False. An immature arm torquing their elbow multiple times a game and while throwing location will do damage to the elbow. Not a myth.
Perhaps it was my dad, who played professional baseball telling me to avoid it. I was disappointed too. Was wanting to work in a screwball when I was 10.
Overuse is absolutely the main culprit. On that point, I will agree.
I started pitching around the age of 12. Never could throw fast so I learned a change and a curve. By 14 I could throw a nasty curve, the stuff legend actually, and my elbow is fine. My shoulder, on the other hand, is shot. Sure, there was an innings per week limit but pitch count had never been heard of. I imagine in some, if not most games, i threw at least 150 pitches, probably more.
Im not advocating kids throw curves but i think overuse is more to blame.
