False. An immature arm torquing their elbow multiple times a game and while throwing location will do damage to the elbow. Not a myth.

Perhaps it was my dad, who played professional baseball telling me to avoid it. I was disappointed too. Was wanting to work in a screwball when I was 10.

Overuse is absolutely the main culprit. On that point, I will agree.

I started pitching around the age of 12. Never could throw fast so I learned a change and a curve. By 14 I could throw a nasty curve, the stuff legend actually, and my elbow is fine. My shoulder, on the other hand, is shot. Sure, there was an innings per week limit but pitch count had never been heard of. I imagine in some, if not most games, i threw at least 150 pitches, probably more.

Im not advocating kids throw curves but i think overuse is more to blame.

This is entirely an Old White Guy rant, but I'm not sure that organized sports before the age of about 12 are even good for kids. We used to just roam around the neighborhood and have spontaneous wiffle ball games, touch football games, etc with very little adult supervision.

And it was fun.

Getting bitched at by your dad or another adult to learn how to play an organized sport kind of sucks when you're a kid, imo.

Organized sports are great for kids as long as parents/coaches are sensible about the whole thing.

What IS sad is that it doesn't seem that kids play pickup sports outside anymore, save for the occasional park that has a hoop, or the local rec center. Growing up, any clear day was likely to have a neighborhood game of kickball, football, etc. But from what I can tell, kids don't just randomly get together to play in person anymore.

Maybe I stated that wrong, but whatever. The fun of youth sports is hanging with your buddies, not instruction from adults. If that is a bad take, fine. But I have many more fond memories of just hanging out with other kids than I do of baseball practice where some old dude tried to teach me how to hit the cut off man.

We got into a little street hockey kick, spent all our allowance on all the equipment... the whole deal, one day we decided to make it official and spray paint the street like a legit hockey rink. We were so proud. Our parents didn't see it the same way. Thankfully I lived in Shively.

Make sure that you teach them to throw submarine also. Well, as long as they are using the proper mechanics that is. Shew, 9 year old little Johnny throwing a submarine, nasty curve ball will be the talk of Little League. Key is you have to make sure the mechanics are proper. If proper , no way constant snapping of an undeveloped young elbow will do any harm. It's all in the mechanics. Or so Jason Witten told me.

Playing street hockey on rollerblades was a thing for us also(Pretty sure the Mighty Ducks was to blame). My brother even got some goalie equipment and we'd play half court hockey where the defense would have to take out to mid line before turning around to play offense on the same goal. Got really good at rollerblading which was a fun way to travel around the neighborhood as well.

I can't imagine growing up not doing outdoor neighborhood sports and activities. I do remember on those days that most of the neighborhood kids were gone or busy being bored out of my skull.

I could get on board with no organized sports for 6 and under. At that point, it's just babysitting for the coaches (speaking from a position of knowledge) and a photo op for parents. Even the most advanced 5 year old has an attention span of about 3 and a half minutes.

We have a program called "Smart Start" for ages 4-5 that's pretty ideal. No teams, no games, just a weekly intro to skills in whatever sport (they offer courses in golf, baseball, football, basketball, and soccer) you're choosing. An instructor teaches the skill and shows them a drill, and parents are out there alongside the kids doing it with them. Nice inexpensive way to see if a kid has even the slightest bit of interest in something before you commit to an entire season of it.

I was against anything until 5 but all his little buddies were playing so we went along with it. He loved it and thankfully ended up on teams with great coaches interested in having fun.

My high school buddies were mostly nerdy white kids, and after school nearly every single day we went straight to the Harrods Hill basketball court to play 5-on-5 for hours.

Weekends we had the keys to the gym at Southern Hills UMC, and played full court games to 120. Usually started at midnight.

That was a solid 200 days a year of playing pickup ball. Which reminds me, Malcolm Gladwell and his 10,000 hours of practice theory can eat a dick.

Hard to get a group of kids to play a pickup game when everyone is practice/training etc every night.

I mean back when that was allowed of course

- I honestly can't tell most of the time if Rogue is just trolling the absolute **** out of all of us.
That story was 100% true. If I were trying to look cool or whatever I wouldn’t have admitted to being very worried about my well being. Will give updates as they occur.

Sandlot is the answer.

The Ol scoot scoot gets 100 miles/gallon and I’ve filled it up like normal, just cruising around but honestly the bike is becoming more the regular vehicle of choice.

Kid wanting to go to the park to play ball, is in fact better than wanting to go to the park to jump on a pole or a pipe. Say No to Drugs and poles. Which brings me to a point of a very touchy discussion. I get allowing kids to express themselves, but D-Wade's kid was "allowed" to choose his / her gender preference at a way too young of an age in my opinion. if I read correctly, he was allowed to "choose" around the age of 10 ? He referred to Zion / Zaya as the "she" pronoun for the first time at age 12, but supported the decision before that. I do not know that i could support my child on that kind of decision at search an early age, damn sure would not refer to the kid as he / she which ever they decided to be. Just way too young. Adolescence is a very important part of ones life, making decisions before is just a mistake.

In the best interest of the rest of us, procreating should be off the table for you. Maybe do a fish tank or something. And stay away from kids at the park.

Well seeing how I am 52, and my youngest is 21, I would say my days of procreating are behind me. But thank you for your concern, and I appreciate the kind words. But having said that, I did very well with the procreating I managed to do. 29/25/21 year old boys (now men), all 3 are very educated, the 2 oldest have very successful careers, both have very beautiful wives, the oldest even managed to procreate (3) very beautiful grand daughters I adore (this procreating must run in the JEANS, LOL, AMIRIGHT), the works really. The 21 year old is getting started and is a chip off the ole block if you know what I mean.

I will end with a favor in return, beings we are amongst friends here and asking for such. In the best interest of ME and me only, (don't want to drag innocent bystanders into this) I ask that you GGP, EAD, and GFY. Thanks in advance.

Sprinkles.
