If I followed this story correctly, the issue was that the replay that viewers saw during the broadcast, and which was circulated on social media millions of times, could not be relied upon as accurate. The statement from the B1G was almost nonsensical, and the comment during halftime of the UW-WSU game by NBC was equally unhelpful.

I finally read an article last night that tried to explain what happened - which was that the B1G always knew there could be 'discrepancies' between their replay and what was shown on television. Maybe this was the first time that discrepancy actually impacted a result. But the B1G evidently did not want to come right out and say you can't trust the clock you see on television because it would make NBC look bad (and NBC pays a boatload of cash to the B1G). And NBC only wanted to go as far as saying they are not the official timekeepers. So two vague statements from the B1G and NBC just made the entire thing look suspect, even it there were legitimately :01 left on the clock.

Stop. Stop trying to defend the indefensible.
Rules dictate that if the game is televised the clock provided by television is the clock used for review. It's in the handbook.

ANN ARBOR, MI — A highly controversial ending at Michigan Stadium has unfortunately put a slight black eye on the NCAA's otherwise sterling reputation.

Though historically a bastion of high ethics and integrity, the NCAA has come under scrutiny after referees announced the existence of a secret game clock that never reaches zero while Michigan is losing.

"It's an unfortunate blemish for an organization that has always been regarded as carrying itself with the utmost virtue," said media pundit Dan Bradshaw. "To have a call like this, it raises uncomfortable questions such as 'Why do the refs have a secret clock different from the stadium clock?' and 'Why was there a million-dollar check from FanDuel given to the replay booth after the game?' You hate to see such a respectable organization like the NCAA have a black mark like this."

According to officials, the secret clock is part of a sophisticated new timing system designed to ensure that games do not end until the correct team has won.

"The clock everyone saw hit zero was merely the public-facing clock," explained Big Ten referee Chuck Weatherby. "The official clock is actually a wristwatch worn by a guy named Doug in a windowless room somewhere underneath Michigan Stadium. Doug said there was still a second left. That's really all there is to it."

NCAA representatives quickly moved to reassure fans that the controversy was an isolated incident and in no way called into question the organization's decades-long reputation for honesty, transparency, and putting student-athletes first.

At publishing time, officials had announced that the official NCAA investigation of the NCAA revealed no wrongdoing by the NCAA.

I see now that WMU is pushing back and not just accepting the prior narrative and are asking that the NCAA consider them the winner. That’s based on the replay crew apparently not following accepted protocol. That’s exactly what rules analyst Mike Pereira suggested over the weekend. He said the protocol is that if there is a discrepancy between the replay clock and TV clock, you are supposed to use the TV clock because that is the one everyone watching sees and doing so helps avoid any semblance of impropriety.

Nothing likely changes the result, but it’s a bad look.

I’m not defending anything- which is why I said the entire thing is suspect.

I would be beyond pissed if I was a WMU player, coach, fan etc. WTF. We can have technology expedited first down measurements in the NFL but we can’t get a game clock right in the NCAA.

Exactly. The game was over. That last play should never have happened. The mistake changed the score AFTER the game was over.
