Do we take Cal for granted?

Since John Calipari took over Kentucky (2009-10), including the win over Providence on Friday, here are the most NCAA Tournament wins by program:

32 - Kentucky
32 - Kansas
31 - Duke
29 - North Carolina
28 - Gonzaga
24 - Michigan
23 - Villanova

The problem is most of those were from 2009-15 and I loved having Cal during that time. He was hungry.

Since losing to Wisconsin, he hasn’t been the same. To use Cal’s words against him, they broke his spirit.

No we don't, that's exactly where we should be with a bigger lead. We are the best in college basketball, don't accept less. Cal has to go, sorry. He is under achieving the last 8 years now. Time for a fresh start
Considering we haven’t won a tournament game in three years before Friday, you would think Kentucky would be lower on the list. I’m sure your tune would change if this team was to win it all this season…..

Cal needs to have a huge upswing, and soon. He's trended into the toilet over the last 3 years, and the only way he might get a "pause" in pressure is if he does something NOW and continues an upward swing. He can't stay our coach with this mediocre job he's doing.

Broken spirits be damned. He's got 9 million reasons to figure out how to get out of a funk of his own making.

Hard to answer for everyone but I will answer for myself with a big fat NO. We think Cal should give a damn about WINS and let the NBA be a side effect of WINNING. Does he recruit good/great players... YES, I think that is a fact we can all agree on. Does he get the most out of those players while at UK? I think that will be a mixed bag. The fact of the matter college basketball is about winning and losing. We are no longer the team with the most NCAA wins under Cals watch... also, I believe we were overtaken in NCAA Tourney wins (although that is hard to believe for me). These things should NOT have happened with the talent he gets. He gets this talent because he is a good recruiter AND above all, he is the University of Kentucky head coach. So, NO I don't feel we take him for granted as his contract will very much show (Lifelong Contract, WTF Mitch).

Certainly, no Local or SEC Coach or Team has done better than Cal and that includes Louisville and Rick Pitino, and the three teams that are close copied his one-and-done usage.

I think we definitely took his first 6 years for granted. That was an elite run that will be extremely difficult to replicate. But he set himself extremely high expectations and needs to get it done this year and/or next to get people fully back on board.

All it takes is one magical run. Kansas had numerous disappointments year after year and some of their fans were unhappy with Self, but then they won it all last year and everyone is happy again. Whether we think it’ll happen or not is a different discussion

7 years isn’t “ebb and flow”. It’s a trend.
This. Coaching trends are less like a sine wave and more like a bell curve. As if we just waited long enough, Denny Crum or Joe B. (God bless them) were going to turn it around.

It's actually Cal who takes UK for granted. Big time. He has for many years now.

I don’t think this is necessarily true because we were a Luke Mayo shot/John Higgins fiasco away from a final four and great chance at a title in 2017. Plus an OT loss from another one in 2019. We’ve seen that anything can happen in the tournament and we had a lot of shots go our way in a couple of those runs (Knight vs. OSU, Aaron Harrison 3s) that could have just as easily gone against us in his early years, and for us in the more recent years. Don’t think Cal being more or less hungry is the difference between hitting a game winner and missing one.

But things have definitely been different since 2019.

I take for granted that KY better be the better team because making adjustments and bench coaching more often then not aren’t going to win KY games.

Ebb and flow = longest period in program history without a 1 seed

Also to OP who says he wonders if we’ll change our tune if we win the title this year.

Well, obviously. Lol.
I’m ready for Cal to move on no matter what he does this year. I’m fine with a one more season swan song. Wish he would announce it early so everybody can give him presents.

People can’t understand ebb and flow
Were you one who said it was time for Tubby to go? Don’t know.

Tubby’s teams and recruiting were ebb and flow and unfortunately he lost the fan base during his last ebb. He had Draymond Green committed to join Meeks and PPat and was about to go back into a flow period but it was too late.

It’s too late for Cal as well. Hopefully he’s like a dying patient who rallies right before he succumbs.

What was OPs handle before this one? That’s the real question. At least we’ll know who we’re talking to.

He has the top class coming in next season. I’m sure no fan would want to lose that…
A lot of us don’t care anymore. I appreciate the symmetry of him coaching DJ’s son. He’s been laying the ground work for that group for years, to the extent of giving a spot on the team to Lance Ware.

So I’m fine with it, but I’m not excited about it. Hope he announces his retirement months in advance.

I think people forget how good the 2017 team was. Fox, Monk & Bam. Should have won the championship and I believe would have if not for the rooferee.
2020 had a shot too if the tournament hadn’t been canceled

We take Cal's off the court strengths for granted.

The next coach here likely won't have as robust of a network of connections into the most important parties involved in player acquisition or as successfully manage off court player mishaps and shenanigans.

We don’t forget. That was 6 years ago and we still lost. Counting 2020 is for losers, no offense. It’s like counting Helms titles but worse.

2019 wasn't bad either.
Neither was the season last year.

Strictly speaking from a season sense.

But anyways..........this just seems like an odd topic to post one way or the other lol. We are an hour away from playing our second round game vs K-State lol.
