Here is my take. I believe that a deal has been worked out, and Greg knows he will be gone after the last game. Both sides have worked it out and agreed to keep it quiet for now.

That would help with giving Zinn the ability to start back channel discussions without worrying about "leaks".

The problem with keeping Schiano for the season is that it could (will?) come out she is inquiring into candidates like Kelly or Eck or anyone else. And then it's a whole other fiasco about denials and distractions.

Makes zero sense on so many levels. Do you really think GS agreed to take a pay out? He's managing this season. Will be graded at the end. We are not bowl bound so can hire at will post season before the bowls.

Lol he got an F for the year as far as being graded at the end. Guy is not going 5-2 in his last 7 games to save his hide.

The path to 5-2:

1. Beat Maryland- win probability- greater than 50%
2. Northwestern-probable loss
3. Michigan- probable upset win as long as al does not put them on upset alert!
4. Wisconsin- 50/50 chance of winning, call this a loss 2-2
5. Nebraska- Rutgers wins this one 3-2
6. Penn State- 50/50 chance of winning-call this a win 4-2
7. Michigan State- Rutgers wins 5-2

We are NOT beating Northwestern, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan or Penn State. I don’t even like the fact that we’re off this week before playing Maryland. I wish we were playing them as early as Thursday.

Maybe. But remember, as much as fans want him out immediately based on the 1-4 start, shelling out that money in 2026 was the last thing Zinn wanted. The NJ.com article spells it out very clearly. The number would go down significantly after next season when factoring in assistants, etc. For this reason - it seems possible that he was told a couple weeks ago that he’s gone if he fails to get to 6-6 (or whatever record Kelly feels would be respectable enough to postpone it another year). Unfortunately, it’s getting less and less likely each game that he could attain whatever that number could be. So maybe then, she decides to just pull the plug early.

I guess my point is - folks are losing site of the fact that as unlikely as it may be, she probably has been rooting for him to salvage the terrible start. We really don’t have this money to spend and it will absolutely set us back further financially. She’s in a bad situation for sure.

Maryland and Sparty we can win, the rest of the games I'm writing in L's in Sharpie. 3-9 at best and Schiano sent to Shady Acres Retirement Home.

IMHO his recent pressors, both post game and during the week, Greg has both looked and sounded like someone who knows it’s over.
I totally agree with this. He knows no one is buying what he is selling anymore.

He knows its out of his hands at this point, barring some miracle that includes a bowl berth *and* beating Penn State, which is not happening. The defense has been fundamentally broken for over 3 years and can be easily exploited by any OC with half a brain.

If you watch his body language and repetition of phrases and self-contradiction, post-Indiana, I agree:

"I’ve been doing this a long time. I know how to do it, but I’ve got to go do it. I can’t talk about it, I’ve got to do it."
(NOTE-WHAT IS IT?)

It’s a good question, right? If I knew it, it wouldn’t have happened.

There are so many things to look at when you ask that question. Some of it is comeuppance and some of it is comedownance, right? It’s a whole mixture of things.
This is 2026. It’s not 2025. Who knows? We’ll play. But I know what we have. We have six games, and we’ve got one after two weeks.
So that’s the only thing I’m going to focus on. Get some sleep tonight, get up tomorrow and work on the things that I said
. (NOTE-he did not say the things!)

Why do I think that? Because I’ve done it for a long time, and I know the people downstairs in that locker room and the people in the coaches’ locker room.
They’re quality men. They’re quality coaches. They’re quality players. And I believe in myself. I’ve done this a long time
.

It’s like anything. Why do you believe anything? Because I do. That’s a choice, right? Belief in something is a choice.

But there are a lot of reasons we are where we are. I know what we’ve got to do.

If he salvages 5-2 out of this, I will wonder WTF happened in the first 2 games. 4 of these teams have QBs that can run, which guarantees losses unless either the requisite amount of violence is brought forth or the light bulb comes on for the defensive coaches. This stretch has the look of a walrus swimming into a boat motor.

Last year or last week? Because the last couple weeks I have never seen him look or sound like this. Ever.
Last year. He looked beat up many times. Brought up a couple of times in the in game threads. How he wasn’t interacting and aloof on the sidelines. Agreed this year he doesn’t have an answer and knows he’s not getting it done. He can’t get away with his typical mantras anymore
We’re young
We’re beat up
We’ll get it figured out
It’s my job to coach them up. Etc…

They’re all stale and hollow at this point

BTW - I don’t think we keep it anywhere close against Northwestern, Nebraska and Wisconsin. Michigan probably figures things out by then. - which means using their quarterbacks legs more - and Penn State, well, Greg figures out a way to lose that game in the second half is my best guess.

Ugh.

Someone keeps coming into my work area and posting from my computer! Guy had a nametag-Al? 😜

In seriousness, if the planets align, nothing goes wrong for Rutgers, and Greg does not make any boneheaded decisions, I could see them eeking out 3 or 4 wins. 5 is a stretch for sure. But the eternal optimist in me is still flickering.

Michigan has so much more talent than Rutgers. That is a definite loss. Similarly, Northwestern, Penn State, Nebraska, Wisconsin are losses because of the disparity of talent. Maryland and Michigan State will be fighting for their lives. So It is highly probable that this will be a 1-11 season. Schiano, the con man, will retire as a millionaire, while the program will continue to struggle unless there is a home run hire. Sad state of affairs.

LOL. We could not beat UMASS and BC. No chance we will win any games except for maybe Maryland.
The team was horribly unprepared for the first two games, or the team is bipolar. The team was fairly functional against USC. If THAT team can show up for 3 or 4 games on the schedule, namely, Maryland, Michigan State and perhaps Nebraska, Penn State and a demoralized Michigan, they have a puncher's chance in that order. No, not all of them, but 3 or 4 of them.

Said it in another thread (I think) but there is a nuclear option. The dept. is under no obligation to fund the football team to the maximum level it can. Keli informs Greg that she doesn't believe in him moving forward based on performance and is slashing his rev share/NIL directing it elsewhere. This will force transfers and inability to bring in close to quality players, fast tracking what we all know is the destination.

Or, they can negotiate a settlement that is amenable to both him and the university saving him more disgrace, along with the university money, thus allowing the program to move forward in a responsible way.

It's a hardball move, but Greg has put himself in this position. Simply put, he blew it. He's not even competing at this point.

We are totally going to somehow beat PSU and then certain fans will say "Doesnt matter we went 3-9. We beat PSU. That's all the matters. The season wasnt a disaster and Schiano earned another season."

In the last 7 years, Schiano hasn’t been able to win a single punchers chance game. It is not going to suddenly start happening, certainly not with this team.

That’s interesting. Maybe it will come to that.
But then don’t we theoretically also lose revenue when nobody comes to watch the games if he plays hard ball?

As I said before, she’s in a tough situation. That’s why I said as much as everyone wants him gone even at this point I still think for her it’d be way easier if he pulled a miracle and rattled off a bunch of unlikely wins. No way of knowing but it seems as if she’s maybe waiting to pull the plug until the point when the chance of this happening finally hits zero (7th loss?). Maybe she figures a couple more weeks isn’t hurting that much so maybe it’s worth seeing if somehow the bleeding can stop.

Anyone thinking Greg will accept less than a 100% of his buyout money might just be fooling themselves.
Schiano's chances of getting a College HC position is nil.
As for a high paying DC spot, I doubt he's considered a good candidate anymore since his RU D has stunk for awhile and his last year as the Buckeyes DC was underwhelming.

He milked the Tampa buyout until he landed the OSU co DC with one year left in buyout and he probably knew that if he didn't find a good position before the money dried up, he might not find anything like what Urban was offering .
Greg Schiano won't commit to taking less than 100% unless he knows a good paying position is waiting out there for him

I can't see any P-4 program willing to pay the bucks and commit to the years he wants for Schiano top take one cent less than he's owed.
The only way he'd take less in a one time payout for more than half of what he's owed , so he doesn't have to get paid bi weekly unril the contract was due to expire.

But the best reason he won't accept less is Schiano's buyout dies not not required him to pursue other employment. .
Greg's contract includes a mitigation clause where the buyout is offset by any football coaching contract he signs in the future.
So he has more incentive to stay out of the coaching ranks then he does to coach while collecting RU buyout money.

If he plays hardball play hardball back. Gut his support. Get rid of the army he’s been gifted. Dont renew other coaches whose contracts are expiring and cut his NIL and rev share to the point he can barely field a team. Force him to continue losing. Only bigger. One year of that will more than pay for his buyout. Or be what he’s long purported himself to be. An honorable man.

Is this suppose to imply that donors like Brown and Towers still want to keep GS and he won’t be let go even with a poor record?
