I can’t get excited about this. He’s a young kid with money, so I can understand his feeling like he needed a gun for protection, and all of us that beleive in gun rights should agree.
Did he do something really dumb and buy an illegal gun? Sounds like it, but should be minor charges. Kid is not a criminal.

This is the real problem. IF they tie that gun to him, (personally, with evidence), his age, ball player status, and no priors won't do much to save him. You can't play arounf with that kinda thing. Smart people with those only take those out of their private hiding spots only once, and they are never seen again. That's a burner, folks. ...unless you're young and dumb and think it's cool.

Michigan law says you can have a gun I. Your vehicle IF it’s in a case, unloaded, and locked. Or in the trunk. UNLESS you have a valid CCP/CPL. Then you can have it loaded and on you.
Considering the numbers are filed off and I highly highly doubt he has a concealed license? He done.
But the car wasn't his - right? If so, he pleads the Shaggy Defense and gets off with a misdemeanor plea deal?
It all hinges on ownership of the gun. They will start squeezing until they can put ownership on someone. If it really isn't his, someone will have to claim it or snitch.

I'm a little confused how we got from failing to stop at an intersection to finding a gun in the car. I wouldn't think running a stop sign would be enough for a search of the vehicle. Makes it more likely that he either had it on his person or it was in plain sight I would think

I wouldn’t bet since obviously I don’t have the information but since those guns have a high probability of being stolen or used in a crime, I’d imagine they’re going to take fingerprints. If his fingerprints are there?
I read about a case recently of a guy and his girlfriend trafficking a kilo of coke from Chicago to their state some 6 hours away. They were pulled over in a rental car that had a bullet hole in the driver door. since no record was filed about the bullet hole in the door, they used that in court to an acquittal. Kilo in the trunk, bullet hole in the door, they didn’t know anything and they’re not guilty.
There are many ways around this kind of thing especially since it’s not his car, but even then, he was driving and the guns are there. Many times that is enough. Ignorance doesn’t always work unless you’ve got something substantial like the case above.
So, he was driving a borrowed car and can claim the gun is not his and he had nothing to do with removing the serial number from it. That might work for him. He's suspended from the team until this matter is resolved, which will likely not happen until after the season starts. He may have dodged a bullet. If his prints are on the weapon, he's right back where he was, though.
IF he manages to come out of this without a conviction, the other issue that needs to be addressed is the crowd he is surrounding himself with. This could be a huge learning experience for him if he will take it as that. Assuming the gun truly isn't his, he borrowed this car from someone who is a shady character and he needs to get away from such people. If he manages to get out of this without any long term consequences, this should be a wake-up call.
This is one of the dangers for guys like this returning to their hometown area for college. All the people who knew him growing up are right there and the hangers-on are numerous. Any mistakes from your past tend to crop up and any shady characters you knew will surely find you. He may need to transfer again just to get away from this.

I can't help but find it extremely fitting that if he (or the driver) just followed the damn road signs, they would have never found the gun. That's what's hysterical here.. hubris got them in trouble.
I personally would be slightly hesitant to pin the blame of an illegal altered serial number firearm, on someone who owns illegal altered serial number firearms.
Yeah. Filed off serial numbers means FBI and ATF involvement. They’re going to want to know where those guns came from. If car isn’t his, owner will be questioned. If owner doesn’t own the guns it comes back on Bates.
