almost worth having anth as a dad. Almost.

* I'm honestly really concerned about downtown Louisville. It's a dumpster fire right now. There seemed to be a lot of great momentum and revitalization, but thanks to Covid and the peaceful (🤨) protests, small businesses and restaurants are dropping like flies. Not sure when we became Chicago Jr., but here we are. Sucks. I work from home exclusively now, so I don't have much need to go down there, but still.

* @Bonzo Cat - I think Carouselambra was an anomaly. I prefer to think that a 1980's Zep would've followed the Wearing and Tearing, Darlene, and Ozone Baby path, assuming Page got his ish together.
- “Wondery” puts out a lot of good history podcasts.

- For kindersoccer with my son, I try to get him kicking with the side of his foot or laces - and with both feet (I’ll call out which foot he should kick it with and lead him to that side). I also pass a lot with him on our concrete driveway because the ball will roll with better pace and give him better runway to time his kick and better feedback on how’s he’s hitting it, IMO. For games, I just try to kick it past him and hit my CPO Kia Sorento (who cares, obvs.) and he tries to hit a retaining wall. Or I’ll stand with my legs apart and get him to pass it through them - and move back a step each time he does. I also draw a lot of “gate” targets for different points and make math games out of it.

Good Morning:

:: RE: Grilling...There's a lot to be said for an old school Weber kettle grill and chimney starter for rookies. It's versatile, way cheaper than a Genesis and you learn the basics of making and controlling your own fire. Honestly, it's what I would recommend for a grilling noob. There are a ton of tips, tricks, recipes, and techniques on the interwebs to help you along.

:: Eventually, you will get tired of cleaning up ash when all you wanted to do was grill burgers or chicken breasts. The returns diminished for me anyway. Waiting 20 minutes for the coals to get right for four or five burgers stopped making sense to me.

:: While I was laid up I splurged on a real knife. A Blue High Carbon Steel Kiritsuke Japanese all purpose knife. My word...the balance, the weight, the blade...it's gorgeous. I had no idea a knife could be so good. The irony...it's too nice. I only use it when I want to show off.

:: I've had a love/hate relationship with our UK CSA basket over the years (YOU try to do something with 2 dozen heads of kohlrabi). However, this season it has been absolutely kick ***. Nice diversity and the tomatoes and melons have never been better.

:: Tomato Sandwich...Toasted White Bread (personal prefernce), Duke's, late summer 'mater slices, salt, pepper. Hell yeah.

:: With all these practice reports it would be a real shame if the guys went through all this to end up not playing. I mean, I know you have to get the team ready to play. It would be peak suck to go through all the work of fall camp and not having any games to play when it's all said and done.

:: BRax...I saw your twitter post yesterday. I still don't have the right words except to express how sorry I am for your players' family.

Anth, most of these guys chimed in with the common sense stuff. Learning how to strike the ball is the biggest thing, just dont let him get in the habit of "toeing" the ball. All little kids want to it because initially they can strike it harder that way, the problem is its like a knuckleball and the harder you kick it the less control you have.

Way too many Fantasy Football Podcasts (I know...NERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRD)

The Fantasy Footballers and Fantasy Pros are my go-to FF podcasts.

“Wondery” puts out a lot of good history podcasts.

Tides of History is the only one I'm familiar with, but I'll check out the others.

My favorites, besides Hardcore History, are History Unplugged, Revolutions, Dark Histories, and about 5 or 6 WWI podcasts.

I mostly stick to true crime pods. Dateline has every episode in audio format now which is unreal for my road time. Crime in Sports and Small Town Murder are hosted by the same pair of comedians; the CIS episode about Pac Man Jones is incredible. I haven't gotten to season 3 yet, but the first two seasons of Accused from the Cincinnati Enquirer were outstanding. Stranglers and the first season of Crimetown are excellent and cover subjects almost no other major podcast do (Boston Stranglers, the actual Mafia). Small Town Dicks, Crime Junkie, and Timesuck are all fun in small doses.

For non-crime, Lore, Fictional and Myths and Legends speak to my misguided-thought-English-major-was-a-fine-idea brain.

Payne Lindsey can get PUMPED, though. That self-important douche is the worst. I couldn't finish the Atlanta Monster or Up in Vanished because he was so up his own ***. Pretty much everything on the Parcast network has been cheesy and over-dramatized in my experience.

Mike Duncan’s original History of Rome podcast is epic. His new Revolutions one ain’t bad either.
Haven’t gone beyond the free episodes of Tides of History yet. Is it worth paying for the older archived episodes?

  • Hiked the full siltstone trail this AM. Little over 13 miles. 2,500 ft of elevation gain and fall over the course of the trail. The last two miles were just brutal as everything started to hurt, but we finished the whole thing in 4.5 hours including breaks.
  • Second (non-holiday / non-weekend) day off since Covid started (that’s directed at a certain person. You know who you are). Needed it. Work’s about to get real for the next couple months.
  • MaxP’s Cincy “high-road” tweet was underrated. I laughed pretty good on that one.
  • Added a propane grill to the mix this year. So nice to just turn on the grill, have it at 5-hunny in 10 minutes, and have little to no clean up after whipping up some burgers, tuna steaks, or chicken breasts. To me it’s more about not having to clean the stove or pans in the kitchen when you make something quickly. Still use the Weber for real grilling or smoking.
  • 2 of 3 or our children got into it with their teachers today. And when I say teacher I mean their mother. She’s going to either turn into a drunk, get committed or worse during this NTI. But whatever happens, she’ll be better at this than I would have been.
  • The CJ releasing the story Re:and then pulling it back after Fischer complained is crap journalism. WTF

-Love you Wayne but you require checking as much as anyone around here.

-What story re:Fischer?

-Anyone ever added a searing burner to an existing setup? Building a new deck with BGE and stone counter. Dropping a sear box in there might be dope.

Negative test for my daughter and I. So hopefully I only destroyed the golf course, and didn't infect every person out there.
My bourbon trials have been really successful if you're not following the BigSexyCat China Virus thread. Next weekend plans to to be phase 4 with Derby on tap.

Welcome home CMD.

Thanks for the grill recs, my decision on gas is quick heat up and less cleanup. 95% of the time it will be 2 steaks or couple burgers. And I’m impatient.

fylm, what version genesis is your rec? Is the sear zone and side burner worth getting the 335 over the 315?

Peeping those Napoleons too, damn good reviews for less $ and 15yr bumper to bumper.

I have the 335. I like having the side burner so I can fry outside instead of stinking up the house. You can do without the sear channel. I don't think it does much.

Big fan of the Fantasy Footballers. I love the grass roots hard working way they've built their brand. The UDK is dope.

Do you use the rack attachment on the black stone? I perused those a little this AM. Intriguing.

I have not used a rack attachment. Only had mine about a month.

would also recommend getting a hard top cover versus the tarp. It’s an extra $50 but well worth it. Also those little disposable alumnium drip tray liners.

- So I've decided to go for my dream job of becoming a Wilderness Therapist - 7 days working in the field - and 8 days off which essentially means I will be camping half of the year. The lass is on board with it, we just have to find a place to move: Asheville, Colorado, Utah, Vermont, etc.

- I'm very surprised about the U of L predictions by coaches/press. I guess they haven't taken into account that we have beat them to death the past two years with us being ranked behind them.

- Still a bit unsure about recruiting in basketball, maybe Cal is going the route where all of the top guys go to the D League and isn't wasting time on recruiting or maybe he's getting old. I don't know.

- Browns will finish 9-7 this year...the Reds still suck unfortunately.

After the basics, next up move on to learning headers, banana kicks, and most importantly, THE FLOP. No kid should learn to play soccer without having the flop in their arsenal.

Any opinions on New Riff Single Barrel ?

Gas or charcoal, why would anyone go thru the trouble of grilling 4 burgers ? I grill a minimum of three nights a week, always throw some side items on. Whether it be hot dogs, Kielbasa, corn on the cob, pork steaks, wings, what ever. IF i was to cook just 4 burgers, the skillet on the stove would be the play. But then again I turn grilling into an all evening, drink fest treating it as a hobby / release time. I have to have the Direct TV (wireless) out there with what ever is on muted and tunes going.

Laker haters sure have been quiet since game 1. Same with Milwaukee Bucks.

Put in a big gambol prop bet over the weekend. Arkansas under 2 wins. There are 2 winnable games. Ole Miss and @ Mizzou. At worst a push if the y win both (they will not). $200 is about a sure thing as there is in gambol.

Prolly throw a play on UK under 5. More so to pay for a good season. if i loss, that means UK wins at least 6 SEC games this year. I am willing to throw some coin on it to happen, if not, I get paid.

Gambol dummy here... Have the oddsmakers factored in the odds of the season going unfinished with these over/unders?

Currently without a gas grill (except for the aforementioned side burner), as my burner tubes needed replaced. Bought some "universal" replacements, and they didn't fit. Broke the old ones taking them off, as they were pretty rusty/brittle. Feel guilty buying a whole new grill, as I still have the WSM and just got an Ooni Karu. How many outdoor cooking options does one need?

Speaking of the Ooni, mastering neopolitan pizza dough ain't easy. Even so, the pizzas come out just ridiculous. Might make some more this weekend.

Left Nashville and moved to KY just before the holidays. The decision was tough, but it has definitely worked out in our favor thus far, as the amenities that Nashville has to offer have been shut down anyway. Nearly tripled our square footage and made money on the move. Working from home with a toddler and newborn in the house would've been nightmarish with <1300 sf.

Can you explain what a 'wilderness therapist' does? Or how one progresses through life to become one?

I'm not flaming - I just honestly have no clue.

Asking for PTI (pti).

The program I applied for services adolescents 13-18. It is a means of teaching basic resiliency and how to solve problems. In this job I would provide basic instruction as well as counseling. Self-Reliance and Self-Efficacy are the basis of the program.

I mean..

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms...

Finally, someone with an astute musical palette. I read that JPJ claimed they were going to open the '80 North American tour with Carouselambra, which is why I think that sound was going to stick :flush: Plus Page was a damn wreck chasing the dragon, they needed as much synth as possible to hide him.

If they had cut Hot Dog, South Bound Saurez and I'm Gonna Crawl and replaced them with the three you listed and Walter's Walk, then ITTOD has a completely different (heavy) sound (better).

* Time to start thinking positive with football, folks. Power 3 is playing this year. NFL was never in question, especially now that they posted those results off 53k tested yesterday.

* Ten Thousand makes by far the best workout shorts. 7" inseam w/ linear. #profit

* Next door neighbor is the type to leave their empty garbage can in the front yard for 3-4 days after pickup. Lazy f*ks, annoys the hell out of me.

* Genesis 330. Wish I had grabbed one with a searing station but foolishly got a side-burner. F'in n00b.

* Not sure what the Doc cooks his steak on? May need a few hundred more food pic texts to confirm

* Has any leader, anywhere, designed a plan to slowly start phasing out masks? Too soon?

* The new Bill & Ted's [sick]

* Interesting take having this new Bruce Wayne looking like a refurbished version of The Crow.

* @Geese Feeder escort my Old Ezra7 to Lexington this weekend. TIA!

A gift, it is fine....use it as a mixer, or on the golf course/ball game in a flask. Way overpriced if you were to buy for yourself.
