Too much being read into this.
But I wish these kids would not say or imply they are staying the draft if a first-rounder. Too many kids have been duped by assurances that don’t pan out. It also opens the door for some to unfairly question a kid’s commitment if/when he comes back.
Best move is to just announce the intent to go thru the process.

My god why in the hell aren't we seeing 50 or so more "all-stars" test the waters in the draft? for *** sake if EJ can then why not 6'10" Joe-Bob down in the holler playing for Bartholomew International Community College in conference USHay?

EJ was a top 10 recruit. Probably fully expected to be OAD going into the season.

If you think you know better than the entire combine/feedback/testing the waters system, sure. But all of these guys seem to find it useful or else they wouldn't bother.

Anyone in sports or teaching or really any walk of life knows that a lot of times, a different voice and different set of eyes can help a lot. Having an NBA coach or GM or longtime vet tell you something is going to stick in a way it might not from your dad or friend or college coach.

We also know several of these coaches don't have the kids' best interest at heart. And even if they do, the people around the kid don't always believe that. Hearing it from the league can be a big dose of reality.

The league takes players and eats them up and spits them out. They’ve got so much money they can just throw it around in hopes four years down the road it pays off, they couldn’t give a damn if most players make it or not. Just keep business moving.

Cal has an invested interested to see these guys perform. He’s also emotionally attached, he wants them to have a solid career. He’s also, basically, the minor league authority on what it takes to go, make it, and prosper. Way more so than some scout and GM who nobody even knows their names.

I think you’re slightly off, more or less just applying more to your POV than is really there.

In some cases I think it’s ok. With the players you named? Nah, there’s nothing they need to hear that they won’t already know. Just focus and listen to Cal. Simplify your path as much as possible and stay in the gym. A scout or GM doesn’t have the answer to your issues, that’s found on the court during hours and hours of pounding out your craft. I think it says a lot about Hagans not messing with the nonsense and just returning to work on what he knows he needs to do and trying to win a championship along the way. We need to stop encouraging this kind of thing full steam.

It's the NBA that is allowing this. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

EJ was a McDonalds All-American with POTENTIAL, which seems to be bigger than any other thing to the NBA now. So, why get upset? It's how things go at UK now. With Cal signing a LIFETIME contract, you better get used to it.

Honestly, I am not upset. I am already use to it, but it is a topic for discussion, plus I will never like it, just tolerate it.

This is it in a nutshell.

I would just add that Cal is CONSTANTLY trying to get these kids to put where they are in life in perspective and not allow the "noise" to influence their ultimate goal. Some listen and flourish, others don't and pay the price.

And btw, and this isn’t to brag, but I actually coached, played college ball, and have professional athletes in my family. There’s a lot more to this than just what’s on paper or opinions formed from using basic logic. Being a great athlete isn’t logical, it takes way more than that. And I only say this because I do have experience in the area past what I’ve just seen on TV or read on ESPN.

And it starts with a mindset that you will simply out work everyone and not worry about the prize because you’re determined to work the process. And if the process is that you aren’t ready, you’ll know it and won’t need to hear it. Michael Jordan is a great example.

Too many think this is just coach speak when in fact it’s a stone cold reality that any successful athlete will tell you is correct.

236 players declared last year.

Over 100 already this year.

So yeah, we are seeing 50. Way more than 50.

Nice try though. Another sparkling take.

Predicting a transfer.
Yeah, I'm kinda thinking that as well. Maybe they'll announce it tomorrow, over Easter weekend, to minimize the impact.

If he does come back I do think he can take a big step forward next year and really help the Cats.

It's all about getting his name out there with the scouts since he didn't do it with his play this year. That way when he avgs 8pts and 5rbs next year, he's gone.

This is Cal setting up his next years draft night. Maybe he can get 8 to go next year.

Ahhhhhh the Kentucky effect in full force! Lol

I think so too. He just needs to play more minutes and learn by playing without fear of being yanked. If he fouls out, so be it, but Nick has a world of potential.

I’m not worried about foul trouble with Richards. I wouldn’t mind if he got more fouls. I’d like to see him put a body on somebody every time a shot went up. Nothing harder to watch than an athletic 7 footer get outrebounded by 6’8” guys.

And Cal goes with them too! Because his dream, also, has been to win an NBA championship.

As far as Kentucky, well sht I forgot that’s why we’re here!

I’m sure he’d like to win an NBA title but if that were his dream, he would have left in 2014. It was right there for the taking.

Hopefully he doesn’t play more than 7 minutes a game and we don’t have to worry about foul trouble

If WannabeRICHards is getting 20 or more we’re screwed before we start.

Hard to put much faith in the guy, but I’m pulling for him. Honestly will still be somewhat surprised if he’s on the roster next year.

They can now get an NCAA certified agent to help them through the draft process, and still return to school.

As far as NBA teams, they keep extensive databases on hundreds of players. They would love to evaluate a player like EJ, not only to see where he stands today, but to create a baseline for the sake of comparison if they bring him in again at a future date.

Quit making so many solid comments. I feel as thought I’m teetering on stalker status with the amount of likes I’ve been giving you lately. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

WOW. don't even have the words right now...just un frigg'n'believable. My Gawd are we all taking crazy pills!? WTF does EJ think he has to offer the NBA after the season he just had? I can see an evaluator as he walks in...."Umm, sir, I know who you are. I love your height but.....please give it another shot and MAYBE just MAYBE we'll see each other again at this time next year but i'm not holding my breathe." WOW!

You have absolutely no idea what the F you are talking about brother Lol...
