What I don't understand is why Duke feels the need to suddenly have 80% of the starting lineup as one and dones. Look at our bench. Can people honestly say that our bench is where it should be, and with 4 more one and dones coming in shortly, will they develop as they should?
Look, I'm not trying to be a downer on the one and dones, but to me, experience really matters. I don't want to get hyped up over 25 regular season wins. And for those to say we're one of the few teams that can honestly call themselves contenders, we should be. There's 5-7 teams that say that every year. I also get the argument about the talent Duke is getting now versus our lean 05-09 years. My question is, why can't we have talent and experience? I mean, we're Duke right? I thought we were the hot item for the talent. What's wrong with a few 4 stars that can develop. I think we have 2 kids in Delaurier and O'Connell that could be really good. The question though is how much will they contribute. The better these 2 guys are next season, the better Duke will be.
We can laugh and say Villanova has had their problems, and they have, but has any team been more consistent than them in the last 3 years? They may not win it all tonight, Michigan is pretty good, but they're not doing it relying on one and dones. Experienced teams have won it all every year, and the 2 years that the teams had one and done's, both teams had several key guys that had been in their program for several seasons.
What's wrong with blending them with returning guys? That way you're basically not starting over every year. See Kentucky.
We can be all excited over Cam, Tre, RJ, and Zion, and maybe they will be as advertised, but our next team stands no chance unless our forgotten returning guys really improve between now and January 2019. Unless we are more worried about which nba team Cam and Co. will become a hall of famer for.
I agree and have been saying the last several days, ultimately our returning players success and LEADERSHIP has a tremendous impact on our destiny. Javin, Ques, AOC need to be totally embraced by the incoming class and blended to produce the all important chemistry. Jack White is another wildcard in that scenario.
