Does the QB strategy make sense?

I get that Sims might be the best we have right now, but does that mean no one else gets a sniff?

Are they not getting a sniff because there is such a huge drop off after Sims? That's a scary thought for the future.

Right now with him we are pretty one dimensional.

I think you ride the guy that gives you the best chance to win. You just have to do it by playing to his strengths. Not sure we are doing that now.

He had 19 carries, so we did to a degree. The issue was we needed him to complete one more pass at the end of the game to get us in FG range, and he threw it to the other team. At some point, he is going to have to be able to complete a pass from the pocket.

You're preaching to the choir with me... I've always been about giving QB #2 a series or 2 in every game, especially if #1 is going to run often & get hit often in games.

If the QB run game is going to a big part of our offense it's imperative we get QB #2 into these next 3 games so we have 2 guys ready for conference play.

For the future we have to dip into the portal again at the end of the season. I just have come to the conclusion that the position will be average at best and this season is a rebuild.

Gonna be two more seasons before DK can take the reigns unless we feel he's the next coming of Tommy Frazier and can start as a True Freshman....

So the coaching staff needs to make this work with the QB's we have by proper play calling, training, getting a series or two in/experience & encouragement

I guess from now on I would never assume the current starter will be the starter next year. Too many guys that will be in the portal.

True and he did. But its going to have to be less complicated it appears and we need to target our best players. That means making them easily accessible. If teams are going to load the box, we don't need rocket science in the passing game to take advantage of it.

Truth be told (I hate that expression)...NU should have run sims more

They were dropping 7/8 guys...once those guys get their depth on their drops...he should just take off. It is a 3-4 yard gain if they make the tackle and if one guy misses it is a 10+ yard gain.

Agreed. It's all about the wins. Get them anyway you can. Whatever it takes it takes.

And that's the rub with not getting our RB's involved in the running game.

Sims had, what, 19 carries? more than all the RB's combined. Too many more and he's going to get broken in a hurry.

And so what...Right? Either way we are losing. Might as well get the milage while we can.

I get that, I do, but I don't think you can coach that way.

It would be like going to see Carrot Top and they took away his props.

Sims had a bad outing in the passing game, and in reality the offense has to play things out to see what works/doesn't work when the bullets are flying. It does seem like Sims can get yardage that keeps NU on schedule with down/distance at any time. Gabe was running with authority and even though Grant coughed the ball up, he seemed to have some rhythm as well. Get a game plan that takes advantage of the running talent and make sure Sims doesn't attempt a pass to a guy he's been staring at since the ball was snapped.

There were several plays that were predetermined QB runs. In that the fake on the zone read was literally for show. So even if the RB was the better read, we would have never seen the results

I think everyone expects them to load the box this weekend... so yeah, the young guys will have to step up and they'd better find a way to get those TE's in the game... DONU offense could end up looking like Minny did last week after the run was shut down

I think the key is the TE's. We have a mismatch with fidone and need to take advantage of it.

This is my feeling for now. 1 game, they actually called some pretty good plays but Sims blew it. How the staff adjusts is yet to be seen. I give them the benefit of the doubt until they prove they can't upgrade the position.

Rhule referred to the start of the game as feeling rushed. Starting the first drive of the season inside your own 1 is not conducive for developing an offensive rhythm. NU seems to move the ball rather easily on the ground, but poor decision making kept points off the board. Clean the latter part up and it could be an entertaining game Saturday.

In 2021 Sims had a 60% completion rate with 12 TDs and 7 interceptions and threw for almost 1500 yards. This shows that he is capable of decent QB play at the P5 level. Also, if you review his highlights, it's apparent that he has an NFL type of arm.
I believe he needs to be given more time to get use to the system and his receivers. If the staff can help him reduce turnovers, he could be a difference maker (in a positive way) in a number of our upcoming games (CU included).

I see that TO was a practice this week giving Rhule some advice. I hope we institute the option game with our big QB. We need to run clock and keep the buffs off of the field. That's BIG football and cu will pay the price.

14 points left of the field due to poor QB play on 2 plays.

Just alternate drives with him and HH and run it the exact same way

Went to youtube and watched highlights. On most of our pass highlights that we had he wasn't even on the field.
I’m wondering if he’s 100% mentally there with trusting his knee. That’s the last hurdle in the rehab. Every little twist or tweak replants that doubt on going full speed.

It was a close game on the road in a fairly hostile and noisy environment. We had the lead and our defense was doing well. I share your stance that the #2 should get some snaps. But in this situation I don't think you bench your QB who has 2 years of P5 experience. The game was winnable and Sims didn't false start twice and fumble.

However, Sims is their guy and if he keeps throwing picks and doesn't sit for Purdy or HH to get a chance, then we will know the statement that if you can't take care of the ball you can't play for us is BS.

No doubt. He is a physical specimen. I hope he can get it back and that we get him involved in the offense. No doubt that he could be an amazing asset.

Or he might just not be that good.. Just another miss in a long line of misses with this program. That's a possibility.

2 ACL tears is a LOT to overcome mentally. Considering that Sims seemed to have issues throwing it to the right guy I think it would be premature to judge Fidone.

gotta admit, my freudian radar went off with all the sniffing being mentioned in your post.. when was the last time you got a sniff? none of my business, but we could all probably use a refresher.. even us married guys. that is all. :)
