Wow. Didn't think they were ready to win a game like that.

Onto the next one. Some good. Some bad.

Getting nothing from Whitney/Brooks was kinda discerning. If you don't want UK playing EJ/Richards together, Brooks gotta step up.

NO bitching though. Nice win

Good win, boys!!!!!

It was ugly, but Maxey and crew pulled it out.

-Maxey was a freaking stud.

-The guards balled

-Sestina was a rock despite taking so few shots.

-If we get Josh Harrellson production from the 5, that will be outstanding.

We looked like we were tossing rocks at a laundry basket for a bit, but we managed to do just enough to win. Once we get our offensive roles situated and figure out what works and doesn't, we have good offensive potential despite the actual output tonight. Sestina is skilled at the 4 and doesn't make a bad decision. Our guards are slippery and can create. We just weren't playing with tremendous purpose and it was difficult to see what we were trying to do out there. Trial and error through the season will hopefully clean that up.

It’s an interesting and fun group with one budding star in Maxey.

Whitney and Brooks will only get better with time.

Sestina is an adult on the court who provides spacing and defensive rebounding.

No beef with Richards, although if he would finish that jump hook young man might realize his dreams.

Need more from EJ and Quickley.

But what a nice W in the pocket to start the season!

Next losable game? Ohio State? Louisville? We could be #1 for a while.
Ohio State's good. They supposedly beat the brakes off of Louisville in one of those super secret closed door scrimmages a couple weeks ago.

Anybody read Sprawlball? Super heavy nerd stuff, but one of its main points is that shots like the last one by Maxey are actually okay and should happen more often.

Sleep better tonight knowing that noted UK hater and MSU *scribe* Graham Couch (@graham_couch) had a bad night and hopefully the rest of his week and life is miserable.

Tonight he blamed the loss on officiating and referred to the SEC as the "Confederate brethren"
Imma get blocked by him before I fall asleep

I haven't read it, but it matches intuition and what the data say about 3 point shooting. Plus, players like Harden, Curry, and Young are showing its effectiveness.

Just think, how often are you relieved when the opponent doesn't take a three pointer? Also, how often do you see a shot like that go in? Personally, I'm always quite relieved by a miss and it seems somebody makes a deep one like that every game. I often find myself hoping for shots like that when the offense is tight, especially when you have a guy like Monk or Maxey, rather than a forced shot with no time remaining on the shot clock.

-Maxey... What can you say? His release is beyond quick. It's sudden. He doesn't give it away with his dribble or his shoulders, he just backs out like he's gonna drive on you and then, bang.

And speaking of the drive... he's an 18 year old kid who's supposed to be a senior in high school right now... and he's hitting absolute circus shots off the drive against the #1 team in the country in Madison Square Garden? GTFO.

That was one of the most impressive freshmen debuts of the Cal era... maybe the most impressive?

-Sestina... doesn't make mistakes. Always in the right spot. Great chemistry guy. Hits open shots, not rattled. Yes please.

-EJ Montgomery... I mean I don't get what Cal is seeing there. Two rebounds in what had to be 25-30 minutes.

-Richards I'm pretty much fine with at this point. He's an ideal 5 for this team if you're dead set on having a true 5 at all, which Cal is. What I really liked was that lineup we had in at the very end of Hagans, Maxey, Quickley, Sestina, and Whitney. I'd love to see more of that.

-Quickley still looks like a great piece for this team and he came out balling, but when the bright lights were on he looked scared and launched a bad three. Baby steps. He's ready, he's just gotta have confidence he belongs out there.

Great, great win. And because the selection committee is stupid, regardless of what this game means to our true talent level, it's gonna look beautiful on our resume in March. Probably worth a couple of spots by itself.

Let's go boys. Give us our crown and line up the challengers. College basketball is back.

P.S.- F*** Cade Cunningham, F*** James Wiseman, F*** Penny Hardaway, and just for fun, F*** Zion too. I like my team.

* If Maxey can keep hitting threes, this team is going to be absolutely deadly. He and Hagans are both dogs. Love our backcourt.

* Sestina led the team in minutes by a smooth 2 seconds over Maxey. It is impossible to not think of Harrelson every time you see that kid. He's got that veteran leader vibe already. He definitely won't be our best player but he could end up being our most important player by the end of the year.

* How about Nick Richards tonight? He's not a world beater but he was solid. Also, I hope he continues to foul out of every single game this year.

* I feel like Kahlil Whitney needs a break out game so announcers can start telling everyone that his nickname is The Dragon. We've needed a guy named The Dragon for a while now, imo.

Montgomery actually only played 14 minutes.
Good catch, I'm honestly shocked to hear that. Felt like he was out there for the first 10 minutes of the game non-stop while everyone else rotated in and out. He's still gotta be able to do better than 2 boards. He doesn't bring anything else to the table, he's gotta be a force on the boards or he just has no business on the court. And he just needs to shelve that garbage baseline shot.

- Was odd to see Cal let the hot guard take over and even bring the ball up with Hagans sliding over to a wing.

I love the interchangeable guards, and every night could be a different one getting theirs with the others seemingly ok with it. No selfish kids here.

I’d definitely say that’s John Wall debut-esque.(game winner)

- EJ was a bit lost, but I think it was more about guarding the white boy they were using to space the floor for Tillman. At least I hope so.

- Richards seemed to block shots with ease. A few weren’t recorded stats as at least one was after a shot clock buzzer, but it was man vs kids style too. Control that paint with the way these guards can press and watch TF out!

- I predicted Cats by 6, but didn’t believe as I saw this being Winston’s big coming out party to a Naismith award campaign. Just felt setup for the kid, and even though he did his thing to a degree, our boys did well on him.

- UL and Florida looked good tonight, not too happy about that.

- Got a big few days upcoming here. I really need time to unwind and just sit back to watch my kids blow bubbles.

Happy hump day GYERO

Gottdamn what a night. Having the staff watch the results and the UK game in the Highlands was both hilarious and intense.

Hipsters booing results all night...UL crowd booing UK all night. One of my employees was wearing a UK shirt with a "don't tread on me" flag draped around him. Overkill and tasteless, but brought a lot of hilarity for someone that gets to leave in a few days.

6 months ago Tommy was working for a mid-sized city council candidate arguing with people on Facebook. Yesterday his candidate was on stage with Donald Trump and became one of the youngest state wide officials in the country.

Quite a step up.

Pro bono for a friend of mine.

Wayne ate a fast food sandwich today? Congrats, that’s amazing.

A 1,500 word essay doesn’t do that experience justice. Please tell us more.

He did say that all African Americans looked like Andre 3000, except Killer Mike behind the counter.

He also acts like he was in the ghetto, I'm sure it was in a suburb of Houston, not like UGKs stomping ground. He was looking for J Prince and Willie D
