Good article, that gave us more details on Nick's ankle injury and recovery than I've seen elsewhere. I was wondering how an ankle could dislocate like that without breaking any bones, and it turns out there were some breaks.

I don't know, but all those details left me a little more concerned about Nick's recovery than I have been. While they say he could have played in the Spring game, it's clear he isn't yet 100%.

A lot has happened since that night, when 348 seconds into his team’s duel with Ole Miss, one Rebel (linebacker DeMarquis Gates) went low, another (end Breeland Speaks) went high and Fitzgerald’s right foot stayed planted in the Scott Field turf, crushed beneath his 230 pounds. Evidence of the ghastly injury is available in dozens of places on YouTube.

Read between the lines and SI is calling it a dirty play.

I thought it was about a 15min players meeting, so not sure if Fitz said it in jest that he "walked in, said he was leaving, and walked out." I think Fitz is salty about the way Mullen left/lied and didn't want to paint him in a positive light in the media.

I wouldn't be too worried. I saw Nick at Hobie's last night with a buddy. He was walking around, playing pool, playing darts. No limp, no nothing. He's gonna be ready.

From what I heard the players were all pretty pissed off and once he started talking they just got madder and he ended up leaving pretty quickly. I think the players told him to get the hell out. Not sure if accurate though.

I can't dispute what Mullen did for State and the football program, but what a piece of ****.

“There were so many rumors every year,” Fitzgerald says of Mullen. “He told our team, ‘I’m not going anywhere.’” The Sunday after the loss to Ole Miss, Mullen met briefly with players. “He came in and said, ‘I’m leaving,’ and he walked out of the room.”

Great article. Dellegner is 2 for 2 when writing about State since joining Sports Illustrated.

In the spring game, he was running around a bit but was also limping. He'll probably be OK but in the back of my mind I'm wondering if he'll be a bit concerned about re-injury. I certainly would be.

Yep. He did not exit gracefully. Had he been upfront, most would have been wishing him good luck.

Jamal Peters posted a live video from inside the meeting on one of his social media pages. When Mullen walked out and started talking he cut it off. He went back live less than two minutes later and players were discussing Mullen leaving. Mullen addressing the team didn’t take more than 3 minutes tops.

Several players stated for weeks he would bring up the fact that he wasn’t going anywhere and wouldn’t leave them. I think most players have a lot of resentment for the way he lied to them.

Talked to a current player during the spring and he said for the most part the team was ecstatic that Mullin left. No one respected him and definitely didn’t during the Mississippi game. He said the players love the new staff and are excited he’s gone and Hevesy is gone

Steve Robertson reported on all thisna while back...

Yep. He did not exit gracefully. Had he been upfront, most would have been wishing him good luck.

Basically confirming that:
1. Mullen spent most of the week of the Egg Bowl talking with both Tennessee and Florida. Did not attend many meetings or practices.
2. Spent the week leading up to the Egg Bowl telling everyone within earshot he wasn’t going anywhere.
3. The players were very resentful and upset about the way he handled it. The meeting was VERY short and he didn’t give the players hardly any attention or opportunity to ask questions.
4. He did leave a note with Cohen several weeks prior to the Egg bowl saying he would try to make this his last year in Starkville.

All this was on the Boneyard about 6 months ago. No idea what episode... but he did a whole show on how Mullen left. Basically said what everyone here has... Grateful that he put MSU on the map, but a piece of **** for leaving the way he did.

I can definitely see this. Mullen was so distracted by trying to get a bigger gig that he let it interfere with relationships and coaching. The longer he stayed, the worse it got. I think he got entirely too selfish and ended up burning a lot of bridges. Thankfully he had just enough focus to get us to a respectable level, but there's no telling what could have been accomplished had he kept his focus on MSU.

Oh, I completely believe Mullen did that. I think he really disliked Starkville and MSU by the time he left. He had been trying to get our for years and probably became resentful. There needed to be a clean break and a fresh start on both ends. He looked practically giddy at his FL opening press conference. Like had just been freed from a bad relationship and was now free to pursue someonw he had fallen in love with. He was way overpaid, and a lot of fans acted desperate to keep him because they were scared we couldn’t do better. I don’t like that Cohen offered him more money to stay. We had about the same level of success under Jackie Sherrill. I don’t remember completely, but Dan might have been more consistent. I think people were so scared of what happened during the Croom era that they put up with Mullen’s lazy recruiting.

Mullen was never a people person, which is one reason I believe he wasn’t a good recruiter. He acts like he would be uncomfortable developing relationships with recruits. I’m glad our players like the new coaches. The players deserve coaches who give a damn about them.

If you knew the trouble we had to bail Mullen out of constantly while he was

in Starkville it would piss you off. Starkville is the best thing that ever happened to that guy. With that I will say I appreciate what he did for us but it
certainly was returned in spades and he has no reason to have anything but good feelings for how he was treated. He would have been fired in most places.

Screw him. I'm looking forward to this year more than any I can remember in quite some time. I hope the hell we kick FL's *** in Sept.

Man, I’d love to know. I also appreciate what he did, but it doesn’t give him a free pass. We’re not so desperate that we need to pay him 5 million dollars to stay, which is what Cohen put forth if I remember correctly. Really, FL is the big loser because they had to pay him 6 million right? He’s a good coach, but he’s not worth 6 million. In no world has he earned that salary. Like you said, he had no reason not to appreciate us in return. If anyone wants to blame the IB for a bad decision, it would be offering Mullen that much money to stay. Unless he knew Mullen would say no, and Cohen was playing 4D chess to screw over Scott Stricklin.

His son was telling kids at school the week of Thanksgiving (i.e. Egg Bowl week) that he was probably moving to Florida for Christmas

Interesting take on the OM defensive scheme to intentionally break Fitz’s ankle.

When I saw the replay, my thoughts were that was intentional and regardless what is said it want change my mind that getting Fitz out of the game was a top priority for their defense.

Well, no. And frankly, I dont expect him to.

Seriously, I don't think Mullen has ever done anything in his life "gracefully".

But I guess I would expect anyone to be a decent human being towards their players. He won football games here, which is great. But his players helped him do that, too. He did fine by the university, as far as I’m concerned... he didn’t by his players.

He should have been more invested in the final games of the season and I feel he should have invested more time in his players.

It’s a done deal now. I was just reporting what Rosebowl confirmed happened.
