I'm surprised he wasn't charges with DUI to be honest. Unless someone else was driving and left him there, the logical conclusion is that he was driving drunk, got out of the car and passed out. That would be much more serious.

Ok so he was found passed in the road with his door open? On the side of the road....

True?

At least if you are going to bash Bullitt County and Derek Willis....learn to spell Bullitt County correctly.
Some of the nicest people I have ever met are from there and it makes you sound like a pious snob. Just curious which county in Ky you think so much more highly of than Bullitt???

Gotta love the spelling nazi...there's at least one in every crowd. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: I take it you're from Bullittt County. Actually, this could apply to any county in the state but because Derek is from Bullitt County, it's so Bullitt County. Lighten up a little Francis, me thinks your doing a little to much reading into comments! :sunglasses::cheers2:

True?

If you pull it up online, it was a residential street.

So I wonder if he was partying on that street, or if he pulled off the road and ended up there.

Hopefully, this all gets worked out and Willis learns a valuable lesson from it. But, it's a little concerning. A lot of posts have correctly pointed out that it's not unusual for a college student to drink too much, but this seems like it was way too much. It is extremely unhealthy to drink to the point that you would pass out on a street and not even know the name of the town you are in. I hope he gets past all of this, and puts it behind him.

I was responding to this info from a courier journal article. "The deputy reported Willis said he had "a lot" to drink and could not advise where he was other to say in "northern Kentucky" after being woken up. The citation reports Willis had extremely slurred speech, was unsteady on his feet and "was a danger to himself and others.""

It's lame that the deputy is making it out to be a big deal that Willis could only say "northern Kentucky" when asked where he was. I go to Cincinnati frequently, and I don't know the boundaries of Florence, Ft. Mitchell, Union, and Covington. All the cities up there run together. I consider everything north of the I-75 and I-71 merger to be one big suburb of Cincinnati. For Willis to have said northern Kentucky was accurate, and I wouldn't expect a more specific answer from someone not from the area. I'm not trying to excuse Willis's behavior, but the "northern Kentucky" emphasis by the deputy is silly.

EXACTLY.

Myself I don't think it is big deal. Lucky for him he was not driving.

With that said you guys know good and well had it been a UL player folks on this board would be all over it so you have to expect the same from some on a UL board. Both fan bases forget they all live in glass houses.

I maybe splitting hairs here, but it said the "drivers side door". Was it a four door car?

I've done much worst than this as I once woke up in a ICA isle. I didn't get woke up, but I was there long enough to nap and get up on my own and walk home. Then again, I wasn't a local celebrity.

We don't have as much police presence and people meddling/caring as much.

I remember this funny story about George Jones years ago where some members of his family hid his car keys so ole George just got on his lawn mower to drive to some little store nearby and was stopped by some cop and was arrested and charged with a DWI.

Good point.

It seemed like 1/4 of the kids I went to UK with claimed to be from Cincinnati when they actually lived in "Northern Kentucky."

I amend my previous statement. Even if he wasn't charged with DUI, it's pretty obvious he was behind the wheel while drunk off his ***. He got lucky that he wasn't asleep in the driver's side... hell for all we know the cop was a UK fan and wrote it up that way because he had to do something.

Suspension for as long as Cal wants, full out Jorts "run at 6 am" routine with a zero tolerance for lateness, and an ankle bracelet monitoring his BAC. Is it unfair to do that for a kid who's nearly 21? Probably. But if he wants to prove he can be mature and responsible, you either do it or you're off the team.

I was the DDD many a time in the summers while at UK; but I wasn't on the basketball team.
and was never so drunk as to pass out by the car...very poor planning/judgment on his part
And did you get prosecuted for being the fuddy duddy who never drank? Surely there must be a 'Not Drunk But Unpopular' charge they can file against you. [winking]

Boone County? What what he doing up there, I wonder? Took a trip to see the 'Florence Y'all' water tank? Those cops are the worst. Lucky they didn't beat the hell out him while he was on the ground.

Being 21 has no special meaning here. Had DW happen to kill someones relative on this board before he passed out, I'm sure it would all be just "kids having fun at college".

I don't care about him drinking (even though id suggest against it in his position) but the chance he was driving while drunk make it extremely serious.

Totally agreed. I just anticipated someone being like "once he's 21 he should be allowed to drink responsibly he's a college student they drink etc etc" but I think he's thrown out his chance to have a big dumb 21st like everyone else, and needs to show some responsibility to earn the privilege of being on this team.

Why in the hell does everyone talk trash about the cop here? I'm so sick of this crap. The cop did his job. I know if it were me I would have done the same. He probably called an ambulance crew to check him out and Derek refused medical treatment. What's the cop gonna do, leave him passed out in the street?

As far as the cop writing things to make his report sound good. You are an idiot. You have to write the offense to mirror as the statute is written. Otherwise you have no reason to arrest anyone and it will be thrown out.

Derek could have been arrested for DUI. And if he were anyone else other than a UK basketball player he prolly would have been.

So the ones of you blaming the cop should prolly let that one go. Yes it was a mistake. No it's not the end of the world. Yes cal will make him pay for it.

I think that covers every discussion in here.

Because the cool thing right now is hating on cops. It's also been made political by a certain group.

If most police weren't so ethical they'd have already gone on strike so the people could see exactly what anarchy looks like. Someone kicking in your door? Nope, no help. Figure it out.

Do you know what the triple D (DDD) stands for? If so, your response in stupid; if not, then your it is ignorant and it is usually best not to comment if you don't understand.

DDD= designated drunk driver...we would have the hometown boy be that guy; he would know the backroads and where the cops would not be...this was back in the 80's.
we were very young and very stupid...thank God, no one was ever hurt

This is nothing like shooting a unarmed man/woman. People aren't making it "cool" people have been pointing out "obvious" abuse of power by police, big difference. This wasn't a abuse of power, the cop did his job the way he was supposed to do it. Wllis is actually lucky he didn't tack on DUI which he could have easily done. Some fans kill me how they feel a different set of laws should be used for their favorite team/players. It's the same on every site. When a kid messes up there are some fans that will always say it's not a big deal but if it happens to a rival team/player then the kid should be put out of school and the school should get the death penalty

The important thing here is to make snap judgments with no room for nuance or additional information.

We're not the ones that will be ultimately sitting in judgement...this man will weigh the evidence and deal with it appropriately.

Just listened to Calipari on mike Lupica show. He said when he was hired he told president Todd he would not throw a kid under the bus at first sign of trouble. He said he would deal with each situation but he is not going to trash a kid for a mistake.

Some cops mess up and it's fine to point that out. Just make sure you also point out that cops also get gunned down by religious zealots, bigots, and loonies. In some groups killing a cop is a badge of honor.

An article with further details about the arrest and discussion about DUI

http://www.wdrb.com/story/32218732/...old-police-she-had-no-idea-how-they-got-there

“My first thought when I read about it, was ‘Why didn’t they charge him with DUI?'” said Louisville attorney Paul Gold, who is well-known for handling drunken driving cases. “We have someone sleeping on the road outside the car.”

Defends drunken drivers for a living.
Wants UK player to be charged with DUI.

Still, this doesn't look good. Both of them passed outside of the car with no recollection of how they got there? Being completely unbiased, you almost have to charge him with a DUI at this point.

Edit: Maybe not. I guess precedent generally states that if they can't prove WHO drove the vehicle, DUI's are not usually given.

I'd say it seems pretty obvious WiIlis was driving. I can't and hope, he's not dumb enough to change seats with the girl if she was in fact driving, in an effort to protect her. If anything, the other way around. But she was on the passenger side. But if the state normally stays away from handing out DUI's if they can't prove who drove, then the same should apply here, Kentucky player or not.

I have no idea who was driving, but it seems to me that they got lost which has probably happened to most of us at some time.

Btw - the UL board is saying its a big deal cause it's underage drinking being 9 days from 21. That makes it major.

Someone help me out. Wasn't therer a performance in Minardi hall that involved underage?

What UL board? The Rivals board posters seemed pretty supportive of him the last time I read it.
