With those facts in mind, it should have surprised no one Wednesday when Calipari took to Twitter to announce that every eligible member of his team — even the walk-ons — would be submitting their names for draft eligibility this year thanks to new rules that allow players to test the waters up to three times and make informed decisions about their future.

So what?!?!?!?!? What's the big deal? If I had a kid at Wabasha Northwest Christian A&M Tech School for Plumbing, I'd have them test the waters if only for the experience of it.

We are UK. And we are the gold standard. If you don't like being a trend-setter move along.

Brilliant move by Cal. Everyone's talking about us. He's a master of publicity.

It's dumb & it's embarrassing.

So, he & his staff don't have the ability to look at a walkon, or the player who never plays, and tell him that you can't play in the NBA? Of course they do. So why do this, other than to poke the NCAA. That's fine I guess, and who am I to tell him not to. But it's beneath us as the greatest college basketball program in the country.

It's also disrespectful to those who have to work through the paperwork needlessly.

It's akin to me deciding to bring all 14 players on my local small high school team, none of,which will receive a basketball scholarship of any kind, and line them up outside his office at Memorial Coliseum so that he could evaluate them all for possible scholarships at UK. It's a joke.

You're dumb and embarrassing.

Fix the system, don't blame the people who are operating within the legal bounds of that system for their own benefit. Why shouldn't these players get whatever they can out of this experience?

The system has nothing to do with this. It's one decision, to make an entire team, walkons & all apparently, put their names in for the NBA draft.
How does this advance the cause of UK basketball, or those players who are practice players for the Cats?

All publicity is not good publicity. Much of the country, basketball wise, is collectively rolling their eyes at our coach & our program today.

It has nothing to do with advancing UK basketball. It has 100% to do with getting these players NBA feedback on what to improve to increase their NBA stock if they have any at all. They are allowed to do this 3 times. It is free and the feedback from NBA scouts is invaluable to those kids with dreams of getting to the league. #PlayersFirst

So you feel like that feedback is imperative, this year, for our walkons...Dom...Matthews...etc?

Sorry, not buying what you're selling.

Don't matter to me anyway. If I was them I'd do the same myself.
Cal can't stop any of the walk on's or whoever wants to submit their name to the draft. It's not his decision.
Each player needs to do this so they can each guage themselves on where they are in their development and what they need to work on. This is like career day if you will when you were in HS.

Not imperative and no one is saying it is. But it is helpful. Helpful for a guy like Dom to understand what the next level thinks of his game and the areas he needs to work on to get there. If the NBA allows this three times, why not? Too many haters. What is the problem? Why are people losing their minds? Take a step back.

Ok you have no answer to my question. Thanks. I'm sure that feedback will be invaluable to our walkons as they sit down with their parents & advisors & decide how the NBA figures into their futures.

And apparently you care enough to respond to me twice.

Not losing my mind here, but if Dom doesn't understand he is not on the NBAs radar then, well. Same goes for our walkons.

The NBA has always made the draft open to any and all individuals who want to declare. My brother even declared a few years ago, and he didn't even play for his high school team. He ran track.

There's nothing wrong with encouraging kids to take advantage of something that was always made freely available to them. You're overreacting to this.

Better recruiting method? Announce the whole team will announce for nba draft

Or

Hire strippers in the dorms for recruits and their parents

One is harmless and gets publicity one is not. Which one is more embarrassing?

Ok forgive me for assuming I might get a reasonable answer.

I don't care what Louseyville does. And it has nothing to do with this issue.

Rex it's harmless. It's Calipari stirring the pot. Not all will go past applying. Only a few will be invited. The nba only takes so many

I look at it like this. If this rule was in place last year we might have had dakari on this years team. You have a lot longer time to make a decision. If dakari didn't get invited to the combine does he still go?

Calipari has said numerous times he has advised some or thought some would stay over his time here. This just gives him ammo both ways. It promotes the players that have the talent for the nba and also backs up reasoning to those who are not ready.

While all of what you say makes sense, I don't think any of it is the reason, with the exception of "it's Cal stirring the pot."
It probably is harmless, at least in a vacuum, but it's unnecessary & im not sure it's a good look.

I think it is more beneficial for the borderline first rounders and the delusional players. It gives them options and in your face opinions. Not to mention it gives you time not to make a mistake that could cost you going forward. Dakari is just one example. If rule was in place last year he might have came back. Especially if he was invited it would have been a wake up call

Why is Cal doing this? What's his real reasons? Because we all know it's not "because they can so why not."

It's really not that hard to understand the reasons for doing this. One, it's an opportunity for Cal to demonstrate that when he says he will support their career aspirations, he means it. This strengthens his relationship with current players and bolsters his recruiting pitches. He can contrast his approach with draft comments other coaches, like Roy Williams, have made in the past.

Two, it increases the likelihood that marginal players will return. There's a stigma that would have come with Dakari withdrawing if he were the only one to do so. However, if Alex, Lee, and Ulis also would have withdrawn last year, then it's less about Dakari not being good enough and more about him just being one of several to withdraw. This is a demonstration of Cal understanding the psychology behind making the final decision, and understanding how to create the circumstances most conducive to players coming to the right decision on their own.

Someone as smart as yourself should have understood that.

I don't think it's about the walk-ons having NBA aspirations, if they did, they wouldn't be walk-ons
it's about the entire team doing this together with the knowledge that most will be back - and no one will be singled out for returning. And when they do, they return as a team - think about the bond that will forge
at least....that's my personal opinion on why it was done this way; at least in part

One the most stupid things I have ever heard of. I don't care if they can pull their name out or not. When does common sense come in to play? There are only three KY players that have a legitimate chance. The rest should focus on being a student athlete.

That's the beauty of it!!!! They can go get feedback and not make a stupid mistake and when they come back they aren't being singled out

I'm sure you meant legitimate - auto correct?

It's not stupid by any means - there is a lot more to this than just a group of guys thinking they can go pro. Most know they will not.
But I've already stated my position on this

It's not about understanding. It's that I disagree, at least with your 1st point. Cal has already demonstrated, easily & without a doubt, that he has the players interest at heart & supports their career aspirations. No one questions that. This has nothing to do with any of that, in my opinion. I agree with W2R that it's just Cal stirring the pot with the NCAA. I get that. I just don't go along with it. If he's gonna do this kind of stuff, don't go on tv & whine about our seeding, or placement, etc.. If you're going to poke them, and goodness knows they need poking, don't then turn around & act incredulous when you & the team are not treated like golden childs.

I like how people actually think their opinions matter when it comes to whether or not a student athlete should leave school.

College player: "Yeah, I dunno, let me check the guy's opinion on the message board before I decide"
