You could have. A buddy of mine from high school grew up pretty poor, but he was smart and pretty crafty. He made it through medical school. He thought that would be his ticket . He ended up marrying a gal who is also a doctor. She’s highly specialized and much more ambitious than him, so she makes bank and he spends most of his time sailing around the Puget Sound. I get a little nauseated when I hear “she completes me” but in many ways it’s often true. Personally, my wife’s strengths and influence have made me a better person.
Not rich but makes a little more than I did. I retired 5 years ago at 56 and she gets me health insurance. I saved like crazy before retirement and she will retire at 55 eventually. She's 12 years younger than me.

My wife and I are both medical professionals and at 68 we’re both still working.
That is great if you are both doing want you want. Some people want to keep working, some have to keep working and some don't have to or want to. When I got laid off at 56 I thought about finding a new job but decided I didn't want to start over somewhere else and I did not need the money. So I got back into some old hobbies I had ignored and found a new one. I could be busier but I like having no commitments or obligations.
Everyone is different and retirement may surprise people. It may not be the nirvana many think. Definitely not for me- thought it would be.

One of the first solutions they have for the whining adult kid is to cut off contact with the parents. I can see that if it’s an abusive situation with parents having substance abuse problems. But damn that’s terrible advice. Set some reasonable terms and boundaries. Don’t crush grandma and grandpa.
Well that problem with that...is what is "abuse" to one person is different to others.
I got way fewer whippings that I probably deserved but one time my mom went off for some reason I didn’t understand. She cornered my in a hall closet and kicked me then whacked me with a broom stick. I was probably 5 or 6. Going through menopause with 3 kids under six with the last two twins. Crazy times.
My sister holds the record (in my house out of the 4 of us kids) with 16 hits from the belt at one time. She was in 3rd grade. Then she was forced to stand in the corner while crying. Ha!
