1965 or 1966. I was 8 or 9 years old. We played Southern Miss @ Scott field. We Won. My uncle took me. My Dad was an Ole Miss grad but my uncles flipped me. His dad and his 4 brothers all went to State. We sat in the faculty section as one of my other uncles (another of my Dad's brothers) was a professor at Sate and got us tickets. I remember D. D. Lewis. He was the best linebacker I've ever seen. This game made me a State fan. Paul Davis was a horrible coach.

Listening to 1974 game at Memphis St. Down by 7 with 2 min to go, Felker led a 98-yard drive & 2-point conversion to win 29-28. Been a Bulldog ever since.

My first game also. Attended and rang cowbell all the way home. 10 years old.

Mine was Vs. Marshall in 1979

State vs Navy. 1983.
I think it was homecoming at State. We beat them 48-0. I made a comment after the game on the ride home about how terrible that team was. My dad slowed suddenly and pulled the van off to the side of the road on the Trace to tell me about how everyone on the Thundering Herd football team had been killed in a plane crash earlier in the decade. I was not to disrespect their memory, he told me. The rest of the ride home, with 8 family members and a full complement of tailgate gear packed into a in a Ford conversion van, was as quiet as the grave.

I also remember thinking during the game how crappy our stadium was compared to the 'Big Stadium in Jackson.'

vs Kansas St in 1974 at Scott Field
Steve Grogan was KSU QB

I started going to ball games with my dad in '74. I don't remember the opener with William & Mary, but I remember the UGA game that year. Lots of talk in the Memorial Stadium parking lot how we hardly ever played and know one knew what to expect. We beat the hell outta them that day.

I can remember bits and pieces from 1978/79, but the 1980,28-21 win over Illinois was the first I remember well.
The first game I attended was my junior year of high school,1988, vs. Bama. Of course, this was the “Tech and 10” year, but we played a good Bama team(Derrick Thomas, Keith McCants, etc.) fairly close. I remember it being 34-27 Bama at the half, and I think they eventually won like 53-34.

We've won games against bigger named schools that got a lot more press but this was an emotional and important win for us. I was there and out of all the many games (including some of our biggest wins) I've attended this was the most satisfying and fun for me. Kinda got a 4000# gorilla off of our back at the time.

The first game I remember was State beating UMiss in 1970. I was only 5, but my dad called me over to listen to the second half on the radio. I didn't understand very much of it. Later that night, cowbells were ringing throughout our neighborhood in Jackson. They would just start clanging from time to time, kind of like firecrackers going off on the 4th.

The first game I attended was the 1974 loss to Auburn. That whole experience is etched into my memory, from the moment we parked at the Farmer's market to the clock ticking down on the loss. However, until reading through this thread I had forgotten that Felker was the QB. For some reason I thought it was Threadgill. Anyway, that was the game that prompted Shug Jordan to complain about the cowbells.

1965 in Jackson. 10-7 loss to Bama

My dad took me to my first college game in 1965 in Jackson when the Dogs played Bama. I was 12 years old. I remember the game to this day. Bama hit a long td pass on their very first play from scrimmage. They scored a fg in the second half to take a 10-0 lead. The Dogs scored a td to make it 10-7. MSU had repeated chances to take the lead, but were stopped. A late fg to tie the game was blocked by Bama and they held on for the win.
Bama went on to win the AP National Championship that year. It was a great effort that day in Jackson. A tidbit from that day is that OM had played LSU that afternoon in Jackson. It was a double header of SEC games in Jackson that day.

I’ll stop and leave you with this. One of my best friends is a UGA grad. He drove home every weekend from Memphis and went to the games with his dad. When he lost his dad he went to the home opener...walked up the ramp...saw the green grass and walked back to his car and hasn’t been back. Long live awesome Dads like mine.

I understand this.

My aunt introduced me to MSU athletics. Neither of my parents graduated from there, and if anything my Dad is a big Archie fan. She took me and my brother to our first games in the ‘90’s, not sure of the first. We were there for the Hazlewood kick, so that one probably stands out the most. Her sister brought her family from Arkansas to that one, and they waited by the car for a few hours while we wrote our names and cuss words we were dared to write by frat boys on the field goal posts.

Her family has donated a lot to MSU and went to everything. She always had great seats and let me use them; if she didn’t have enough, she’d send her BDC bracelet out and let us come in with it. She was kicked out more than once for this offense, but wouldn’t dare say who she’d given her bracelet to. She got to know Dr. Keenum personally, and he gave her his number to call him if it ever happened again, and he’d handle it.

The last game I attended, she snuck me and herself into the new Gridiron club seats near the end of the game of the final home game. She was never scared to push the limits for a little fun and would never apologize for that, and I’ll never forget that night. I hate she missed our #1 ranking, our Omaha run this year, and our girls basketball runs. She would have been on cloud nine with all of that and would have been rewarded for being a diehard all of those years.

She passed away suddenly the next year; Dr Keenum attended her funeral. I haven’t attended a game since, for a myriad of reasons, but certainly partly because it will just feel very foreign without her. Hopefully plan on making one this year, though.

Salute to her; if you knew her, you were lucky.

State vs Navy. 1983.

1976 North Texas State. Scott field. Wooden south end zone bleachers. Biblical rain. Sun came out at half. Downpour in the second half. Me and my cousins who were 6 Through 9 years old looked like sewer rats.

I went to games throughout the 70s as a child, as early as 71 or 72, and I have some random memories, but the first vivid memory is bama 1980, just for the sheer magnitude of it.

I was at the Illinois game with my family. That was a filler game (like Marshall 1979). A trip of a lifetime, I would welcome playing them again in a home and home.

1981 USM-MSU in Jackson. It was one of the hardest hitting games I ever saw. MSU throttled a potent USM offense. It came down to a muffed punt deep in MSU territory that USM converted to win. Two great teams went toe to toe. USM beat Florida State 58-14 in Tallahassee the next week.

Thought it was 1971 Vandy @ Scott Field. We got blown out in the 4th quarter. That was my first game to attend. But looking back over the records, I remember listening to one of the Ok State games on the radio in 70 or 71.

This was my first game day experience at State. One of our coaches at Northeast Lauderdale was a state grad and took a bus load of us up to watch.

I’m from NOLA so had never heard of MSU. Sister went to USM, so sometime in the early 80’s went to USM/MSU game in Jackson. USM won (I think). Years later got a chance to go to work for a company located in Starkville (Interview was my first trip there.). Fell in love with the town. Got my MBA from State and been a fan ever since.

I was 12 when I attended my first MSU football game. Sept. 5th 1981 in Jackson. Dawgs 20 Memphis State 3.

My 2nd game was later that year in Jackson. Southern 7 Dawgs 6.

I didn't realize, until looking up the '81 season just now, that we got all the way up to #7 in the polls that year before stumbling through our last 5 games.

1st college game I attended was in 1977 at Moorhead, MS Delta vs OM freshman team. Neighbor had a cousin playing for MS Delta and he asked my dad and me to ride up from Silver City with him.

Would like to say Delta beat that *** but at 8 yrs old I didn't pay attention to the score and only about half of the game.

I was a kid so my memory isn't great. But I think I remember going to the game vs. TN when P. Manning came in. Was there an orange airplane or something that flew over during the game? or before the game?
That was the first game I remember going to and I remember the traffic was backed up well passed the Clayton Village exit on Hwy 82.

MSU vs. Florida in 1981, Veterans Memorial Stadium. Not sure if this is the first game I ever went to--it may have been a MSU/USM game--but it just always stood out. I only lived about 4 blocks away from the stadium, and I remember walking to and from the game that day.
