Because he knows he will never placate the diehard Schiano supporters if he doesn't hire him, but by taking a lot of time and acting like he is working really hard on getting a deal done with Schiano and then using his mouthpiece McMurphy to get his spin out first that Schiano acted like he didn't really want the job, Hobbs figured he could retain the support of the "independents" in the middle.
But, but Hobbs is a really good fundraiser! Listen Hobbs - if big money donors are backing out, your claim to fame of securing pledges for the B1G Build fund means squat.
That’s an interesting theory and, if true, I think Hobbs seriously miscalculated.
If that's the case he 1) miscalculated badly and 2) has not been acting in the University's best interests.
Nobody decent will want to touch this job now. It has become toxic.

If it happens, and it should if the big donors are fleeing, then he'll be "firing" his 3rd AD in 6 years amid controversy. Inconceivable.
Hobbs didn't have the emotional intelligence to get the job done.
Many on this board defended Hobbs's big ego act when he called a reporter "f—— scum." If a $15 an hour checkout clerk at a supermarket said that to a customer, they would be fired instantly.

I have no proof, but an argument for it seems like Rutgers focused on the timing of getting their spin out first, coincidentally waiting until Sunday after the last FB home game was played, even though Hobbs was presented with Schiano's counteroffer (and knew he was ending the negotiation at that point) days earlier.
Also, the RU spin was heavy on the "he might not even want the job" angle in a Nov 24 article when he came in for a Nov 5 meeting obviously interested enough in the job to have done work on players.

There are thousands of students that could benefit from the level of energy and devotion these donors have, and the money that was going to to go to athletics. Disappointing that football is the only thing they care about. Some amazing things happening in those new academic buildings...

When Schiano was not hired within days.. or at least a couple weeks of firing Ash many here, myself included, loudly wondered what was up with that? People here doubted us.. give him time, they said. I think this shows we were right all along. Schiano was available and interested.. had been when Hobbs hired Ash. How could Hobbs fire Ash, mid-season, without having the Schiano deal already done?
Now we know. Hobbs wanted nothing to do with Schiano. He wants to select from many candidates once the season is over.. so he timed these fake negotiations to get him near the end of the season where he can take some tie off during bowl season to "assess" and research his options.
Unfortunately, you are missing the point. They don’t only care about athletics, but athletic success creates pride and loosens purse strings. They go hand-in-hand.

All Hobbs has to do is hold on and wait until Baylor losses to Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship game and then offer Rhule 10 years at $10 mil per year, pay the Baylor buyout, private jet, $250 mil new football facilities, $5 mil per year for his staff, and a job at Rutgers for his wife, and you have solved the problem. Rhule would have us in the Rose Bowl in 3 or 4 years and nobody would miss Greg Schiano. See, easy, no stress, all it would take is a little extra money.
His job isn’t to hire Greg Freaking Schiano. It’s to hire the best coach under acceptable terms.
Some of you guys would want him to be President of the school if you could.

We have sponsored an athletic scholarship for the past 8 years and have 2 more to go on our current commitment. Between our contribution and matching by my employer, for a short while, we’ve provided at least $70K to our school over these 8 years. My wife and I and a son are alum. We currently have 8 football season tickets, 2 Scarlet lot passes, and until recently 2 men’s and women’s basketball season tickets. We’ve watched this program since Frank Burns to today.
But today after watching the program crater I think we are, in large measure, done. I sincerely doubt that after our current scholarship commitment is completed we will continue it. While the scholarship is for an Olympic sport only, we did that because we felt that the money-generating sports were well-funded, and the Olympic sports programs needed some help. It also took some pressure off the Athletic Department where Olympic sports get crumbs.
We are not taking a position on whether the AD stays or goes, or that GS should be hired. Our disappointment is that once again Rutgers is demonstrating that it continues to play small ball while wanting to look like a big time program. And we will remain laughingstock in college football. It looks as though our shelf life was 150 years.
Furthermore now was the time to make this happen. Remember, the school is searching for a new president and there is no guarantee the new leader will have any interest in sports. There are no guarantees we’ll be able to hire a coach in the future with dollars even close to what we’ve imagining. We are in bad shape folks for the long-term.
This is a mess of epic proportions. The school needs to decide whether it wants to stay in the Big 10 or scrape the ground and ask for a non-P5 conference to take us in. As for us - we’re done.

When Greg Brown, Jeff Towers, Run Garutti, and Doug Dolan all say "hire Schiano" his job is to hire Schiano. End of Story. When Ash was fired the first name I brought up was Mike Leach, so I wasn't the Schiano or Bust guy. You, however, are clearly a "Never Schianoer."
Congrats. You got what you wanted. Better get your checkbook out because there are going to be massive cuts across the board now.
