ESPN’s top NFL reporter Adam Schefter had no other options but to respond after getting roped into the growing controversy around the Washington Football Team’s emails. An email exchange between Schefter and former Washington Football Team president Bruce Allen was published by the Los Angeles Times that exposed him committing a cardinal sin in journalism.
Schefter sent Allen an entire draft of a story to be published, referred to him as “Mr. Editor,” and welcomed him to propose any changes:

Adam Schefter isn't a journalist, he's an influence peddler. There's a difference.

Likely, but one of the charges against Gruden was some anti-gay comments. He had one of the only openly gay NFL players on his team (Carl Nassib)

That died with Tim Russert in 2008. It’s now all about getting clicks on ads, selling ads, and peeling off an audience and feeding them what they want so you can get more clicks and sell more ads.

Some of your national reporters are definitely not legit reporters. Just the facts ended so long ago it is nuts. Almost nothing is presented without slant except the obituaries.

I’ve done probably close to a dozen actual newspaper/news media interviews and I stopped doing them because they butchered what I said into whatever message they wanted. It’s all about whatever slant the reporter wants.

I’ve done the “fluff” pieces too where they actually send it to you before print to make sure they got it right.

If you say so, I believe you. Certainly was not my experience when I did an interviews with a national newspaper and NPR.

Follow the money. ESPN isn't going to bite the hand that feeds them. Yeah they will report some negativity to give off some semblance of fairness, but that's about it.

It's no different in political reporting.

This isn't all about Gruden, Bruce Allen, racism, homophobia, or misogyny exactly. This is about power and who has it in the NFL itself. Sure, there are a bunch of folks who honesty want to help stop that kind of thinking and talking but that's really not why they are pushing. They want more leverage over the owners in the NFL.

The one thing to realize...
John Gruden wasn't sending those emails to strangers. The people who were receiving those emails were comfortable with the language he was using and friendly with him. There is obviously a culture of racism in the high levels of the NFL, but I could of told you that after they let Rush Limbaugh commentate. Having said that, what else would expect from a bunch of old white billionaires...not demographic known for their progressive view points.

This Schefter thing is just a reflection of how "journalism" works these days. Sure CNN, Fox News, ESPN release a story, but you're damn sure the "stories" are "edited" so as not to harm any corporate or controlling interests. You get a story, but they are all biased because anything that is critical of the controlling interests either isn't published or is published in a favorable light. They try to create to illusion of balanced journalism, but in a very narrow and contrived scope.
