I was a freshman at UK that year.
I remember seeing the Ernie and Bernie show at Memorial Coliseum. I HATED those guys. I can't remember if we ever beat them.

I think that was Rodney Woods out of Lone Jack (Bell County ) . Rodney wanted to go to UK but Coach Rupp recruited Ronnie Lyons over him. They both averaged about the same but if Woods had played in Rupps system he would have been something else. Probably has carpal tunnel from standing 30 feet out bouncing the ball for two minutes before attempting to run a play. HATED Mears and Stu Aberdeen

That is great info. My DAD hated Mears.. I mean hated him called him a sawed-off sob every time we played them. He also hated Paul Galvan the ref that used to do UK games. That guy is great compared some of these guys today.

Thought those of you that can remember an old clip from 1975,Kentucky vs Tennessee..Damn I miss those days..This team would eventually beat an undefeated Indiana team in the Mideast Regional Final and go all the way to the final game before losing to UCLA,in John Wooden's final game..enjoy

Final unbeatable game. Regardless of who they were playing that day.

That was before Thompson-Boling. That was Stokely Athletic Center, which was just as bad if not worse!

Heck, Ray Mears even brought out Unicycle riders and Jugglers when UK came to town. Felt like Barnum & Bailey Circus.[eyeroll]

I also recall the LSU Tiger mascot rappelling from the rafters in Baton Rouge in the Dale Brown days. Much more entertaining than tee-shirt night, if you ask me.

Aberdeen paced the UT sidelines like Groucho Marx he got the Marshall University job and died in year of a heart attack

Spencer Haywood(future NBA hall of famer) , was going to go to UT around the time UK went 13 -13. Stu Aberdeen almost had him through the door and the NCAA ruled him ineligible. Mears blamed Rupp for that behind the scenes. Haywood would have had UT dominating in the late sixties, unfortunately the only book he ever opened was a coloring book. Rupp was in Mears head (he probably blamed Rupp when King was running around campus stealing tv's)

You are right. Had forgotten about that. He wasn't very old. Great recruiter. Remember him going to Germany and getting a guy about 7'4 (Nels Akerboom I think). They had a picture of him and Ackerboom side by side at stokley. Stu didn't come up to his belt. Akerboom never came to UT but the pic , in the News Sentenal , was hillarious

Remember those days well and that Stokley floor. For those who talk about referees today, well going in to Stokley to play Ray Mears seemed almost always to be a one sided game by the officials. Guess I was wearing the blue tinted shades even then....

Every UK fan hated Mears, because we could not win there.

My memory fades with age, but any you guys remember playing Notre Dame, and they played stall ball? I think we won 20/18. I could be wrong, asking for help here.

It was the 1981-82 season IIRC. UK won 34-28 after leading 18-12 at the half.

I don't know how major college teams could ever play on a tartan surface as UT had at the time. I recall the old surface at the Seaton Center that was tartan and it was awful.
