They are a perfect fit for each other. Their HC is a hype man and that kid has been nothing but hype in HS. Great upside, looks good in no pad camps but I have yet to see it on the field.

I assumed you were being a wise a**. My apologies if I was wrong.
I was also preparing for a certain poster to come in with the blushing emojis proclaiming gloom and doom for RU and their need for recruiters with local ties. Perhaps I am missing it, but looking at PSU's coaches, none seem to have NJ-specific ties. Am I missing something? You know what is drawing recruits to Penn State? Winning, duh.
2-10 is like an overweight, zit-faced dunce. Not going to get a lot of action with that.

Take it for what it's worth but I heard from a family who has a son playing at NJ Catholics that the kids want PSU offers and aren't really looking at RU now. I get that things can change but we've got a long way to go to get this turned around.

Why?
If you were offered to play for the 2016 B1G Champion or were on the cusp of such an offer, you would choose your home state school that went 2-10 and got blown out 4 times last year?

Maybe competing teams should have flown banner planes around their camp "We are . . . convicted!!!"

I've been to State College. I visited as a HS student. I hated it. There's your answer.

Face it, some little boys like a coach who puts on rap music right before they enter their office and is attracted to shower hijinks in the middle of nowhereville. We just can't compete with that package.

Yes, if not for EJ PSU would never have had a chance. If only Ash saw the light and kept EJ on staff we would have continued to reel in all those 4* recruits.
Now that's how a real fan named @Block R lays the smack down on a whiny fraud having an unfortunately similar name. There's no confusing you two.

Fair enough. But if I am a 4*, last year's performance might have a lot of sway. Funny though- Donald Bedell from Rumson-Fair Haven transferred out of Rutgers after 1 year to I believe North Dakota because he hated it in New Brunswick.

I talked to two different kids (not football players) who recently visited Georgia Tech--one hated it because it was in the middle of the city, and another loved it for the same reason. Different kids like different environments.

If I remember correctly Bedell wasn't cutting it on the field either.

RU hired EJ in early October 2014. He was deemed to be a "Secret Weapon" to reverse recruiting losses.

Parochial recruits or not, this has been true for 50 years. No revelation here.

The big difference is that top football players choose schools differently then your average student. We can pretend the choose schools based on academics, location, campus etc. in reality most base it off primarily on football. They may give lip service to those other factors but the football program drives the bus. Those factors come into play almost as tie breakers.

Penn State, even back in '96 as a HS junior, felt like a cult to me. We hopped back in the car after an hour on campus and drove home. I hated it.

Yes, but as noted above, there are lots of kids/players that don't like Rutgers so-called "urban" environment and like the wide open space in a place like Happy Valley. But I also noted that the 2016 B1G championship to a 4* recruit is a hell of lot more attractive than a 2-10 record. But EJ Barthel must have really had a huge role in this . [laughing]

Wait a minute: EJ Barthel was responsible for our 2-10 record? So Drew Mehringer really was a victim?

How you doin'!

I don't want to disparage EJ. Let's not forget, he was a Jersey kid who stayed home and represented us on the field. I also think he was a bit hamstrung by Flood during his tenure here as Recruiting Coordinator. But the notion that we're losing 4* Jersey kids to PSU because they hired EJ in a similar role is just plain idiotic. Kids don't commit to a school because of the Recruiting Coordinator, period.

Yeah, my post was not meant to disparage EJ. He went from selling crap sandwiches under the former head coach to selling ice cream sandwiches at PSU. Your alter ego BlockR is too dense to realize that it is not as simple as he posits in his posts. The fact of the matter is we have multiple people on our staff with strong NJ and local ties, while the sole person PSU has is Barthel.

It's considered on of the most beautiful campuses in the country for a reason.

Madison is probably the only I ever seen that might top our main campus.

You had me until you said it is one of the most beautiful campuses. My wife is a PSU alum and we are are often. I like the school and campus. It is not even close to one of the most beautiful.
