Wait, you think recruits picked Memphis to go there and win big?
Isn't it the coaches' job to bring his team together?

I was watching the huddle last night during one of Creans multiple timeouts trying to get the ball in.
Penny sat down with the clipboard and started talking, Larry Brown started inching his way into the huddle and eventually was standing in the middle talking to the players while Penny was still seated.
That said, and I'm not about to say Penny is anywhere close to Cal in coaching ability but watching that game is why I despise this one and done model. As highly touted as these players are that he has, they can't beat 2-5 Georgia on December 1.
We've been in , and may still be, in that situation year after year. Our solution is to avoid playing a team like Georgia.

I almost never do this, but I went to the Memphis Rivals board this am to see how bad it was, and I LITERALLY could not find a thread on the game last night. Did any of them actually watch the loss to UGA? WTF
Yeah, for those that thought Duren could come here and play along side Oscar and play some PF, there was no chance of that happening. He is very limited offensively.
Throwing players under the bus for his lack of coaching ability seems like a bold strategy.

I think Emoni may be overrated. It's funny, because they were touting him to be like the next KD. Which he might be but man, he is horrible right now. That team is a dumpster fire.

Seriously...how can he be taken seriously if he blows it with 2 top 5 players and some decent returning talent. He's an absolute joke out there...and I'll be he'll still reel in some kids away from UK every year as many kids don't give a flip of winning but want NIL $$$ and an easy path to NBA draft.

For sure Emoni has a long way to go before he in the same solar system as freshman KD even. At least Jalen Duren has shown he’s elite shot blocker other than that the entire team is in chaos mode. I think if they were ever on the same page they could’ve been the best defensive team in the nation with that group of players especially DeAndre Williams
I would love to see Memphis have to play in the SEC. I don't think they would win half of their games.

They are going to have a problem in their own conference. Heck, UC, who I expected to be not so good, whipped Illinois and actually beat UGA.
Penny is just not a good coach. He’s a good recruiter, but those kids have no idea what they’re doing in the court and then he blames that on them after the game. Dude is a gimmick.
I watch Georgia sometimes just to watch Crean. Same routine on every possession . Walks from baseline to end of coaching block and on way back grabs paper off press table , weird.
Emoni isn't ready physically and is playing out of position. Pretty easy to see why he is struggling. He shouldn't have reclassed.
This is true. Cincy has some good wins (they also have a head-scratching loss to Monmouth?) and will be pretty good- better than Georgia. Houston looks to be pretty good, also. Wichita St and Central Florida are also better than Georgia. Memphis could have some serious struggles this season, even in a weak conference.They are going to have a problem in their own conference. Yeah, all joking aside, that is a disturbing statement Hardaway is making right there. The fact that he's making that statement publicly is not good. If what he is saying is true, it's not good. If what he's saying is just to cover his own rear end, it's even worse. No matter how you slice it, Penny's got trouble with his team. The upcoming schedule means they will likely have more losses to deal with, and if the team is in turmoil losses will only add to the problem. This thing could fall apart right before our eyes. If they couldn't beat Georgia, why should anyone expect them to win AT Ole Miss, against Alabama, and against Tennessee? All 3 of those teams are better than Georgia.
Agree. Problem is that money talks and these kids are getting it so they don't really worry about that other stuff imo.

I posted in a thread a month or so ago that Penny had gotten around 12 kids that were 4 or 5 star recruits and I think only 2 were in the league. The rest had either transferred, declared for the NBA and didn't get drafted or are still at the school.
Not getting on campus until fall hurt Duren and Bates they will get better but they may be in a hole early they can’t get out of to get a good seed or even get in the tournament. They don’t have a pg that’s a big issue too many turnovers and don’t play D which everyone expected.
As far as Duren going there he wanted minutes and shots and I’m sure in his mind thought they could win. And they sold development by hiring Wallace and Larry Brown. Red flags all over for Bates he played for fake high school and nobody expected anything different than what he’s doing now.

Yeah, I hope so, too. If that Memphis-Georgia game is any indication, those other teams will destroy Memphis.
Cal needs to screenshot that and show it to every kid that he's recruiting that is also being recruited by Penny. You can't air out your dirty laundry like that and he's doing it in an attempt to take the heat off himself.
Penny might have to revert to what he did in AAU--go hire Todd Day to actually coach his team.
That's because he can't do what Nike did for him--change his roster up when he was sucking, add players that weren't on his original roster. Also laugh at the AAU hipsters who love to brag about how "in" they are with info and are pumping up these poor decisions for recruits who need to be coached/developed but they love the "buzz" of the Duren/Bates duo at Memphis. Bates looks worse then he did his FR year in HS when he had a great basketball IQ, and every skill he's shown at Memphis has not improved (btw, Penny promised him to be PG--now he's blaming the kids?).

They have HOF Larry Brown who has forgotten more basketball than all of us combined, but he's also a very mercurial person who will bail whenever he feels like it.
Throw in Rasheed Wallace who is a high IQ basketball guy and really good person but he's got to be wondering WTF did I get into in working under Mr. One Cent.
Nothing like making empty promises to get players, not addressing your weakness which everyone who follows CBB saw (no PG) and then trashing the players for not taking advantage of the "freedom".

Memphis has a lot of losses coming. They knew they were going to lose to Georgia. Don’t know one Memphis fan that thought it was done.

Some people that were hard up Penny supporters are turning. I don’t know if you know “fish” out of Mtown, but he’s turning. I know two major boosters (grew up with their kids) who already want this done. Apparently Penny is having trouble maneuvering the politics of Memphis (give the goons access when they want it), so it won’t be long now.
Just waiting the eventual “Larry Brown is no longer part of the Memphis program” and Penny will be soon to follow.
I absolutely love it.
Still worried about Fred’s pockets, but he lies too (I’m donating the best scoreboard in the world to Memphis (1999) so, maybe it’s for nothing.
