Fairfield might surprise us. Prob won't beat us, but will surprise us.
Yeah they held their own for the most part. Iowa wins comfortably, but they didn't quit. Scored more on our D than any other team.

Jan just played the standard drop/help defense. Fairfield's player were very in-rhythm and comfortable on their 3s. Iowa literally did nothing to disrupt Fairfield's 3p shots.

It's not the players' fault. That defensive scheme has sucked for decades, yet there it is. Head scratcher.

Umm... won by 14.

Half of those 3s by Fairfield were unconscious, deep. Won't happen often.

Fairfield has several athletic players that don't quit and are well coached. A few of them could play for the Hawks....#0 Heurter 6'0 gd; 25 Scott 5'8 guard; Anderson # 5 6'1 'Road Runner' (inside player). Possible portal fillers if needed? I think it took a while for Iowa to realize this was not a gimme game and they were going to have to play. Good experience for us.

HS is just lost on offense when she's at the free throw line with her back to the basket.

Not sure what they're trying to accomplish there?

Good test from Fairfield. Their coach is pretty damn hot.

Without rules society crumbles.

Probably the only game I’ll see in person this year. Ava H is good. Need the bigs to finish better against better competition. Addie Deal impressed me a lot and Houston was physical and glad Jan gave her a lot of run in this game. McCabe I swear either swished or airballed every three she took. Kylie played great. Fairfield is a good team.

Iowa State 106. Indiana 95
So what does that mean? Neither team plays defense? Is Indiana good this year?

UConn can do all this and guard 1000% better. We will be blown out of the gym if we cannot play better defense on the parameter. We need to pressure the ball more to disrupt elite offenses.

No other team is going to hit 18 3s against Iowa, including UConn It's great that you are considering UConn, but this wasn't UConn.
Regardless, not many teams will give UConn a game this year, and Iowa probably isn't one of them. Just hope they get Wright back and Heiden can stay out of foul trouble.

Note: I generally don’t know what I am talking about. I really like this team in many ways. That said, I am really excited about next year’s team as this year’s frosh have experience and learn to play together. The pieces will be there next year, and then the following year when we have everyone back except Kennise (barring transfers) promises a solid team. I am not dismissing the potential for this and next years’ teams and next, but 2027-28 should be amazing.

Are these type of games for portal scouting?
Blake DuDonis (Fairfield AC & husband of HC) told us that they are close to Raina. He approached her last February about possibly coming to play us, and Iowa was open to playing. They are a very good opponent to help the Iowa team get better, especially given that Drake and UNI are having off years.

He said they were excited to "play in front of one of the best crowds in the country" and to get to face the kind of teams they'll hopefully get to see in the tournament.

He also said "We also recruit Iowa and Minnesota a decent bit, so also created a chance for some of our recruits to see us in person when normally they wouldn’t." Maybe not the player direction we'd prefer 😉😆But likely not Iowa recruits anyway.

I don't think Fairfield usually loses many to the portal. They tend to get good players from less successful midmajor teams (Marshall,Sienna, N Texas, etc.) They actually got Huerter from Rutgers last year and Alli Campbell from PSU in the portal from the Big10 for this season. Alli was a highly rated 5* (grade 98) Notre Dame recruit in the ESPN 2020 class. She hated ND. Apparently Ivey froze her out. She transferred to PSU quickly. She then had 2 ACL tears 🥺 but played 3 years at PSU and is spending her final grad/Covid year with Fairfield. She has never really been outstanding though, but was ok on the struggling PSU teams these last few years.
