Emmert asked about the UNC academic scandal and says the "quality of what goes on in the classroom" is up to the institution.

Are we surprised here? So basically Emmert says you can recruit kids and give them grades to stay eligible and the NCAA does not care. I wonder how the people at Georgia feel about that when they got busted for having some weak "fake" type classes.

UK needs to stop requiring kids to go to class then. There's no point in requiring it since it's clearly unnecessary under NCAA rules.

He does not want the ncaa to be sued. Basically, he said unc cheat is solely responsible. GBB
NCAA says organization is not responsible for students’ actual education

UNC, which was also sued, has admitted to the fraud, but also asked for a judge to throw out the case, saying the athletes waited too long — seven years — to sue and the “educational malpractice” theory doesn’t apply. UNC claims it is protected by state law.

Delay and do several investigations to get to a point past 7 years and then admit wrong doing. On the other hand, 3100 student athletes never realized something was wrong for 23 years? NO RESPONSIBILITY on both sides?

Emmert is exactly who we thought he was.........

What a cop-out comment! And no one benefitted from it either huh?

I'm still not clear on how what Carolina did is okay, but clearing Derrick Rose to play than rescinding is not? Shouldn't that be an institution determination as well?

UNC should absolutely self-impose sanctions. Post-season ban, scholarship reductions, etc. They know that they cheated as an institution to keep players eligible. Everybody knows it.

Their actions to this point demonstrate a colossal disregard for anything resembling integrity.

Emmert is going to ruin college basketball unless schools refuse to be part of ncaa and start a new governing body. Dry up ncaa money trail and that takes down ncaa.

Their actions since the mid-80's in setting up this sham of a school is a colossal disregard for anything resembling integrity.

I wonder if he has a comment about non existent classes and forged grades.

Like i've said 100 times. The people who are having a circle jerk over the thought of UNC getting put on probation and having to vacate wins are going to be in for a big let down.

The NCAA has repeatedly said that they don't care about UNC's cheating.

Just opens up thousands of more possibilities - like someone said, why even require classes? Why have GPA requirements? Hell, do it above board. Create a basketball and football degree, have it all open book or participation classes. What could they do?

That statement really isn't in context. They are referring to the law suit against UNC and the NCAA. In that context, I agree. (May need to take a bath now) A student has a "contract" with a school to provide an actual education. That contract isn't in place with the NCAA. Whether or not fake classes were used to keep ineligible students eligible for play, and therefore violating NCAA rules, is another matter entirely. Emmert the Weasel wasn't speaking to that.

So, if I am a running one of the schools who've been hit with academic violations, I'm bringing a lawsuit against the NCAA for discrimination, unfair treatment, or whatever my well-paid attorneys can think of. He's been hinting for a while that they will get off scot-free.

This isn't exactly a revelatory statement. The NCAA wears a lot of hats (probably too many), but it doesn't have command and control over academics.

And that's a good thing.

That's why UNC had to act here first with the Wainstein Report, then the (ongoing) NCAA review picks up from there.

Basically Emmert echoing Cardale Jones' sentiment of "we didn't come here to play school..."

god that is a sorry lot...

I think change is coming...the current NCAA and those who rule it are about to change...

so Emmert and crew are essentially going out with their middle fingers flying...

they're embracing their incompetency and hypocrisy...

It was, in much the same way. The NCAA didn't investigate/invalidate Derrick Rose's score. The Educational Testing Service (ETS), the company that administers the ACT and has responsibility for its integrity, did.

Once ETS ruled Rose cheated (and it took forever for them to do so), the NCAA moved in from there.

I just like that when defending itself the NCAA essentially stole a quote from Demarcus Cousins. This ain't no spelling bee. Not our problem we just here to ball out.

Alright, pandora's box is opened. Every school should create a major specifically for athletes that do not want an actual degree. Never do any work. All it will cost is the school's dignity and credibility.

What a weasel

I hold that jerk in total, full contempt for what he is and what he stands for: complete irresponsibility for the kids whose futures he directly oversees, can revoke, can alter and can promote

Thoroughly immoral and irredeemably dishonest

No principles whatsoever other than the God-almighty dollar and covering his bald, pimply ***

If the NCAA does nothing post review then college athletics needs to be ran as a semi pro organization. Education should be removed from the NCAA's website as part of their mandate and the NCAA should have to pay taxes.

They can separate the Olympic sports into a different org and make it tax free.

Ole Roy probably has an ear to ear grin right now. He knows the NCAA will give UNC little more than a slap on the wrist, if that.

Motto...Just don't ever admit to any wrong doing! The NCAA leaves it up to the school. If you report it then you're guilty. Otherwise...the NCAA is not involved.

Sadly the majority with either not read your post or are incapable of understanding it and will continue to act like the ncaa is protecting unc.

The ncaa is being sued for not providing a education because of Carolina's fake classes. The ncaa does not educate thus are trying to separate themselves from the education side of this so that they can't be sued. Unc is still going to get the crap knocked out of them, it's just being slowed down by this kind of stuff.

If the NCAA doesn't educate, and has no responsibility in that area, then it can't punish member institutions for anything academic, correct? That's the precedent they've set.

Except that they were making these same kind of comments before they got sued. So there's that.

This is very true. But this time they're saying it while defending themselves from a lawsuit which almost makes their statement logical. Almost.

It's not saying that at all. It's merely saying it's not the arbiter of purely, or at least fundamentally, academic matters.

If those situations, that arbiter needs to act before the NCAA does. In things that aren't purely academic (like, say, where athletic personnel were playing games with academics and player eligibility ... see SYRACUSE), the NCAA's Committee on Infractions has a role from the start.

They make up a new rule whenever punishment does not fit their agenda. Nobody on this board is surprised by his statement. Why even keep up with an athlete's grades?

After so much time it is no wonder some people believe NC will never be punished. In fact it is hard to believe in fairness at this late date.

So a school can make up classes, a small step above not requiring academic participation at all, and that's out of their scope, but if you cheat in an actual class, that's in their scope? Got it, that's a strong distinction.

What's happens if you cheat in a made up class?
