After a loss there is a faction that declares we don't run an offense and play "hero ball". While good defensive opponents can disrupt a team and make it harder to get in to offensive sets OR have the offensive run further away from the basket. Dissecting possessions against quality opponents can demonstrate A. we run offensive sets B. we are well coached and get details right.

I can't stand watching teams go throigh offensive sets but just go through the motions. setting proper screens, utilizing them correctly (like Geo demonstartes), and making hard cuts are so important.

What would really demonstrate what we are as a aprogram is to show 2 Jacob Young clips on the defensive end. Exhibit A defending a high ball screen wearing red and Exhibit B defending the same high ball screen wearing green or whatever Oregon's colors are.

Ahhh thank you guys! I’ll keep creating more clips during some free time and will also mute the commentators next time around plus add a little more energy! Appreciate any feedback and feel free to request for specific games! I’ll try and get to them all

Love this...

But Geo I gotta tell you...you need to harness your inner football coach if you are break down film. During the entire explanation you need to either be rewinding and playing the same four seconds over and over or be using your mouse clicker to keep highlighting the part of the play you are speaking about over and over. Tale as old as time.

Was going to suggest muting the commentators, glad to see you will be doing that

"Plus add a little more energy!" I was going to say this. I get that most people can't just jump on stage and do 20 minutes but you know this better than almost anybody. You've got a good voice (sound and opinion) -use it. Knock on a few doors. Ask the RU media people to make some intros. This whole university owes you a favor and a statue in front of the RAC.

Plus add some personality to your commentary:
McConnel shuts him down like a ***** house on election day.
He's so good even Obama Care can't cover him.
He's like a cop on a video cam - can't shoot.
They play like a team ...just not a like basketball team.
He grew so much outdoors started to feel smaller.
He's got a wingspan that lets him shoplift two aisles away.
Rejected like prom night.
Wonder if the ref is going to phone his ex-wife after the game -'cause it's his night for bad calls.
If he was in Space Jam, we'd all be speaking alien right now.
Like an atheist in Catholic school, he forced up a prayer.
Couldn't even buy a basket at the Easter pop-up store.
Showing less effort than a foster mom.
The equipment manager wanted to give him an unlisted number.
Haven't seen a shot so bad since Dallas in '63.
Mrs. Lincoln called that the worst shot she's ever seen.
Coach is madder than a virgin with a venereal disease.

Awesome stuff Geo, and I concur with the poster above regarding your insight on foot positioning. Haven’t heard that anywhere else. Keep it comin…

PS: For the energy thing, try saying this after each made basket:”Boom goes the dynamite!”

The crowd seems to love this.

First time seeing, this is great @Geo_Baker_1 . We dont run a traditional offense that we see around the country so it helps to get commentary on what the plan is because for us casual observers alot of times it just looked like there was no plan and guys were just left to create

also can you please tell us why we seem to never go for 2 for 1’s at the end of half

Don’t drag us into this “we don’t run an offense” nonsense
I’ll say it again, it does not look like we run a perpetual offense at least. We run high ball screen, occasional horns set and every once in a while a floppy set

That went from "we don't run an offense" to "we only run three offenses" quickly
Haha idk what to say man. Some of you just cant reckon with the fact were defense oriented and dont run many sets on offense in the half court. For perspective this is what I consider more of an offense

There is a lot of room between "we don't run an offense" and "we don't run the offense like Iowa".
Iowa/Fran McCaffery = arguably the best offense in college basketball the last few seasons
Pikiell is not as good at coaching offense as McCaffery. Hard to imagine anyone arguing against that.
Did they sometimes seem to pass the ball around aimlessly? Yes, but watch some other teams, lots of teams look like that. Certainly more look like that than look like Iowa offensively.

Those are different arguments.

We run an offense. It might not be the offense you want, but we’re not playing street ball.

That being said, we are defense oriented. Pike said that was the plan from the start; don’t remember if he said this (I think he did but might have been somebody else), but it’s a way to level the playing field when there are only so many top scorers out there and everyone is going after them.

Iowa’s metrics are basically the inverse of ours; great offense but mediocre defense. Houston’s metrics have been great on both ends, but we took them to the wire in the tournament, so it’s not like we can’t compete. Hopefully, with Griffiths and hopefully a couple others coming in at his level, we’ll be able to continue to elevate the offense without sacrificing defense.

It is good stuff.. but does it release "the secret recipe" to the world? Or do all the opponents know what we teach/preach?

Haha i think basketball is a lot more simple than people try to make it. If I were a coach I don’t think I would run my offense much different than coach pikiell’s. If you look at the nba most of their offense is about high ball screen action. Sure they have some sets but at the end of the day you want to create a quick disadvantage for the defense and then make a read. Honestly our Purdue game that i was dissecting is a perfect example. We did high ball screens and ghost screens the whole second half while they ran a bunch of complicated sets. We still won.

i also think it has to do with personnel. Realistically the guys we had on my team the last 5 years probably would not be able to run Purdue or iowas system. Didn’t fit their style of play at all. And pikes knows that which is why we played the way we did. I do think he may have to switch it up this year at the end of shot clock. But Paul and cliff in a ball screen action seems about as dangerous as any set any team will draw up. Paul is going to make all of the right reads off of it.

that 2 for 1… idk man 🤣🤣🤣

and also big ten is most highly scouted league in the country. We all know each other way too well. I definitely won’t be giving anything away that coaches don’t already know.

2 for 1 was probably more my fault. I would always forget. I think my 4th year B knight started getting in my ear about it. We definitely talked about it more my final 2 years. I definitely had a ton of control of the offense at the end of half’s and games and you can’t hear anything. So they may have been telling me to go and i would just be sitting there 🤦🏾‍♂️😂
