It's a great series of course, and I have enjoyed it all, but I told my son tonight that there has been so much anticipation that the finale may not live up to everyone's expectations.

Yeah, it’s gonna be impossible to please everyone, especially with a cast this big and so many popular characters.

Thought it was a good setup episode. The two scenes involving Sam were the highlight to me. I expect the next five weeks to be much more intense.

The show is still great but the highest points were in seasons 1-4 when it was more character driven and gave everything time to breathe. Seasons 5-7 were more cinematic and moved at a faster pace and I think that’s caused it to be a little up and down at times. Season 8 will likely be like recent seasons, the high points will be fantastic (Hardhome, Battle of the Bastards, Winds of Winter, Spoils of War) but you’ll also have an episode or two that feels a little unfulfilling like parts of seasons 5-7 were.

The dragon joy ride was a little cheesy. But I’m sure they will deliver some solid twists to close it out.

Underwhelming for a 2 year wait. Sansa has turned into a 17ing Jedi Master. Jon is acting stupid again. And generally just a lot of, “Hey, what are YOU doing here?” scenes. The scene with the Umber kid at the end... Was I supposed to care about him? Was the symbol significant in some way? Also, no way in hell Bron offs his two BFFs, right?

I'm liking the move to force all these people with various past conflicts and history in one place at the same time. That's been the highlight for me. All these secrets and twists that will slowly leak will be interesting. Banging my aunt probably doesn't make the list of things I want leaked out.

Very disappointed. No major character got offed in the first episode. GRRM needs to get to killing some folks. There's 10 or so major characters that need to go before the final episode.*** I'm not really disappointed. I figured this would be a catchup/setup type episode but I agree that it will be hard to live up to everyone's expectations for this season.

I was watching some of the reruns leading up to tonight's episode and I had forgotten just how good of an actor most of these folks are. Watching Sam's reaction to hearing about his father and brother (I forgot he was a Tarly) just reinforced that. I think he's gonna be a Dany-hater along with Sansa and possibly do something stupid to affect the outcome.

You have to put everything in place before the action starts. Episode 3 is the battle episode so you’ve got to make it through another “boring” one.

I was glad they got most of the setup done quickly in this one episode. In years past it would have taken 2 or 3 episodes to get that many loose ends tied up. Hell telling Jon who he really is could have taken the whole season.

I think Cersi will use Bron to take out Euron Greyjoy. He fulfilled his purpose by bringing the army to her. Theon’s scene was pretty badass. So many characters have the potential for redemption. I’d imagine as each makes it right with the world they will get off’d immediately following.

Seems like Cersei decided as she was walking away that banging Euron would let her claim that he is the father of her baby. Now she can take out the only two people who know she’s preggo with an incest baby (her brothers)?

My only complaint is that it should have been a 2-hr premiere. I’ve got no issue with all of the set up. After all, we’re about to witness one of the most epic battles to ever take place on tv.

However, knowing that they had a mountain of set ups and teasers to get planted, why not take your time and give the fans a 2-hr start?

I love hearing people trying to pick holes in plot lines of a show that involves dragons and zombies. There are no rules. Accept it.

Honestly, there was only one WTF moment for me last night...did Jaime dye his hair?

And lots of incest. It's essentially a televised version of the dreams of an Alabama trailer park teen.

I don't know. The Sam scenes threw me a little. Does he really care that much that his dickhead dad and brother got barbecued? They were awful to him. And he just brushes off that Jon also executed people. I get that he would be more loyal to Jon, but to cast that much doubt on Dany after meeting her for 2 minutes seemed off. Obviously, the only "happy" ending to this series would be Jon and Dany ruling together, but this is GOT and that's just not going to happen is it? And is everyone just supposed to take Sam and Bran's word for it that Jon is actually Aegon? Sam has a random maester's journal that doesnt even mention the child and Bran has, well whatever Bran has. The Lannisters sure won't accept it, the northerners just want him to stay and be king in the north. Hard to see how that plays out.

Apparently the major battle happens in Episode 3. Guess they will have 3 more episodes to sort all that out when it is done - and there might not be many people left at that point.

Howland Reed, Meera and Jojen's father, can back up the story. He is known as an honorable man and he was at the Tower of Joy with Ned Stark when Jon was born.

Agreed on Sam. When he left House Tarly for the Citadel, it was pretty clear that he was done with them (as he should have been). Something big will happen with that sword he stole though - he mentioned it last night.

As for others accepting Jon as Aegon, I think that'll have to come from either (1) his riding the dragon, or (2) him surviving a fire. I'm thinking the latter, and it may happen in his battle with the Night King.

Last night was 54 minutes.
Ep. 2: 58 min
Ep. 3. 1 hour 22 minutes; going to be epic
Ep. 4. 1 hour, 18 min
Ep. 5. 1 hour, 20 min
Ep. 6. 1 hour 20 min

So the last 4 episodes are going to be like 4 movies. Last night had to happen to set the board, but I still really enjoyed it.

Raises all those dead Starks (including Ned, Rickon & Jon's Mom Lyanna) to join his army of the dead it's going to be lit. Not exactly wise to stage your defense on top of a huge crypt when your enemy can raise the dead.

They've already established Jon is not immune to heat/fire when he burned his hands on the lantern saving Mormont from the wight in season 1.

It's going to play out with a hand wave or two from the writers so they can get back to the next OMYGODTHATSSOBADASS set piece.

I've thought about this too
You would think that Snow would know to burn all bodies as much as he has been involved with the Night king

I wondered if anyone else noticed the crypt being added to the intro. Something big is coming out of there in Ep 3.

Yep, I've got little doubt that this is exactly what is going to be the undoing of Winterfell. Pretty sure that there was even a quote last night at some point about the armies being in need of a place to retreat to(the Iron Islands), and I've got a feeling that this is going to be a big reason as to why they're going to need to retreat.

The two things I keep wondering are...

1) Who's gonna kill Sam when he tries to spill the beans about Jon's lineage (Daenerys or Jon himself)? My money's on Jon in order to keep everything a secret
2) How and when is Cersei gonna 17 the entire 7 kingdoms? My suspicion is that she's going to somehow conspire with Euron to block a retreat to the Iron Islands, and there will be massive casualties.

The deal with Sam was a bit odd since it didn't seem that he should have cared all that much, but I think it was likely nothing more than the episode's attempt to establish every possible angle that might lead towards a betrayal against Daenerys. In other words, somebody's gonna turn on her, but they don't want us having any idea as to who it might be

I thought for a half a second Jon was going to kill Sam right there in the crypt after he realized what it all meant.

I think the sword was just a device to make Dany realize who Sam’s family was.

After watching the Inside the Episode, the writers intended for Sam to be really set off when his brother was mentioned. Which he was, it was just subtle. That makes more sense. His brother wasn’t as big of a Dick (pun intended) as his father was.

My only other big problem was the dragon riding scene. Not one person, including Jon, Dany, Tyrion or Viserys is going to stop and say “holy ****, the dragon is actually letting him ride it - I thought only Targaeryans could do this!” Pretty much everyone knows this as fact, including Dany - and not a hint of realization from her. Instead it’s just used so Jon can take her to his secret smash pad. The writers in the Inside the Episode clearly meant for this to be the effect - but it fell woefully short - probably because they wanted the Sam scene to be the moment - but that ship sailed when he was piloting the dragon like Maverick after 2 minutes.

I don't know why they didn't do the Sam reveal scene first and the dragon riding after. But on the show, they have never explicitly said that only Targs can ride dragons. In the books, it was the Valyrians, some Targs and a few other "brave men".

Zero chance Jon kills Sam.

I wouldn't ordinarily think so, either. And I'm not saying he still might (because I honestly don't think he will either), but this is a show that has built its reputation in part by subverting what you'd usually expect to see.

The spiral/circle symbol has been running throughout the series.

In the very first episode, during the cold open, we see wildling body parts arranged in a circular pattern created by the whitewalkers.

In Season 3 Manse and Jon stumble upon a spiral made of horse parts and manse says “always the artists”, referencing the walkers.

Season 6, Bran “looks” into the past before Hodor’s death scene, we see the Children creating the first whitewalker under the Weirwood tree. The arial view of the tree shows its surrounded by stones in the spiral pattern.

Season 7 when Jon and Dany are in the caves, the drawings of the Children on the walls show lots of symbols and shapes, including whitewalkers and the circle/spiral again.

I’m sure there are more. I googled these since I’m not always 100% sure what the hell’s going on in that show, but hope this helps.
