Gio non-first down and penalty

No, that's not what I said, and talk about reading into a post.

I was talking about Gio "being wrong." This was out of character for him, and he was emotionally invested in this game.

Penalty was deserved. Just saying the guy should not be overly criticized for it.

The call was wrong
the replay (if there really was one) was wrong - from the short time the replay took - I'm pretty sure they only looked to see if/that the ball bounced backwards - which it did...

but, what was totally wrong was the penalty......... Did you see it? it was from the Linesman 35 yards away from Gio........ 35 yards!!! -- - Gio wasn't in his face.. Gio was getting in the huddle for the next play....... what the hell is the linesman staring down Gio for? he should be spotting the damn ball ....

If a linesman can call a foul on any player taking crap within 35 yards - then there would be flags on every damn play......

This wasn't contact with an official -- and no one was taunting or threatening another player in an unsportsmanlike way.... or a sideline offense where the official was standing in his required spot and a coach/player was yelling at him....

Blue acting bigger than the game (as they say in baseball)......

Was it that guy? I thought it was thrown by the ref standing right by the first down marker. Didn't the replay show that? I guess I'll check on Tivo later.

What is interesting is that, in replaying the game recording I have, you can actually hear what Gio said and then a second or two later hear the whistle that came with the flag. Gio yelled/screamed pretty intensely: "That's a first down." He yelled it a second time, a little more intensely: "That's a first down." No flag either time Then he yelled again: "That's a f***in first down." Then came the whistle and the flag. So that's how it happened. If you have a Tivo or DVR recording, you can hear it in the background at the 2:48 to 2:49 recording time into the game.

Could the ref had eaten the whistle? Absolutely. He actually did for the first two yells from Gio. Was it wrong to then throw the flag? Absolutely not. Some refs would, some wouldn't. Players know that, particularly seniors. I don't see any reason to get on Gio about it. He's been a good soldier. But it was a mistake that brought about the risk of getting a flag.

Ash would have called a timeout..that we know for certain.

He would have used a timeout to call a run up the middle that would have been stuffed for a loss after MSU'S DTs ran over the interior of RU's OL and hit the RB in the backfield as soon as he got the handoff.

Chris Carlin apologized on the radio broadcast for the salty language. I may be remembering it wrong, but I thought I heard Ray Lucas say "what did he say wrong" or something like that.

Your freeze frame is wrong anyway.. by the time the forearm hit the ground the ball was out of his hand and bouncing UP.

I don' t think the "famous" video example applies either.. Gio was downing the ball.. clearly.. whereas that guy was trying to use the ball to stay up.

Totally different case.

But whether or not you say it was a fumble.. the ball bounced up and hit out of bounds THEN rolled backwards. If they marked it where the ball hit out of bounds it was a first down.
