Greatest SEC Tournament Game Ever?

The only SECT game I’ve attended in person. It was a blast. My dad and I bought tix before UK even won the semi-final game, which was nerve wracking lol.

I know some hate on the SECT, but when UK is rolling it’s some true BBN magic there.

My father and I were at the SEC tournament game in 1995. Like many of you, a love for Kentucky basketball was passed on to me from my father. He passed away in 2013, but I still think often of that SEC tournament game against Arkansas. At 61 years of age... that father/son time that we shared will NEVER be forgotten.

Memories of that game
The crowd as around 30,000 and Arkansas was WELL represented
We trailed the whole game.... Including OT
When RR got fouled at the end of regulation... most of the Arkansas fans around me got up and were headed to the exits but came back in after the FT disaster.
When my father and I left the Georgia Dome, it has felt like we had been in a 15-round heavyweight title fight. We lost the first 14 rounds but hung in there and knocked out the defending champion in round 15.

Tomorrow is the anniversary of that game. March 12, 1993. “The Reckoning”.

If memory serves, Pitino showed film from that game to Ron Mercer and said if you go to TN or Vandy, this is what we will do to you

Obviously, way more to the recruiting pitch flthan just that but that detail was leaked at some point

1984 SECT was special - my first ever UK games as well


The title win featured the amazing shot / moment where Kenny Walker's buzzer beater over Charles Barkley gave us the win AND made Charles cry

BUT the first round blowout of Georgia was an amazing introduction to seeing UK live

And my favorite player on that team was Melvin Turpin - he went for 42 pts & 16 rebounds that night

Since the Cats play Alabama today. The 1992 SEC Championship game that was Pitino's first SEC championship 80-54 over Alabama. Kentucky had a huge run in that game like 30-0 late in the first half to blow the game wide open. Kentucky was shooting a free throw and Pitino told the official to tell Wimp Sanderson to sit down his suit was so ugly it was distracting our players. Wimp always wore plaid suits for those too young to know. Caywood heard it and remarked about it right away on the radio. It was awesome!!!

You are lucky to have been there in person. I can't remember if I saw this game on TV or saw it through Cawood's radio call. So many games I think I remember watching on TV or by Cawood's so vivid radio call it seems like I was able to see it as if it was TV. I'm pretty positive I listened to this game on the radio while in college in MO and had to get in my car and move around town to keep getting the 84WHAS radio signal.

There was a Bama-UK Title game around 1980-1981 (?) or so that always popped up as the greatest SEC basketball game ever for years -

UK won something like 101-100 & by all accounts it wasn't sloppy defense fm either team - just brilliant execution all night fm both teams

I didn't see that one but I wish I had

Will look it up later to see who our big scorers were (would assume Kyle Macey, Sam Bowie, Derrick Hord & Mevin Turpin maybe ?)

I remember those Converse basketball shoes. I had a pair my freshman year of high school, sold a Holstein bull calf to buy them. They were the the Cadillac of basketball shoes that year. I gave $53 for them, a BIG price for a pair of shoes in '82.

I see some good looking UK early 90s gear at work too - windbreakers etc

I guess there's no real way to have a noticeable throw back uni for the 80s Hall teams is there? They were simple - block letter jerseys - maybe darker blue?

Seems like Tubby had a team wear 1978 Championship series uniforms once - road blue?

The shorts are being worn higher again so nows the perfect time to use gear fm that era
