What do you think — did Fran Ganter hate being given the task of delivering the note to Joe in 2011 with the phone number to call and be fired?

Or might he have taken just the slightest smidge of inner satisfaction in it, after having been made to turn over the pass-play calls to Jay years earlier?

i don’t remember him ever having been interviewed or making any public comment about the events of 2011 in the years since. Have any of you ever see any such remarks by him?

Lastly, do you think it bugged Fran at all that some BWICAC-ers of yesteryear always wanted to spell his name “Gantner” for some reason?

This seems to insinuate Fran had a grudge toward Joe....as if Joe didn't respect his contributions to the program. That is a possibility but not one i suspect to be true. I haven't heard or read anything about his feelings or disappointment. And honestly I have no idea what the bwicac is and never heard the term while Phil was in charge....but it is a new era.

Fran was a standup guy and never would have disrespected Joe in any way not even mentally. What he actually thinks of Jay may be another matter.

Surma, the weasel that he is, asked Fran to deliver the message since he was one of the few people who wouldn't cause a suspicious media frenzy by showing up at the Paterno home. IIRC, it was simply a request for Joe to call Surma at a given phone number. Fran would have had no idea what Surma was up to. Maybe he was given the impression Surma wanted to tell Joe the BOT supported him. I guarantee Surma got some satisfaction out of firing Joe. Of course, he did it over the phone because he is a gutless weasel.

Anyway, I suspect this thread will be nuked before long.

Was quite honestly not intended that way, it’s something I’ve wondered about off and on since Fran’s exit as OC just a few years after the whole “dividing the play calls with Jay” thing went into place.

I just remember thinking at the time that that seemed like an awkward situation for Ganter, and clearly in the early 2000s he wasn’t ready to “retire” retire since he spent several more years in the administration of the athletic department.

It occurred to me that I never heard of him saying anything at all in the aftermath of the whole mess so that’s why I asked the question.

Was not really insinuating it to be true, but wondering about the possibility of it as you mentioned. It was a passing thought I’d had at the time and had wondered about off and on over the years.

Surma ejoyed it because he blamed Joe for his nephews downfall, even though Joe had nothing to do with it.

Surma is a spineless *****, just like is brother.

Galen Hall was the OC 2004 through 2011.

Jay and Hall shared play calling. Ganter was Asst. Head Coach only.
I am well aware of what the set up was , you just made the claim that Galen was the OC , now you are saying they shared it . which technically they did . Joe was the final word on any play call period. One game a year he would the assistants call their games . Eventually Fran left the coaching staff over clashing with Jay , who had business being there . The fact that Jay is the only former assistant that never got a job , being the Galen and Dick Anderson both retired says it all

CV - as evidenced by the late hour of your 'post', I suspect the imagination of wondering IF is just too much for your thought process. Please recall that Frans wife was also a problem for Fran - not a plain piece of paper with numbers on it. Fran gave alot to PSU, give it a rest.

You mean because she died unexpectedly? Strange way of phrasing it.

You do understand that anything could be true. Maybe Fran has all the respect in the world for Jay Paterno, though reading everything on here nobody would want that to be true. What you were asking for was a bunch of uninformed opinions on something that is really pretty meaningless.

Mabye Fran felt Joe held him back.
Maybe Fran was never that confident in himself and felt that Joe propped him up. Why turned down MSU in 1995?
Maybe Fran though Jay was just a better offensive mind than himself.
Maybe Fran thought Jay shouldnt be near a college football field as a coach.

You want to know what I think. Frans wife died somewhat early with cancer and after that happened it would be real easy to understand standing beside a casket that all those years coaching you probably werent the best husband or father that you could have been because of the time the demanding job you chose forced you to not be home and its very possible that he really wanted out of coaching after that. I think that is really possible, but I have no idea if it is true.

but all of that has nothing to do with anybody named Paterno. Maybe he delivered the message to Paterno, because he was asked to. Nah, couldnt be that simple.

Talked to Fran at Cornell games. His son was the QB,my son Strong Safety. He was a complete gentleman. Never said a bad word about Joe or any player. Total BS to say anything different.
