It is so surprising that a guy with his talent cannot do anything except wrestle. It is really starting to make me doubt the athleticism of heavyweight wrestlers.

He could have made a good living wrestling if he had stuck with it. Does he not want to do the work or was he just bored because no one could really compete with him?

Definitely think it’s the work. After the Olympics, not sure Gable ever has had the same type of drive again. He was on top of the world and just coasting off his ability.

90 percent of the athletic talent at that weight plays football.

He got rocked. It happens. Wrestling simply doesn't prepare you for a punch like that to the jaw. That type of strike knocks out 99.99999 percent of the planet. That .00001 percent that can take that punch have almost certainly been rocked by it a bunch of times before....

You can simulate SO MUCH in MMA practices nowadays, but it is EXCEPTIONALLY hard to train for pure bomb throwers and nearly impossible to train to "take a punch". Getting hit how and where he did essentially rattles the off switch of the brain and the rest of the body follows.

He is still every bit as talented as he was before the fight and just as much of a challenger for the entire weight class. This can be the single biggest learning experience that propels him to the top. Or, it can be what makes him say buh bye.

This is one of my favorite quotes of all time: "When you get tagged, your mind only registers two thoughts, back the hell up or get the hell in." Which one will Gable be going forward???

Yep, my guess is that he doesn't have "it". Whatever "it" might be. Drive, tenacity etc.

I recall any entered College and there was talk, of course of him being a potential full-time. Well, he lost in a semi that year and lost in the finals in what would be his senior year.

of course, in between his sandwiched an Olympic gold medal and another NCA title but for whatever reason, he couldn't cut it in fake wrestling, the WWE. He's probably a better wrestler than an actor so that could make sense.

As for the UFC, that's a whole different ball game than any kind of wrestling and it's hard to say how someone's going to respond when you're getting punched and kicked.

Gable needs to drop down a weight class, he looks a bit soft and has a huge reach disadvantage. Adapt or its going to be a short career. And for God's sake lean on your wrestling until your striking improves.

Gable can't make 205.

He's just going to have to put his head down and do the work. You're right about everything else. How he fixes that reach disadvantage is going to be everything.

He hasn’t weighed 205 since hs, probably. He’s a heavy weight.

Im not so sure its dumb. Kids at that weight that are great athletes play football. That is a fact. Just look at the HS HWY rankings every year. How many go on to play football? And that is the kids that actually went out for wrestling. How many more that didnt bother?

A kid that weighs 125, 133, 141, 149 doesnt have many options for other sports. Let alone a sport that pays big money.

Yes, many go on to play football, but to say you are doubting the athleticism of heavyweight wrestlers? We have had the best athletes at that weight that we've ever had in the past decade. I would argue that HWT is more athletic than its ever been right now.

Talented at what? Definitely not fighting. He was flat footed hands down and slow as AF. PRO fighters aren't 99.999999% of the planet... I see which group Steveson is on.

yes. cant argue that. I just wish the pool was deeper.

I think Tristan Wirfs could have been Gable if wrestling was his focus. He has more elite athleticism IMO. I dont think its close strength wise. Tyler Linderbaum could have been a great heavy too. Thats just two recent Iowa guys. Imagine nationwide.

Agreed. Now think of guys like Miles Garrett or JJ Watt when it comes to pure athleticism given their size... A whole other league from guys like Gable. I do think the HWT class in wrestling as a whole has become more "athletic" over the last decade or so but compared to the world's most elite large athletes, there's a pretty sizeable gap.

Yeah, I’m just an armchair fan and have never boxed, but watching that fight it seemed like he got touched by the right hand, then put his nose at the ceiling to get away, and got tagged by the left on the chin. “keep your chin tucked.” It seems he needs a little more technique.

That is kind of my point. We have had the best athletes at hwt than we have ever had. Gable probably being the best of all of them He steps outside the wrestling world and has little to no success.

Gable stood above the rest and it makes me think he seemed like such a great athlete because of who he was being compared to. I could be wrong, but it makes me wonder.

Gable is a btch. His biggest problem is his lack of work ethic/commitment.

No matter how athletic you are, you have to be willing to grind sht out - ESPECIALLY when doing something "new." His problem in WWE was that he literally refused to do the "work." When he was at the performance center, he straight up told the coaches he was not doing top rope work. He got cut because he was unwilling to do any of the nitty gritty hard work.

NFL? As athletic as he is, he refused to grind it out. Stephen Neal was on the practice squad for a year before he made the roster. It takes hours of dedication to be a professional at the level he assumes he's worthy of.

MMA? Jury is out. Hope he's willing to just put his head down and do the work.

I don’t know Gable at all, but this is 100% the impression that I get. Even his return to NCAA wrestling after the Olympics. He seemed to think he could just coast in and crush everyone without putting in the kind of grind that NCAA wrestlers have to do. There is no planet where Wyatt ever beats a fully engaged Gable, so that tells you everything you need to know. When it got even remotely tough he folded.
