He had been struggling with his sister's death throughout his time at Duke, so the coaching staff got together with him and determined that it might be best for him to take some time away from basketball to give himself time to grieve and mourn over his sister's death, so he took a year off from playing basketball then returned to the team the following season.
It's no coincidence Duke's recruiting blew up once Capel was hired. Capel does K's dirty work.
K may not lie to players about their PT or negatively recruit against other schools, but I wouldn't put anything past Capel.
I remember reading the Duke boards just a couple of years ago and there fans were fretting about not being able to close out on anyone anymore. That all culminated with the Harrison Barnes recruitment.
They hire Capel and suddenly they can now just cherry pick the Top 2-3 Nike kids every year? And make no mistake, there was really no contest with anyone else for Giles and Tatum.

You guys are really misunderstanding the Dook situation. Thornton's dad wanted Derryck to be the starter next year so he saw the writing on the wall when Dook bought Jackson in and it was becoming likely that Grayson would return. Derryck's dad basically forced him to transfer because he wanted his son to play more than 10-15 minutes on a team.
At any rate, Grayson will be Dook's PG next year. One of my friends who's subscribed to one of their premium boards told me that this is how their starting lineup will most likely shake up next year:
