I said its "basically" a travel team, just meaning the team was handpicked, not just formed randomly like most of the teams in the league. We don't travel. Sorry for the confusion.

A few years ago we got participation trophies for completing a large transportation and warehousing transformation at a medical device manufacturer. I can assure you everybody wanted to strangle the hen who decided to order those, as opposed to just holding a happy hour.

I mean the “our team plays together in 4 different leagues and just came here to mash in this rec league” crowd isn’t much better
This is exactly what is happening, and while I do apologize, the league is located in the prestigious 40502 zip code so I do get a lot of enjoyment in the skullcrushings.

I don’t understand the fuss about participation trophies. We got them every season for whatever sport we were playing, but it didn’t impact negatively in the least. In 4th grade we lost the city soccer championship in a big upset. We got a second place trophy. Nobody was like, “sweet, a second place trophy, I feel better now.”

And for young kids - at least my daughters - they’re not going to try one ounce harder in whatever sport they do to get a first place trophy just because there isn’t a participation trophy for the kids who don’t win.
I'm with you.

If anything is diminishing kids competitiveness (and I'm not sure that it is), it is the parents pushing this damn travel ball year around whether it be soccer, basketball, baseball, etc. There typically is a winner but there is no real season, no finality, no lasting pride. Lose ===> oh well, we go to E Town next weekend, everybody make sure to attend your mandatory daily 3 hour practice! Win ====> good job! We go to E Town next weekend, everybody make sure to attend your mandatory daily 3 hour practice!

If you won a county championship or your particular region in youth sports 20 years ago it was a lasting accomplishment, typically you had your name on a plaque or a large trophy displayed for everyone to see...now it's just "here is your piece of plastic too bad no one knows you won except your parents and their facebook friends they can now brag to which is the only reason this travel league exists in the first place".

It's our generation that is screwing the whole thing up...these kids aren't running things.

The hundreds of travel ball "national championships" every weekend where the winning team get championship rings is a bigger problem than participation trophies.

My rude awakening was realizing the number of these travel teams (sports, gymnastics, all of it) that do the fundraisers, panhandling outside Wal-Mart, etc. Up until a few years ago, I mistakenly thought those were school teams. I had no clue travel parents were raising money to support their kids going to these places (or pay their coaches or entry fees or whatever).

Lots of participation ribbons to be doled out in the ol' GYERO thread posting division, but it hasn't slowed many folks down.

I used to love getting the District and Region Champ patches for my letter jacket.

If your kid plays in the Upward Bound League, it means they will not ever play varsity or any level worth a damn. there is always the one or two kids who play Upward so that he can average 15-20 per game.

Yeah, sorry, I'm not donating for you and your 8 year old to go to Nashville, Panama City, or wherever.

Participation trophies are poop. Let them earn it.

My 3 year old loves playing basketball, tells people he wants to be a basketball player when he grows up. I couldn't wait to get him on a team.

Anybody else hold a state title for excellence in a foreign language?

Top 3 finish in the state for an art competition?

Didn’t think so. Basic bitches.

My early years, pre-12, were in the VA county that borders Pike County(Grundy). We didn’t get **** for winning or any participation trophies. You got your team pic in the weekly newspaper and bragging rights against the other elementary schools.

Our only sports were football, baseball, basketball and you played all 3 because most schools only had about 100 students so the talent pool was small. Only 3 football fields and 2 baseball in whole county back then because of the terrain, so you watched every game between all teams and talked ****

The "everybody gets a trophy!" whining from anyone under the age of 70 is pure effing nonsense. They've done that as long as I've been alive.

Pretty rich that they never ask themselves who was giving out those trophies. I don't remember kids giving them to themselves.

Second place, WKU statewide history contest 1983. Notable because the only guy who beat me was my Ballard classmate, who ended up being our valedictorian that year. At least there was a Ballard 1-2 sweep - typical BHS dominance.

Ballard guys may remember Ms. Sisney, who was our American history teacher. She was fantastic. Was named national teacher of the year a few years after I graduated. Practically everyone who took her class got a 5 on the AP test and placed out of American history in college.

I won the county science fair in the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th grade - straight up first place. Like a boss.

Anyone mention the phenomenon of all these traveling kids having overuse injuries and 15 year olds having the knees of 30 year olds? Apparently playing 1,000 games a year is not healthy for your body at a young age - who knew?

I got a 67-F in AP English third quarter because I turned in all of my portfolio assignments late and got a 0/400 with 900 points available for the quarter.

But, I still had to turn them in to graduate, so I printed one on paper Kroger bags (cut to 8.5x11), printed one with the phrase “purple monkey screwdriver” inserted randomly in every line of text, printed one where every word was either just magenta, yellow, or cyan ink, and I forget how I did the last one.

I helped tank our school’s KERA funding and still got my UK English credit with a 4 on the exam.

About time for a 20+ point win. Haven't had one in league play yet.

Here's the shoes that the staff will be wearing for the game tonight and that Cal will be wearing until he changes into dress shoes at halftime.

There was a dude in my class in middle school who came in 3rd in the National Geographic Bee as a 7th grader. The following year he got this question in the first round of our in class preliminary session: Which city is further west - Reno or Las Vegas?. He said Las Vegas and was eliminated. Talk about a dude who didn’t want a participation trophy.
