So you think Tariq didn't do his job while he was here? I guess it depends on what you think is the job of the recruiting coordinator. Build relationships, convince kids to come here - no, he didn't do that. Coordinate recruiting visits and recruiting events. Tariq did that very well. Barthel did not.

I guess if you look at his job in its most basic form it's hard to argue against your point.

It is so hard to know if these guys did their jobs or not. It certainly seemed that EJ got a ton of high level kids on campus. But it did seem that the events may not have been as organized as they should be. But how much if that is on EJ or others...
Tariq? No idea on him. There did seem to be some issues on his way out.
I like Mantz being here anyway. As for EJ at PSU- it's not the end of the world but it doesn't help us with the 4-5 kids they target here each year.

And I'm laughing that some of you still get the joke that the 2nd post must be a "so screwed" post

Perhaps EJ Barthel should have pulled and read a Sandusky thread from our extensive collection. That might have discouraged him from taking the PSU job.

Remember when the WSJ called his hiring at RU a "secret weapon"?
https://www.wsj.com/articles/tired-...uits-rutgers-hires-a-secret-weapon-1412296894

How did our secret weapon work out?
It was such a secret that no one even knew it was a weapon.

You're right, nothing. Just like Chris Ash so far.

Melton, Clark, Fogg, Fatukasi, Bordner, et al are not "nothing".

Making sure student athletes are students again is not "nothing."

No one getting arrested is not "nothing."

Restoring honor back into the program is not "nothing."

..... some of you still have no clue what Flood did to this program and the monumental task of just getting back to respectability.

You can sugarcoat it all you want, but what I saw was a team that could barely line up and play football. There was much more talent on the roster than a 2-10 team that lost by 78 points at home on national TV. When we donate our hard-earned money to a program that Schiano successfully rebuilt, we should also refuse to tolerate a return to the Terry Shea era. That's what last year was. There's a difference between pressing "reset" and being a national laughingstock, my friend.

Still think Fleck would have been a solid hire at RU along with his already estblished NJ recruiting ties,he has a personality that the media follows, which would have worked well for RU in this nyc/nj market and bigger the fact..he wins games..
EJ Barthel had the NJ connections for recruiting..just was hamstrung by the dud named Flood ..he got numerous local four stars onto campus but Flood was to busy going home by 5pm daily to close deals or to follow up on recruits.

lol at "he got 4-stars in campus" so what??!! You and I could do that.

um no..getting the kids onto the campus is part of building the relationship..someone..in most major programs, its the head coach, has to be the closer, like Schiano did..
Flood was too busy making sure he was home for dinner...
Is Ash a closer? this class should let us know alot more.

No offense, but if you really could do what a professional recruiting coordinator does for a living, I seriously doubt you'd be making your 87,190th post on a message board.

Let me ask you something, when Flood won 9 games in his first year, did you think he was a good coach?

So, your basis for how good a coach is, is in game decision making?
That's a major part of it, but of course there are other very important aspects, particularly in college when recruiting/compliance are part of the job. Either way, I don't think it's possible to honestly look at last season and not have some concerns about Ash. It's one thing to rebuild; it's another to be an embarrassment.

It really bothered me throughout the season that Ash didn't identify the offense's biggest strength as our running backs and insisted on emphasizing the pass instead. Made absolutely no sense with so much weakness at the QB position and WR after Grant got injured.

I am not okay with a return to the Terry Shea era and you shouldn't be either. I'm giving Coach Ash this year to show improvement and potential like Coach Pikiell did with basketball. If that doesn't happen, he will lose my support and I suspect many other RU fans will feel the same way.

If you have a repeat in terms of performance on the field this year as last year, I would agree that there would be major red flags with Ash as a coach. But that is for this year.

Last year, there was so much clean up that had to be done that it is simply short sighted to just look at the results on the field. Establishing the new culture was a major part of that. It's the reason why certain kids, who may have flourished under the previous regime, may have been limited in PT minutes. Wins and losses may have been sacrificed, for the purpose of establishing the culture. In addition, I also still don't think people understood the gravity of the talent void that was being created under Flood. While Flood was here, I kept repeating over and over again in these message boards - wait till you see what happens once Schiano's players graduate. And lo and behold, folks are actually surprised.

Please don't get me wrong. I am not 100% sure myself if Ash can get the job done here. I do see enough evidence that suggests he knows very much what he is doing - beyond just wins and losses. He is establishing the foundation that could eventually lead to success - whether that happens is still a question. However, even if it doesn't, at least his successor will have an easier time because the foundation was already laid. In many respects, Ash is very similar to Schiano.

no,Flood won with probably the best group of talent Schiano had gathered. Elmer Flood still managed to bungle the Va Tech game off the charts, which was the start of him showing his true colors. Two straight losses with NFL(Schiano) talent and what should have been a BCS level bowl..Ash hasnt recruited anywhere near Schianos level yet,so that comparision is too early and void.

slow down here, GS wasn't Spurrier with 'all that talent' either. Flood did ok but was not a HC caliber coach we needed. He should not have been name HC but the school had no plan when GS left us at the 11th hour. All the people that suckle at the feet of the almight GS should remember the harm he did to us leaving like that after assuring the school of no such desire, the administration for not having a back up plan and a process in place that removed political considerations for selecting a hc (hardest part I know)

While the 2006 team was better overall, there's absolutely no way that Flood team should have lost either the Louisville game or the bowl game that year. Absolutely unbelievable losses that shouldn't have happened.

Sorry, but I don't agree with this. 2016 recruiting is on par or about the same level as some of Schiano's best recruiting years in 2007, 2009, 2011 or 2012. Considering the circumstances, I thought Ash did a great job selling - he essentially sold ice to eskimos.

2017 NJ kids are a little tougher because of the 2 win record. Unfortunately, many of these kids (mostly on the offensive side of the ball) are not big picture thinkers and cannot see past wins and losses. But it's fine - we will end up with stud out of staters instead. We'll take the kids who want to be here. I suspect that some of these NJ kids will probably regret it later on.

agree somewhat, but untill RU starts winning games and getting players drafted into the league, winning super bowls, then RU program hasnt regained its talent level that clearly dropped off after Schiano left. LOL at posters who have quickly thrown aside "Fence the garden" mantra and now looking for greener pastures"out of state' if current staff cant recruit Jersey..come on..the out of state hidden gems dont know RU won 2 games last year?

I'm not sure how long Barthel has been at Temple but Temple has been out recruiting us. Temple would've destroyed us if we played last year. Temple has been getting guys drafted in the NFL. And Temple has been developing players despite having way less resources and fan support than we do.

Barthel was hired in September 2016 by Temple. The 2017 recruiting class is "his."

http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/i...es_ej_barthel_as_recr.html#incart_river_index

Despite finishing 10-4 and winning its first American Athletic Conference championship last fall, Temple's 18-player recruiting class was rated 118th nationally and last in the American Athletic Conference in February.
:joy:

Temple's 2016 class was ranked #60 with 25 recruits and average star rating of 2.56. RU's was #77 with 18 recruits and an average star rating of 2.44.
Temple's 2015 class was ranked #73 with 20 recruits and average star rating of 2.50. RU's was #54 with 25 recruits and an average star rating of 2.60.
Temple's 2014 class was ranked #59 with 29 recruits and average star rating of 2.52. RU's was #58 with 26 recruits and an average star rating of 2.50.
Temples 2013 class was ranked #84 with 21 recruits and average star rating of 2.33. RU's was #44 with 22 recruits and an average star rating of 2.82.
I would hardly call the above "outrecruiting us" by any stretch of the imagination. Matt Rhule was indisputably a better X's and O's coach that the guy that used to be our HC, which is plainly evident when you look at our 39-0 against Penn State and Temple's 34-27 against the same team.

Maybe not out recruiting us. They had an easier schedule and better coach. But couldn't the poor recruiting class be due to the Head Coach leaving for Waco after the season and not EJ?

Yes and yes.
On recruiting- the factor hidden in our numbers is the number of players who left the program. If we regraded the 2012-2015 classes, we would likely grade lower.

The thing on Barthel is he never really got a chance to demonstrate if he can recruit well. Everyone spoke highly of him-he was deemed a "secret weapon" when we hired him. But what did he have to sell at RU under the former coach or at Temple? Kind of hard to sell turd sandwiches.
Frankly, whoever you put at schools like Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State will look great because those are the top B1G East schools elite recruits want to go to. Barthel will merely be putting icing on the cake. Don't see why they need him there, but maybe Franklin has something up his sleeve?

Let's face it , Matt Rhule was/is a much better Head Coach than Kyle Flood , by a mile, and ran a much better program. Which is why he was in demand and now has a much bigger contract, and Kyle Flood was out of work last year, and lucky to be given a job by the Falcons.
Plus, I'm sure Rhule gave EJ Barthel a good recommendation to Franklin.

He is also going there at a great time. If Penn State repeats what they did last year or make it to the playoffs, he'll have a cushy job because the program will sell itself, he'll just be there to close the deal.
