This year has seen Greg Schiano’s best coaching job yet. With a talent depleted roster, and new players all over the place, we summoned up the will to play competitively with the #12 team in the country, who looks headed towards the Top 5 if they can beat Oregon. We played competitively with a roster that was worth $20M more, with a group that included Div 2 and Div Iaa kids. The difference in the game was a pick6 thrown by a QB that is still developing, which is why we landed him from the bargain bin. His counterpart at USC is worth roughly $2.5M. Indianas Josh Hoover makes $4M. Had we paid up for a QB, we’d be 3-0, but we didn’t have budget, since we had so many needs.
The new kids improved exponentially from Game 2 to Game 3. That’s what you call coaching. We had #4 on an island, and he did get beat at times, but I thought he played particularly well especially when you consider the tremendous athletes he was going up against. Had we paid Bo Mascoe the $1M+ he was seeking, this games end result might have been different. Kaj Sanders significantly bolstered our defense, and is playing the best football of his career. His instincts and athleticism were dearly missed.
The kids on defense played their hearts out, even though they got lit up like Roman candles at times. Safeties and DBs made a bulk of the tackles, and LBs were much improved. Defensive Line did not get the pressure we were hoping for, but did their best. Overall, I thought the defense played well enough to win, considering their constraints.
Our offense lit up USCs defense at times. Antwan Raymond showed excellent vision to elude USCs defenders. Korey Duff dog walked the USC defender many times. Ben Black finally made the impact we were waiting for. The new kids, Jourdin Houston, Elias Coke, and Vernon Allen all made nice contributions. Overall, I thought our WR group was equivalent to USCs.

A revelation on the offensive line was playing Chris Vigna at Left Tackle and Moving Tyler Needham to Left Guard. Vina did very well from what I could see, as did Needham. Their double team sprung Antwan Raymond on his nice run. #11 Logan Blake had a really nice day blocking, and he was able to get to the 2nd level at times, to eliminate defenders. He had a really nice block on Raymond’s big run. I also thought #74 Giwa was particularly solid. The line had its best performance of the year. USCs Luke Wafle, #94, had very little impact on the game, aside from a few tackles.
This sites writers predicted scores ranging from roughly 45-14 to 55-10. Final Score was 42-35, much better than expectations. The team is getting better every game, as the kids are getting better every game. USC is likely the most talented team on the schedule while Indiana is the best coached. We match up much better with Indiana from a talent perspective, so I’m looking forward to that game, even if the result is likely adverse. Nevertheless, ever remaining game after Indiana is winnable. Can’t wait to see what the season holds.
