he may have used charged words but when the NCAA makes hundreds of millions on the tournament and the rest, and the states and casinos make millions on gambling on theses games, he has a point -- getting a scholarship pales in comparison to what the "adults " are making. This is even more highlighted during the pandemic and the sacrifices players make to satisfy that revenue stream and to add insult to injury he has to take crap from fans as if he was pro fairly sharing that revenue stream. Give the "kid" a break
Let's be honest and place to the side the comments which come down to the ability to market and sell. We have seen what happens on Wall Street when the applecart gets rocked and how when you tinker with things, how fans get triggered here.
Any player at any university or college that performs in a forum where a fee or money is charged to watch that player play, should have a path to market for compensation.....if there was a Chess Club and there were 1000 people who paid money to a university to watch 2 universities battle in chess, those who participate in that chess battle, should have the right to market their skills.....even if those there somehow don't find value in the chess or football and basketball player being able to do so.
He and any other player should be able to and are not allowed to, which is the point made....Which is his point and had a right to express anyway he sees fit in doing. Doesn't mean you have to like it or dislike it. To think there's no value in what a basketball or football team provides beyond the "free education " is absurd.
If any RU fan could tell me what a legitimate 4* or low 5* QB and a 4* RB and 2 4* WRs would equate to for the next 4 seasons for RU football, tell me what that is worth??? I know how valuable it is at Alabama and it is for their school.....does it mean Alabama and their players are worth more to their school.....?? I know it's worth more than a free education.
At RU....Does it mean more donations from Garutti, Greg Brown, you and I......?? Yep....
Does it mean post pandemic, ticket prices will be paid and revenue comes in from advertisements on the RU post game show, with the radio call of Jerry Recco and Chris Carlin on WOR or WCTC......Yep.....
Does Jerry Carino only have an actual job at the Asbury Park Press, because athletes at Seton Hall and RU are his bread and butter..????....Yep.....he's certainly not covering St Peter's at Marist over Villanova at Seton Hall today...
Does it mean I get to spend another 99 bucks a year on a message board to talk sports and players who will ultimately raise the profile of the school.......Yep.....
Unfortunately just because a player has a perceived value to a fan (which is usually wrong by the way), the players value to making RU football a 8-4 program (Schiano) vs 2-10 or 3-9 program (Ash) is worth how much, in donations, SHI advertisements, everything in between??.....the same people criticizing Geo @kyk1827 , were sitting next to me at Barchi's office less than 18 months ago because of what exactly again??....because I have already acknowledged the product and understand its value to what I enjoy....
I certainly don't see SHI slapping a 10 year contract and millions of dollars on Palmer Stadium in Princeton or Jadwin Gym.....
Geo Baker has a right to say whatever he wants, just like Howard Stern, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Curt Schilling, Colin Kaepernick, Mike Francesa and Mad Dog Russo, Clay Travis or anyone on the local radio station in Des Moines, Iowa......
I don't think those folks get everything right all the time, but let's hold Geo Baker to a higher standard than perhaps Marjorie Taylor Greene, or Trump....or AOC or Joe Biden??? Don't take things too seriously folks, fans here take themselves way too seriously.....

I’m a pay the players person, but comments out of frustration don’t help. Modern day slavery? You have players enrolled in schools that wouldn’t get in if it wasn’t for the sport they play. One of the biggest issues for people coming out of college these days is student debt. None of these guys will have that problem going forward. I’m not saying that’s enough. But modern day slavery? Seriously? You’re flying around on a chartered jet and on tv every game playing the sport you love. Yeah, modern day slavery lol.
I paid for every penny of my Rutgers education. I thank God everyday that Rutgers didn't force me into that basketball slavery program.

What kind of nonsense are you spewing here. He earned a scholarship to a wonderful school. He has not earned anything through training in a sport and getting an education . Geo has not earned anything in the game of everyday life. Then My reply is even more simple . Eliminate scholarship sports. Earn the scholarship as several of my family has over the past 10 years by getting top grades in a highly competitive secondary school system. 2 of those are at Rutgers now. Rutgers scholars program.

Because theirs is a “ job” . An actual job under the Rutgers University hiring guidelines. They do actually work mostly everyday. They are responsible for making sure these athletes are getting passing grades , being treated for any illness or injury, and being fed properly. So maybe that’s a good reason they draw a salary. Why pay the average grammar school teacher in NJ a median salary of almost 74k ? Most are not worth 1/2 of that. NJ is near the top in the USA we are in deep crap. The market is set by what is the going price in similar jobs in Power 5 D-1 . No coach is worth that type of $$$$ . If you think it’s out of line May we suggest a letter of complaint to the Rutgers BOG.

No-one should have to sign away their rights to their name and likeness without compensation. Rutgers makes enough on tv rights and tickets and concessions and they’d still make money on merch even if players some tshirts and jerseys. The players couldn’t use Rutgers on it anyway.

Geo's point is somewhat legitimate, somewhat off base, and then using a charged word really adds a whole other element.
Legitimate - these players do sacrifice A LOT to be part of these teams. Probably as much, if not more than the pros in regards to the time they put in and the lifestyle they have to commit to. The reality is that the education part is more of an additional obligation for them to fulfill than it is seen as an advantage.
Where college sports has really gone off the rails is that as the TV money kept growing ... all the excess was getting pointed to coach's salaries and facilities. That creates an envious position for the players.
Imagine in your workplace that you get paid well. But the company business is booming and you're essentially the main producer of it and instead of you seeing an extra dime of it, your manager's salary is ballooning to crazy amounts and your office building keeps getting all these unnecessary bells and whistles just to attract more guys like you. Human nature is going to take over and even if you're paid well and comfortable - there's just too many people getting theirs around you for you to be okay with it. Even if you agreed to this upfront. Especially when you have the media, family, friends, etc. etc. telling you that you should be getting some of this fat pie going around. Oh and imagine you're 18-22 years old too and are being told you can't see your family, gfs, friends, etc. to keep this job.

I think colleges/ NCAA need to institute a cap on coach's salaries and spending budgets on amenities, facilities, etc. If coach's want to make more money than a proposed generous cap, then they can also aspire to get into the pros. Poor choice? More like deliberate choice. With today's racial tension he knew exactly what he was doing with placing "modern day slavery" in the tweet. No he used the “ slavery” term for impact and effect. It was badly misused in the context he intended it for. So now according to Geo Baker college sports are the same as being on a southern plantation run by a slave master? That is wrong pure and simple Baker made it sound racial and in sports you have many different ethnic groups playing together so exactly how does that work? Here’s the thing Geo Baker is a good young man .What Baker needs is learn when and how to express his anger ( and evidently it is anger) over how the system started and how these current players can improve the supposed inequity. I root for the front of the Jersey, players come and go. I like our players but I root for the team not the individual. If Geo was on another team I'd root for Rutgers, not the other team. To say nothing of the merits of what he said, it’s common knowledge that the expression “modern day slavery” is not a comparison to the act of slavery itself. Getting hung up on the comparison just stunts the discussion that should be had.
Lol . If the team goes to the tournament this year, they will get a standing ovation to a sold out RAC next year when that banner is raised . No matter what they say or tweet. True fans don’t care what player say . They care how players play.
