He can be quite annoying but like Bergman he came around at an important time. They both helped grow the ESPN brand and Vitale especially college basketball

Exactly. Like all human beings he can be a huge annoyance, but if you miss his excellence that's your issue.

The early 80’s and 90’s he helped grow ESPN and college basketball. If you weren’t alive I get it but if you don’t get his importance in the growth of college basketball. His act has got old and it did back then but he broadcast and played to the blue bloods to get people to watch the teams that were excellent back then. In turn other teams started recruiting better to be part of a tremendous growing sport.
He helped grow college basketball just as Berman, Ley and Patrick grew sportcenter, baseball tonight and the entire ESPN brand.
I respect your thoughts on him but something tells me without guys like these we would still be on tv once a month

Hell back in the day he was as big as Gameday is for college football the last several years. Eventually the act of these color commentators gets old and it’s time to retire.
Berman was phenomenal in the 80’s. Nicknames and highlights were the best but acts got old but I feel so sorry for the youngster of today not getting to rush home and watch Sportcenter highlights every night.
A lot of things are so much better today but the 80’s ESPN era was electric.

And don’t get me started on so many peoples thoughts in the day about Nighttracks on TBS and actual music videos on MTV. I may be old but damnitt y’all I had a blast and I will appreciate all those memories!
Even though he is irritating Vitale let’s me hold on to a bit of that

Didn't have cable in our house until 89. Stayed with a friend around 87 or so who had ESPN and got my first taste of Big Monday and Sports Center. It was like the first time I used Dale's.

Now he’s telling the nation we should have retained Moorehead. I’m ready for Dicky V to retire.

He’s 80 and not very good nowadays, but ESPN has very few good basketball commentators period.

He slid a few years back. He said earlier tonight that carter has been great for us all year coming off the bench. He is going after the idea that dead air is bad air.

Look y’all even Budweiser changes as campaigns. ESPN’s weakness is they didn’t realize that they had the viewership until it was too late.
Sports are supposed to be exciting and fun instead of toning things down they tried to get too political while keeping the old acts of the 80’s in some ways.
There was a time and a place for Vitale and he came around at a perfect time. The problem was they never tried to tone his enthusiasm down when it was time. He knows the game of basketball but now he can’t let go of his cartoon character image that was great for several years.

Gave an upvote but yet we have our irritating football, baseball, basketball equivalents. As much as some hate him just remember these games may never have been on. ESPN made sports. They did it right! We are at a point of overkill but if you don’t like the commentary you can use the radio broadcast with the tv.

DV was good tonight and complimentary of our players, program, and coach. Certainly he can get on one’s nerves at times. His remark that we should not have fired Moorhead was “tongue in cheek” imo. I have always liked him because of his life away from the court. He does a lot of positive things and has a great approach to life.

Vitale has never agreed with a coach being fired. He was very complimentary tonight. Not so much when we were behind!! Haha He is irritating too many but I respect it but I also respect the many who hate it. It is cool to me in small doses because I remember the old days when he first started.
The thing is I’m cool with everyone’s opinion. Young or old. It’s all good y’all I just respect the guys who got us to the point we are on tv every game. With that comes less than adequate tv crews. But I can mute.
End of the day I’m a 56 year old drinking a Natty Light tonight feeling nostalgic. And I wouldn’t yell at the younger generation to get off my lawn! Hail State!

Yes, his brand helped build college basketball 30+ years ago.
That doesnt mean he has a lifetime pass to annoy the **** out of almost all fanbases. It doesnt mean he has a lifetime pass to ramble on over and over about coaches or teams in other conferences that have 0 to do with the game in progress.

Andy Kennedy is a star. Humor but not over the top. I get the irritation of Vitale, always been there but I love hearing it sometimes because someday it will be gone and I honestly believe he loves college basketball and I’ll always love his irritating ways for that

I totally agree but tell me the great color guys of today.

- Fran fraschilla is elite and the big12 is lucky to have him so often.
- Jay Bilas has an excellent mix of knowledge, humor, and delivery. He is wicked smart and gets too 'letter of the law's at times since he is a lawyer, but at the same time he is technically right when he does that.
- Bill Raftery is ONIONS!
- Dan Shulman is a play by play guy, but deserves a mention since he comments too.
Robie Hummel does a good job of analyzing in real time and breaking scenarios down.
- Brooke Weisbrod was a super accomplished athlete, knows her stuff, and never dominated broadcasts.
- Andy Kennedy is good.
- Dan dakich is a douche and trolls hard which is lame, but he is strong in understanding the game and does well with simplifying what is happening on the court. I mention him because even he is better than Vitale.

There are more I like, but I'm not typing more.
Then there are so many more who are perfectly fine and not named because they allow the game to be the focus of the broadcast.

Vitale refuses to let the game be the focus. He is constantly pitching his own cancer agenda(even if it's a good one), continually talks about teams that arent playing and arent even on the schedule of either team playing, and gushes over coaches to an absurd amount.

The only person I want to hear less than Vitale is that ego-bag Walton.

I always enjoy your takes but what I get from it is you don’t like the old school excitement. Bilas is a homer from hell, and Rafferty is where he is just like Vitale. Shulmann is awesome.
Like I said I know Vitale is irritating but I love his passion for the game and a cause he is paid to continue to preach. All I’m saying is as a old guy I can look past his irritating emotions because I respect his passion. No hate! I’m old and respect your thoughts. The thing is we are seeing the games and people you talk about because of people like Vitale.
I respect and love the game! My first true love since listening to Caywood Ledford do radio broadcast as a youngster in the early 70s. All I’m saying is to remember the guys that brought us to this point! Much respect!

By the way I’m a Fraschilla fan but Kennedy keeps it real. Great insight with humor. No arguments from me on your thoughts though

Jay Bilas is an insufferable douche. Yes, he knows basketball but my God, is he pompous. Fran Frachilla is the gold standard on ESPN. Sean Farnham is also very good. Dakich is OK, but comes off as too negative a lot of the time. Much like Billy Packer used to be.
