With those facts in mind, it should have surprised no one Wednesday when Calipari took to Twitter to announce that every eligible member of his team — even the walk-ons — would be submitting their names for draft eligibility this year thanks to new rules that allow players to test the waters up to three times and make informed decisions about their future.

So, he & his staff don't have the ability to look at a walkon, or the player who never plays, and tell him that you can't play in the NBA? Of course they do. So why do this, other than to poke the NCAA. That's fine I guess, and who am I to tell him not to. But it's beneath us as the greatest college basketball program in the country.

It's also disrespectful to those who have to work through the paperwork needlessly.

It's akin to me deciding to bring all 14 players on my local small high school team, none of,which will receive a basketball scholarship of any kind, and line them up outside his office at Memorial Coliseum so that he could evaluate them all for possible scholarships at UK. It's a joke.

The NBA has always made the draft open to any and all individuals who want to declare. My brother even declared a few years ago, and he didn't even play for his high school team. He ran track.

There's nothing wrong with encouraging kids to take advantage of something that was always made freely available to them. You're overreacting to this.

While all of what you say makes sense, I don't think any of it is the reason, with the exception of "it's Cal stirring the pot."
It probably is harmless, at least in a vacuum, but it's unnecessary & im not sure it's a good look.

I think it is more beneficial for the borderline first rounders and the delusional players. It gives them options and in your face opinions. Not to mention it gives you time not to make a mistake that could cost you going forward. Dakari is just one example. If rule was in place last year he might have came back. This strengthens his relationship with current players and bolsters his recruiting pitches. He can contrast his approach with draft comments other coaches, like Roy Williams, have made in the past.

Two, it increases the likelihood that marginal players will return. There's a stigma that would have come with Dakari withdrawing if he were the only one to do so. However, if Alex, Lee, and Ulis also would have withdrawn last year, then it's less about Dakari not being good enough and more about him just being one of several to withdraw. This is a demonstration of Cal understanding the psychology behind making the final decision, and understanding how to create the circumstances most conducive to players coming to the right decision on their own.

Someone as smart as yourself should have understood that.

I don't think it's about the walk-ons having NBA aspirations, if they did, they wouldn't be walk-ons
it's about the entire team doing this together with the knowledge that most will be back - and no one will be singled out for returning. And when they do, they return as a team - think about the bond that will forge
at least....that's my personal opinion on why it was done this way; at least in part

It's not about understanding. It's that I disagree, at least with your 1st point. Cal has already demonstrated, easily & without a doubt, that he has the players interest at heart & supports their career aspirations. No one questions that. This has nothing to do with any of that, in my opinion. I agree with W2R that it's just Cal stirring the pot with the NCAA. I get that. I just don't go along with it. If he's gonna do this kind of stuff, don't go on tv & whine about our seeding, or placement, etc.. If you're going to poke them, and goodness knows they need poking, don't then turn around & act incredulous when you & the team are not treated like golden childs.
