I also find it interesting that he’s apparently not utilizing Brown. I mean Howard brought in Martelli, who’s there to help coach. Penny brings in Brown, but apparently he’s not helping him coach. Why? Brown has been “helping recruit”, was at peach jam, traveling on the borrowed recruiting jet, instead of watching film.

Memphis is always so disorganized.

Penny might have to revert to what he did in AAU--go hire Todd Day to actually coach his team.

That's because he can't do what Nike did for him--change his roster up when he was sucking, add players that weren't on his original roster. Also laugh at the AAU hipsters who love to brag about how "in" they are with info and are pumping up these poor decisions for recruits who need to be coached/developed but they love the "buzz" of the Duren/Bates duo at Memphis. Bates looks worse then he did his FR year in HS when he had a great basketball IQ, and every skill he's shown at Memphis has not improved (btw, Penny promised him to be PG--now he's blaming the kids?).

The NBA "whisperer" who takes credit for Devin Booker is on the staff.

They have HOF Larry Brown who has forgotten more basketball than all of us combined, but he's also a very mercurial person who will bail whenever he feels like it.

Throw in Rasheed Wallace who is a high IQ basketball guy and really good person but he's got to be wondering WTF did I get into in working under Mr. One Cent.

Nothing like making empty promises to get players, not addressing your weakness which everyone who follows CBB saw (no PG) and then trashing the players for not taking advantage of the "freedom".
What college did Booker go to again? Where does the coach who learned under Larry Brown coach at again?

This is true. Cincy has some good wins (they also have a head-scratching loss to Monmouth?) and will be pretty good- better than Georgia. Houston looks to be pretty good, also. Wichita St and Central Florida are also better than Georgia. Memphis could have some serious struggles this season, even in a weak conference.
So you're saying another NIT for Penny and the gang?

Banchero isn't a big man and he was in the 21 class. Banchero is very similar to Jason Tatum. I could see him playing sf in the NBA
I guess Banchero's shooting has been inconsistent, which is no surprise at this stage, but I see what you're saying. He shows pretty good mobility, so I could see him potentially playing the SF in the NBA. But I think Banchero is a much better big man prospect, than SF. At the NBA level, with all the wing skill on the court around him and given his size and already pretty good rebounding ability, I would think he makes most any team better by playing the 4-spot, rather than the 3.

Banchero is what the Simmons kid that played for LSU was supposed to be, imo.
Yoshukai, I haven't watched Simmons in the NBA enough to have a good idea about him. I understand (from reading mainly) that Simmons still can't shoot from the perimeter. But otherwise, what are his weaknesses playing the PF spot?

I don’t do Twitter but Calkins is eviscerating Penny.

Yeah Calkins definitely has a point. He's the Jerry Tipton of Memphis sports, by the way. I couldn't read the article so I'm not sure how fair he is being. But I do believe it is true that Penny is as much to blame for the flaws of this highly touted and, by all accounts, very talented, young team. If they are unwilling to share the glory and unwilling to share the ball, the coach has to do something. If they are more about self than team, the coach needs to instill that in them.

#1 This class he brought in was signed with dollar signs in their eyes. That's why they're there. They're all late signings, after NIL was approved. That's why they came- because Memphis went all in, no holds barred, on NIL and used that as a means to get these guys to campus. What do you expect them to do when they get there? Now they've got plenty of cash to "have some fun." If you don't keep them focused as a coach, you've got problems.

#2 How many of these guys were promised a starring role? Penny had returnees on the roster here, some pretty decent players in their own right. They aren't world beaters, but they aren't garbage, either. So, now you've got these freshmen (who may be more hype than substance- we've seen that ourselves many times, I won't mention any names) who walk in expecting a starting spot and x-number of minutes. The veterans hate them and they probably don't even like each other because they want to be the star.

#3 When you decide to handle this publicly it means you've lost control to some degree. It is rare for us to see Calipari OUT the players for poor play. When we have seen it and has handled it publicly (Whitney was one of the few- and most recent), it is a sign that the situation has reached a point of no return. This is just not a good sign at all for Penny. He does bear some responsibility.

Good points and the article basically just says Penny doesn’t have the right to go at the players when he himself isn’t ready for the games. He thinks Penny is the one to blame, after all, he assembled the mess.

still think Duren would be a stud here. Cal can still coach and his offense is a dream for bigs. Duren needs coaching and development. UK would have gave him that.

Oh I agree that Duren would be better off. I just see our numbers with 4-out around Oscar and don't think we'd be having the same success with Duren on the roster. It's why I thought Kofi was a bad addition, though Duren isn't nearly as much of a behemoth in that regard.

Cal would have "made" it work, and we'd be tough inside, we'd just be playing differently and I prefer this system with the roster we have.

Memphis will finish the year awful, some of the team will quit, a coach might even leave, and they’ll turn down the CBI. Penny will announce major changes upcoming, and it’ll be his last con job on n the fans until he’s fired the next season.

Go ahead and save this post somewhere.

I know little about these NIL deals.

I wonder if they are setup to where a kid quits mid season on the team if his funding gets pulled?

Penny is getting kids strictly off his name and NBA time, not because he can coach. As bad as Crean is, he can coach circles around Penny.

Yep...Penny is lucky he's in a bum league or his team would get wrecked nightly.

Well, he might not be so lucky, if they can lose to UGA, they can lose to anyone in their sorry *** league and that would be a death blow to Penny's reputation as a coach.

Ive got pictures of a game at Tulane vs. Memphis where I’m sitting directly, nearly, on top of the cheerleaders for Memphis and I’m guessing there was 1 other person in my section and maybe 100 people scattered around. I sat on the end of the Tulane bench for most of the second half. No one stops me at places like that lol.

Georgia, the worst team in the SEC, & I believe I heard them say during the game that Georgia was playing without their starting point guard, and Memphis still couldn't beat them. And Penny Hardaway says that other coaches are jealous of him. What a laugh, if Memphis is paying this clown any more than the minimum wage they're over paying him.

Give me a call the next time you know you're going to be on top of those cheerleaders again, I want a piece if that action.

Tbh, Bates is straight trash. I imagine he won't be included in the first round this year, so do be surprised he still doesn't come back to Memphis. He's gonna go to overtime elite or some other trash situation.

Also, Duren isn't looking like the Monster we all thought he would be. Dude cannot shoot.

I don't understand how much more anyone could expect from a reclassification kid. If you can get rebounding, rim protection and passable defense from any freshman big you're flying. In Duren's case, he's one rebound short of averaging a double-double while shooting 65%, and he's giving them almost 4 blocks a game - all in just 24 minutes a game. You put a couple of good upperclass scorers around him with a couple more solid college players and I think the team could compete well with Duren at Center.

Duren is very over rated as I've said all along. Duke got the best big in the 22 class . Bona is a project aswell
Duran is not overrated. He skipped his senior year of hs and needs lots of development by a hands on coaching staff. He may have picked the wrong program to acquire that development. But you can't teach his size and athleticism.

Georgia is horrid. Crean is struggling to keep his job. He says thanks Penny.
Clappy isn’t struggling to keep his job. That’s why he went to a football school that couldn’t care less about basketball.

The clapster might hang on longer than you think.
