Did Lincoln get it wrong?

He didn't want to persecute Confederates after the war...he wanted to bring the country together and get it moving as one in the right direction...should have he instead put them in jail or whatever wiped the south clean of them in some fashion?
when that is done, the war doesn't end until all are dead. That is like the blacks and sympathizers, they will never let it end. The encouragement to end in peace never comes. Fight until opponent is found and destroyed. We actually showed that we have the capacity to get along for a hundred years. For some reason some want to stir the pot again. Should we choose sides and go again until there is nothing standing on the other side? That sounds rather extreme, but peace has to be declared at some point.

No I didn't. It was in the picture for some reason. I said, "another gem of president.....I guess you could substitute uneducated-whites and republican into this quote and attribute the quote to Trump or Bannon."
No, only LBJ wanted a great society where people were beholdne to government for giving everything they need.

Do you honestly think statues teach future generations? Statues honor. Texts teach.
Statues dont just honor. They are also reminders. When you see a statue, you know if it is a honor or not. Civil war statues are a physical reminder of a time when America decided it was time to kill each other over our differences instead of work them out for the good of all. Now more than ever is the wrong time to forget that message.

The odd part of this is that so many have said to southerners for a long time that the war is over and it is time to move on. Those very same people who preach that the war is over are the ones picking the scabs by tearing down the statues from that war.

Nobody is trying to forget the message. The statues were put up during the Jim Crow era to remind one set of the population who was in charge and who had led the war to keep them forever in bondage -- that was the message. Germany hasn't forgotten the Nazi era, but you won't see statues of Hitler, Goering, or Goebbels in every little town.

The truth is that Lincoln didn't want to have to deal with the leaders of the rebellion -- he would rather they had escaped. John Wilkes Booth relieved him of the problem.

I heard on the radio that there's a big push to excuse those folks in Durham that yanked down the monument.

glwt. About the only thing liberal around here nowadays are the governor and the cities. Sheriff has jurisdiction, and that isn't going to go their way.

Blah blah blah. Keep picking the scab. Why is the left hell bent on dividing America?

Maybe it varies by user, but this is what appeared on my screen. I'm offended by your implication that I was being dishonest, but won't be needing a safe space. Have a good day, Popeer.

Glitchy is right -- I was responding to your statement that Trump and Bannon aren't racists, and not the LBJ meme. I'm familiar with that quote (which he may or may not have actually said), as well as his acknowledgement that passage of the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act would cost his party the South for generations to come.

I believe the Sheriff as little say after one is arrested. It is up the state's attorney or local prosecutor to move forward if charges are to stick.....and they should

I've heard it on tape at the LBJ Library in Austin. They had an authentic display of the taping system for which tricky Dick is famous. History used to be credible and preserved.
The best part of that field trip was a girl on the ride up shouting "look, that one cow is trying to ride the other one." The school bus erupted in laughter when we saw what she was talking about. Can't unremember that nor I want to, laughter is good.
