Walling and Downs are guys I think might have immediate impact. A little concerned about Downs competition level in High School, but I would assume he has seen good pitching in summer ball and his athletic ability should help him (99.93% of recorded 60 times by PG this year.)

As for current dogs. All should sign and nobody unexpected was drafted (I was a little worried someone might take a flyer on Stinnett, Hancock, Preston Johnson, or Brandon Smith.) Congrats boys and go tear it up in the pros.

Fair to say, no real surprises with current players or signees. One may be that Walling is coming to campus?

Not exactly chalk, because McCants got scooped up a couple of rounds earlier than I was hoping... Some projections had him in the 5th which may have made coming to school more attractive. I am guessing Walling put the word out he wanted top 50 $ or something. From what I have read, he has all the right stuff, but has effort in his delivery that effects command. Hopefully we can help him work out the kinks. I fully expect him to be the Saturday starter next season unless we have some other lefty that can get into the mid 90's deep into games.

Oh yeah. Hootie probably doesn't get drafted next year either with 40 rounds unless he finds some extra velo. MLB is not conducive to a guy throwing in the mid 80's from a conventional arm slot.

That's okay though. He has been a highly effective college pitcher and while I would like to see some of our higher upside guys take the weekend starter roles (Sims, Walling, Cade Smith, Fristoe) I would not count Harding out. He is a competitive MOFO and I am damn glad to have him back.

Hooty will be an interesting case. He was a senior who I’m sure has now graduated. He doesn’t strike me as a guy with much pro potential because of his velocity and age. I just don’t see any path to a big signing bonus for him at any point. So he can either try to get on with on with a pro club as an undrafted player which will probably be hard to do. It’s $400k after taxes for an 18 year old. You can enjoy $150k of it. And in 8 years, the $250k you invest will be worth $500k at the age of 26. It’s not “let you retire at age 40 money.” But it’s a life changing amount of money that will give you a lifetime of financial stability if you manage it right. And for many, this might be the one opportunity that payday is sitting there for the taking. So yes, for many it is very much worth it.

I would expect the same. The chances of making it with his velocity seems low enough that it makes a lot more sense to come back and enjoy playing a major role on a very good team. I really expect him to be a starter next year assuming he doesn't have an injury or develop some mental issues, but if we have an embarrassment of riches and he comes back strong and is not one of the starters, I would think he'd have to be the first long reliever guy we go to each weekend. I think we'll be in good shape if he's the starter, but if he does end up in long relief because we have three better starters than him, then I think you can pencil us in as a national seed again next year and a favorite to make it to Omaha.

She looks really good until you wake up the next morning and see her with the makeup smeared off her face. College baseball, in particular SEC pitching, can bring focus to the beer googles real quick. McCants is a high ceiling athletic guy and the hope is he can learn a good approach at the plate and become a big leaguer. Well after 2 years in the SEC, it doesn't matter how good he looks, most of the time its not going to be a good as he does today.

And yes. $678K (Split into 2 payments if I remember correctly and taxed in the state you are assigned so let's call it $400k total) is life changing money for most people. Of course, thats just my opinion, the guy that re-upped for 2 more years in the military whiled deployed in Iraq for $7500.

Agree. Expecting to improve upon 3rd round in two years is a huge risk. And yes, $680k before taxes is life changing money for a 19 year old.

Pretty much sounded like McCants was going to go pro if he got drafted anywhere in the Top 10 rounds. Dude just wasn't interested in going to college. His brother wouldn't be at OM if he had gotten drafted in the 5 round draft last year.

Keeping in mind minor league players make beans, so it will also serve as money to live on until he either makes the bigs and gets the MLB minimum, or has to go get a real job.

But at that age living on 50k a year should be easy…stash some cash to live on a few months at a time and invest the rest, pulling to live on as needed until you get to MLB. Fizzle out in 5 years? Fine, but should still have a significant financial head start at 23/24 to go do whatever is next.

Yeah and I’m not sure his brother is thrilled to be in college, as it is. He was dynamic for the first 75% or so of season, and then horrid the rest of the way. But, it’s been said they’ve been dealing with some personal stuff within the family. No clue what, nor do I care to know. But he’s a draft eligible sophomore after this upcoming season, and I would have to imagine he’s gone after that. It may just be his personality, but he’s never looked like he gives a ****. He’s just immensely talented.

They do make beans. But how much does an 18 year old kid trying to bust his butt to make the big leagues really need to spend? I’m sure they get about $25k/yr salary playing ball. You can take $150k from your bonus, buy a swanky $50k vehicle. And then use the remaining $100k to supplement your salary an extra $15yr for the next 7 years to see if you can make The Show or not. $40k/yr is not a bad income for a 19 year old minor league ball player with a paid off ride.

You’ve watched a lot more rebel baseball than I have but I remember seeing him get excited about teammate’s hitting home runs or doing something positive a few times. I did notice his average drop a good bit but chalked that up to the freshman wall. He does look like the quiet type though.
