I have heard from no less than 10 big donors and supporters who are canceling tickets and pledges for gifts, some changing their estate bequest language to remove Rutgers,'' one Rutgers insider said. "It’s really bad.''"
Because he knows he will never placate the diehard Schiano supporters if he doesn't hire him, but by taking a lot of time and acting like he is working really hard on getting a deal done with Schiano and then using his mouthpiece McMurphy to get his spin out first that Schiano acted like he didn't really want the job, Hobbs figured he could retain the support of the "independents" in the middle.I think Schiano overreached BUT how did Hobbs let this negotiation drag out for so long with nearly the entire fan base (including the big donors) salivating over the return of Greg only to come up short? I don’t see how Hobbs survives this long term and if that’s the case, he shouldn’t be making the hire.
But, but Hobbs is a really good fundraiser! Listen Hobbs - if big money donors are backing out, your claim to fame of securing pledges for the B1G Build fund means squat.People don't actually read very well, so here's the excerpt from the article:
"As the Rutgers athletics director of fundraising earlier this decade, Doug Dolan helped broker six-figure donations and was instrumental in a privately funded initiative to launch the Scarlet Knights’ online streaming network. As the president of the Rutgers Touchdown Club, Dolan sparked grassroots interest in the football program and raised money that directly supported the team.
Dolan has multiple Rutgers degrees, and he says “some of the proudest moments of my life’’ involved attending Scarlet Knights football games as a season-ticket holder for 35 years.
On Sunday, shortly after negotiations to bring back Greg Schiano as the Scarlet Knights football coach ended without a deal, Dolan sent a simple two-word email to Rutgers’ current fundraising team:
“I’m done,’’ it read.
“I’m giving up my tickets. I’m giving up all my giving. And I’m taking Rutgers out of my will,’’ Dolan told NJ Advance Media. “We’re really in a bad situation with the football program. And while it is possible that someone else over time can fix it, Greg is the only person who knows what needs to be done. He’s done it in New Jersey and he would’ve immediately put fans back in the seats, which would start to turn the football program’s bleeding financial fortunes around. Whoever they turn to I hope he is successful; I don’t wish anyone failure. But anybody other than Greg coming into this situation I don’t think will have any clue what they’re in for.’’
Dolan wasn’t alone in his disappointment that the reunion between Rutgers and Schiano failed to materialize. NJ Advance Media interviewed nearly a dozen boosters, fans, and former players who said they planned to protest — with their wallets — Rutgers’ inability to come to terms with the coach who took the Scarlet Knights to six bowl games in his final seven years before departing for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012.
“I have heard from no less than 10 big donors and supporters who are canceling tickets and pledges for gifts, some changing their estate bequest language to remove Rutgers,'' one Rutgers insider said. "It’s really bad.''"
That’s an interesting theory and, if true, I think Hobbs seriously miscalculated.Because he knows he will never placate the diehard Schiano supporters if he doesn't hire him, but by taking a lot of time and acting like he is working really hard on getting a deal done with Schiano and then using his mouthpiece McMurphy to get his spin out first that Schiano acted like he didn't really want the job, Hobbs figured he could retain the support of the "independents" in the middle.
If that's the case he 1) miscalculated badly and 2) has not been acting in the University's best interests.Because he knows he will never placate the diehard Schiano supporters if he doesn't hire him, but by taking a lot of time and acting like he is working really hard on getting a deal done with Schiano and then using his mouthpiece McMurphy to get his spin out first that Schiano acted like he didn't really want the job, Hobbs figured he could retain the support of the "independents" in the middle.
Barchi is clueless when it comes to athletics but if the mega donors are truly united (of this I’m not sure) then even Barchi can’t look the other way.
If it happens, and it should if the big donors are fleeing, then he'll be "firing" his 3rd AD in 6 years amid controversy. Inconceivable.there is no bus that Barchi will not drive to run someone over, if he feels he can shift all the blame to someone else including Pat, he will rev that sucker up
Hobbs had one job. Get Schiano to sign on the line that is dotted. If Greg was overreaching, he needed to find the common ground necessary to get the deal done, not draw a line in the sand and walk away. It's clear there was no plan and no sense of urgency. Hobbs has lost the donors, alumni and fan base. He has to go.
Or people that saw that Schiano didn’t run a clean program when he had oversight, so demanding no oversight years after screwing the school over and dumping us with Flood late is not worth an AD bowing down toAt this point the only people supporting Hobbs are those who thought he was a cool dean at Seton Hall Law or those who truly don’t appreciate what it takes to win in the B1G.
I have no proof, but an argument for it seems like Rutgers focused on the timing of getting their spin out first, coincidentally waiting until Sunday after the last FB home game was played, even though Hobbs was presented with Schiano's counteroffer (and knew he was ending the negotiation at that point) days earlier. That’s an interesting theory and, if true, I think Hobbs seriously miscalculated.

ABSOLUTELY.Because he knows he will never placate the diehard Schiano supporters if he doesn't hire him, but by taking a lot of time and acting like he is working really hard on getting a deal done with Schiano and then using his mouthpiece McMurphy to get his spin out first that Schiano acted like he didn't really want the job, Hobbs figured he could retain the support of the "independents" in the middle.
There are thousands of students that could benefit from the level of energy and devotion these donors have, and the money that was going to to go to athletics. Disappointing that football is the only thing they care about. Some amazing things happening in those new academic buildings...
Many donors, including the major ones, donate to both academics and athletics.Unfortunately, you are missing the point. They don’t only care about athletics, but athletic success creates pride and loosens purse strings. They go hand-in-hand.
oh come on, you know we continue to redefine rock bottom...Stunning indeed...I thought we had reached rock bottom...well, we found a new layer...
It truly is. Sad and stunning. This is a stunning read.
Hey new best friend! The Fire Hobbs Hiring Schiano movement is gaining steam! Time for everyone to jump onboard.
Another successful TKR hook-up...all because of RU trials and tribulations!Hey new best friend! And by the way, I'll match your pledge on trolling weather threads by agreeing to not give you any grief over certain local political issues. We can keep our arguments over national politics, though - that's just fun...
900 people have now signed the petition to can Hobbs. The tidal wave is growing!
His job isn’t to hire Greg Freaking Schiano. It’s to hire the best coach under acceptable terms.Hobbs had one job. Get Schiano to sign on the line that is dotted. I would never have thought it possible to lose that guy. When you lose Doug Dolan, you have lost the strongest of the Scarlet base.
Keep it rolling best buddy! I sent in my ticket cancellation email this morning. I was speaking to someone about club tickets, so I sent him a message as well.Hey new best friend! And by the way, I'll match your pledge on trolling weather threads by agreeing to not give you any grief over certain local political issues. We have sponsored an athletic scholarship for the past 8 years and have 2 more to go on our current commitment. Between our contribution and matching by my employer, for a short while, we’ve provided at least $70K to our school over these 8 years. My wife and I and a son are alum. We currently have 8 football season tickets, 2 Scarlet lot passes, and until recently 2 men’s and women’s basketball season tickets. We’ve watched this program since Frank Burns to today.
But today after watching the program crater I think we are, in large measure, done. I sincerely doubt that after our current scholarship commitment is completed we will continue it. While the scholarship is for an Olympic sport only, we did that because we felt that the money-generating sports were well-funded, and the Olympic sports programs needed some help. It also took some pressure off the Athletic Department where Olympic sports get crumbs.
We are not taking a position on whether the AD stays or goes, or that GS should be hired. Our disappointment is that once again Rutgers is demonstrating that it continues to play small ball while wanting to look like a big time program. And we will remain laughingstock in college football. It looks as though our shelf life was 150 years.
Furthermore now was the time to make this happen. Remember, the school is searching for a new president and there is no guarantee the new leader will have any interest in sports. There are no guarantees we’ll be able to hire a coach in the future with dollars even close to what we’ve imagining. We are in bad shape folks for the long-term.
This is a mess of epic proportions. The school needs to decide whether it wants to stay in the Big 10 or scrape the ground and ask for a non-P5 conference to take us in. As for us - we’re done.
Now we know. Hobbs wanted nothing to do with Schiano. He wants to select from many candidates once the season is over.. so he timed these fake negotiations to get him near the end of the season where he can take some tie off during bowl season to "assess" and research his options.
When Greg Brown, Jeff Towers, Run Garutti, and Doug Dolan all say "hire Schiano" his job is to hire Schiano. End of Story. When Ash was fired the first name I brought up was Mike Leach, so I wasn't the Schiano or Bust guy. You, however, are clearly a "Never Schianoer."His job isn’t to hire Greg Freaking Schiano. It’s to hire the best coach under acceptable terms.
Some of you guys would want him to be President of the school if you could.
Hobbs is guilty until he proves himself innocent of this blunder. #FireHobbsHey new best friend! And by the way, I'll match your pledge on trolling weather threads by agreeing to not give you any grief over certain local political issues.
