Squib kick does nothing.
The person who stops it just lays on the ball and stops the clock/clock never starts.
Likely further up than the 25 yard line.

Squib kicks are used to prevent a long return - not waste time.

Problem with KC is that they don't need a long return (short field) in order to quickly score.
Agree. What might have been effective if we could have pulled it off was a little pooch kick landing around the 15 yard line. Not the easiest to execute though.

Of all the big plays in this game, the biggest was the toss of a coin.

College football has it right.

Eh disagree
At least NFL OT is like an actual game.
College starts in FG range.

The problem is football itself.
Hockey - scoring is infrequent enough that you can make it 1st to score.
Baseball/NBA - game isn't physical enough that you can just keep playing.

Maybe have 1 (or 2) full 15min quarters.
If still tied, then go to college style with no extra points?

Each team have a possession in overtime.
After that, who ever score wins.

All I know that this was probably the best playoff weekend in NFL History.
This week was great
Last week was the worst divisional round I ever saw
I posted before I felt like I watched three UConn games lol
Mahomes and Allen were a great match-up.
Bucs game was closer than it had to be with Brady missing Brown and Chris Godwin
NFL has injury issues

On the OT rules, is it really a problem that needs solving? This link is a few years old, so I’d be curious if the Stats held form. But, this would imply, at least from a results perspective, its as close as you can get to “even”.

OT winner: Teams that wins the toss: 50%, team that loses toss: 44%, tie 6%. Definitely an advantage to winning the toss, but it’s not insurmountable. Plus, in a tie, both teams had an opportunity with the ball. So, not sure where the complaints would be. How about, don’t suck at D during crunch time?

Your proposal is very interesting, especially for regular season play with the 10 minute overtime period. A team might determine that it is only getting one possession. Therefore, they might choose to kick off and get the ball last, so that they know what they need to do.

There are too many games. That, combined with reduced practice time, sometimes leads to more injuries.

The day that the winner of the toss actually has to think about whether to kick or receive, is the day that I will tell you that the system is fair.

Exactly. In the playoffs, I would prefer a 10 minute OT period, then if still tied, alternating 2-pt conversion attempts.

Fair by what measure? 50/46 is pretty darn close.
That is all OT games, where you have mixed in some not so good offenses. When you have two teams moving the ball like they were, the coin toss essentially decided the game (and Buffalo's inexplicable defense those last 13 seconds of regulation).

Got way to eliminate the OT coin toss.
Team that scored last gets the ball in OT first.
Same rules (TD wins the game/FG gives the other team a chance).

If you want to not lose like the Bills did - then don't give up the last score in regulation that tied the game.
The penalty for giving up that last score is that you potentially don't get the ball in OT.

Add-in steroids, HGH, PEDs etc
NFL has issues and you can tell just be looking
OL cant even block the chemo-freaks anymore
NFL is Tour de France in cleats

"This apparent rampant use of HGH over the past five years or more has created—as one player explained—a league of "superfreaks" who continue to run faster, jump higher and break records. Quinn said he believes this is behind the rash of injuries across the NFL this past season, and players interviewed by Bleacher Report had similar concerns: that the massive use of the drug, or others like it, will have long-term health ramifications. Their worries sound similar to the concerns expressed by some players in the 1980s and 1990s about concussions.

"The bodies of players are basically acting as chemistry sets," one veteran said. "What's going to happen to these guys five or 10 years from now?"

Certainly need to fix the overtime rule. It is a joke. Can you imagine having a coin flip in basketball? Oh, the Bulldogs scored a basket. Game over.

Bills were showing the Chiefs too much respect. They were in a defense to prevent a TD, when what they needed to prevent was the 20 yard chunk play.
was thinking same thing. It felt like they were too focused on not giving up a TD.
Yes I'm a Bills fan and yes I'm crushed. But I'm not putting it on the OT rules. I'm laying the blame squarely on that defensive scheme in the last 13 seconds. You drop back so deep and allow the receivers a free release off the ball and to run downfield for 10-15 yards unimpeded? You make it so easy for Mahomes that he doesn't have to spend any time searching for an open receiver while at the same time seconds tick of the clock. Hill is fast enough to run thru any defense for 20-30 yards in a few seconds. You need to have somebody contact him within 5 yards. Hell even if it's beyond 5 yards it's only a 5 yard penalty. And the time that would have run off the clock wouldn't be put back on it. And on the next play to Kelce same thing. You have nobody up on him. A CB is playing outside leverage on him, and the linebacker is in the middle. Making it easy for him to just find a big open area in between them for an easy pitch and catch with room to run after the catch. They had timeouts! Just terrible. An easy 45 yards on just 2 plays with no stress and no resistance really. Just like me I hope the head coach, DC and every player on defense won't sleep well tonight.
The defender who had his hand on hill's back/shoulder just prior to him catching the pass---was wondering why he didnt just try and yank him down. Take the flag but would have been better than the actual result.

Was talking about this on FB last night. With 13 seconds left, rush 3, have 5 guys tackle the 5 WRs, assuming they can catch them (or at least bump them hard) and have 3 DBs playing zone 15-20 yards back. The idea there is to prevent the 15-20 yard gain, not the TD, since KC wasn't going to be throwing Hail Mary's and if they did, 3 deep zone should be enough for that. As you said, holding/illegal contact calls are 5 yards - big deal, as the important thing is the clock still runs on those plays. I get not taking this approach with 30 seconds left and 3 TOs, as it makes breaking a big play easier, which then brings a TD into play, but I have a hard time imagining this being worse than what they did with 13 seconds left.

Playoff hockey is the best…you’re out there until someone scores. No matter how long it takes.
1,000,000,000% agreement. Basketball and hockey have, by far, the best OT, as they both continue playing the game the way it was intended.

I tend to agree, but for some reason, playoff OT games are different. The winner of the coin toss is 10-1 in the playoffs since the rule change.

Andy Reid doubt OT as it is.

"Even the winning coach, in this case Andy Reid, is questioning the NFL’s overtime setup.

One day after Reid’s Chiefs won the OT coin toss, then marched downfield for Travis Kelce’s 8-yard touchdown reception to end an epic divisional round game with Buffalo, Reid recognized how fortunate Kansas City was.

“I had a chance to talk with Sean afterward,” Reid said of Bills coach Sean McDermott, “and that I’m sure is something they’re going to look at again, too. And I wouldn’t be opposed to it — it’s a hard thing. It was great for us last night, but is it great for the game which is the most important thing we should all be looking out for? To make things equal, it probably needs to be able to hit both offenses, both defenses.”

Andy Reid questions NFL’s OT rules that helped Chiefs in thrilling win

NHL Regular Season Overtime is crap.
NHL Playoff Overtime is the best in sports.
I actually like regular season NHL OT for its purpose. There is a reason to have a difference in rules during the regular season and the playoffs. The NFL should take note of that.
