Greg 2.0 never recovered from the timeout disaster vs Illinois

Every failed relationship, business or coaching tenure has a defining moment when you know it's not going to work anymore even if it doesn't end immediately then.

Ash had the 80-7 beat down to Michigan year 1 when the fan base knew this guy wasn't up for it. He never recovered.

For Greg 2.0, his defining moment was the botched timeout and loss to Illinois. I think at that point the fan base turned on Greg for good and all the concerns about him being a bad game day coach were confirmed. There is just no coming back from such a bad moment. It was really just a matter of time before the end would come.

I like Greg and appreciate what he did in his first tenure but I can't help but wonder what would have been different had he not made one of the worst calls of all time that day. The '24 season would have been a huge success and he likely would have had a lot more goodwill with fanbase.

Yeah the Illinois game is the reason! 😆 not the 💩ton of dumbass decisions he’s classically known for, or his recalcitrant nature or his inability to adapt…nope it’s the freakin Illinois game

When he went to Tampa Bay. Was obvious right away he was in over his head. Never recovered, his ego is bigger than his abilities. 1.0 was good on a Rutgers scale in the Big East.

Making the D dive at people legs on the last snaps of the game was a joke. Just ridiculous.
Is he responsible for fixing our program and bringing us into modern day college football? Yes. Did he outkick his coverage for a career? Yes. Amazing that he got an NFL job looking back on it now

The road of head coaching jobs have often been filled with really unsuccessful people. Schiano has just been able to milk it longer than the other career losers. I blame the people that did the sit in on round 2. They must feel incredibly stupid at this point. I can't imagine going to the mat for a career loser. Especially one who had the Tennessee albatross around his neck. We honestly are getting what we deserve after that.

2010 was season from hell for Schiano 1.0. He lost Savage and EL drained him hard. A number of players wanted to quit but finished out a zombie season with all loses after Army. In 2008 the media staged a post camp ambush that took Mulcahy out and saw McCormick distance himself. The gridiron triangle of coach, AD and president was broken. Greg was alienated by all that and the magic was on borrowed time. The 2010 soul suck was followed by Penn St scandal in Nov of 2011. Media tried dragging GS into that and he announced his leaving in Jan 2012. The NFL and adult play no doubt looked better than the college scene going on 2 years of toxic drama. GS also gets too burned out playing the father figure with guys.

I never liked quotes like this from Schiano

“One of the things that thrills me about the vertical alignment at Rutgers now is I get to spend more time doing the thing that I love to do, and that’s investing in the players’ lives,”

No - teach them how to score in red zone and leave the Boys Town thing alone

Just a minor point: Ash’s Michigan beatdown was 78-0. The 80-7 wipeout was a Schiano special, I think in year two, to WVU. It was understandable at the time, and he obviously recovered before peaking in 2006 and then descending thereafter.

The decision not to pay up for a good quarterback is more impactful. We would be 2-0. Heck, we’d even be 2-0 with a Wimsatt type quarterback. He might have struggled to throw, but he didn’t turn the ball over.

Thats on the coach, who is Schiano!!! He paid for a guy who was struggling at BC, his player evaluation has vanished for some reason. Wimsatt SUCKED! We would still be 0-2 with him, WTF are you talking about?

The bad QB play is because of bad coaching. If they "paid up" for a different QB, the results would have been the same.

AK was excellent because he had been coached by KC before. There was a previous relationship. KCs results with QBs at RU that he didn't previously coach were not so good.

He was good because he had a Coach Flats OL that could block and one of the best WR corps RU ever had. Give him Dremel instead of Duff at #1. KC is a rock around RU's offense because Schiano likes him that way.

Yup - to this day he can’t let go of that Heisman candidate who couldn’t even hold down the QB1 position at Jax St.

Surely Gavin would’ve won us the first 2 games with his legs even though he showed little to no scramble ability while at Rutgers or really anywhere he went. His running ability was confined to design plays, which requires above average blocking schemes which we definitely don’t have. The significance of Kyle’s blocking ability vastly underrated by our fan base for sure.

That would have to be the most embarrassing call of all time. Greg is an expert in grabbing defeat out of the jaws of victory.
There was another one in the 80-7 WVU game that was pretty bad. I don't recall the sequence exactly but they were up big and were going to punt. GS decides to call a timeout for some reason. Im sure they were like "wtf?" called off the punt, and scored a 50 yard TD or something.

Someone fact check me on the exact details.

But we were told it was his decision to sit on the sidelines after he got dismissed from Tampa. We were told it was a good thing that he took the co-dc job at OSU. I don’t know many people to choose to sit out in the prime earning years of their life. I don’t many people with viable options that choose to drop down 2-3 levels in a career to become a co-dc after sitting out 3 seasons of coaching. I don’t know many people to sit out 2 years, after being released from OSU, once again biding their time to wait for the “dumpster fire “ of an opportunity to coach at Rutgers. Said it then and I’ll say it again. This man had no other options. Not coaching was not his choice. There were no takers.

None of it matters today. He needs to go yesterday. It’s over. Stop the madness. Schiano has to be done at Rutgers. Goodbye forever.

Talent evaluation matters the most, which GS has historically been terrible at with QBs. Facts are AK came running to KC because he got passed over at Minnesota. It worked out for Rutgers and Athan. Win-win.
It really is true that our QB room under 17 yrs of GS at the helm have been way below standard. It's been a big problem and even when he has talent they are often mismanaged. There always seemed to be a QB controversy nearly ever year. Under 2.0, AK's 2 years were the only good play particularly his 2nd year here.

WVU lined up to punt and Schiano “schemed” LOL to block it with no returner deep or cover of the WVU punt team wideout. Seeing this, the punter tossed an easy pass to the uncovered player who scored even more easily than the BC receiver did last week.

Shelby doesn’t remember if Schiano called a TO before this ingenious tactic, but if 25 years of lousy coaching suggests anything, he probably did.

Think this might be referring to a play from the 2003 game, which was significantly more competitive - they hit us for an 83-yard TD right at the end of the 1st half when it was still a one-score game. According to Rutgers' own recap, "West Virginia appeared to catch Rutgers off guard." That 2003 season was a big improvement overall, but an inexcusable breakdown prevented a chance at it being a bigger step up. Not a bad microcosm of the whole GS experience.

Good post. I'd argue hiring a coordinator that you've fired before is also a pretty good sign you stink. How bad must it be when no one decent wants a multi-year commitment for a 7 figure job?

Ah yes that's it! I mixed up the details but remembered the incompetency.

Schiano’s tendencies and conservative style has bothered me the past few years.

But the two defining moments when I knew any (dumb) hope I had for this guy to get us to 8 + wins vanished was definitely the Illinois debacle and also the rehiring of Robb Smith.

I don’t know if that play has any causation with respect to our current situation

i mean had he recruited much better players, won a lot more games etc etc in the mean time you never would have made this post

however that play is certainly very emblematic of our current situation with GS

Which Illinois debacle ? The one where he gave up a big lead in the famous Leonard Leap game and then won the OT toss and chose to get the ball first ? That Illinois debacle ?

That whole season was the beginning of the end. But what made that play worse, was his post game comments. I expected him to come up talking about how it was his fault, he made the call but really should have allowed the kick giving the context. Not get on his knees begging for forgiveness but maybe a little bit apologetic. Instead he was just nope, you make the call, that's it, not going to second guess it then went into some bizzare coach speak to defend it.

At that point we should all have been like, hmm..., maybe Schiano has lost it and is no longer up to the challenge. Look, as someone getting older, get it, things change, time marches on and it impacts you. Clearly it has impacted Schiano.

Of course he didn’t. He was tainted goods especially after the Tennessee fiasco. Out fanbase is silly. They did a sit in for a coach that literally no other school was even considering. Embarrassing for them. Some even pretend to be football experts lol
